DELIVERS AN ADDRESS THIS AFTERNOON Mow HWe Has Alded In Making Christianity Attractive to Those Who Drudge - What May e Churches Today. Rev. A. Holden Dyles of Hanley, Is visiting with his son, Mr. Winter in Omaha. He will this afterncon at 4 o'clock, address the men's meeting at the Young Men's Christian ation building, describing the Pleasant Sunday Afternoon movement of which he is the originator. Mr. Byles is one of the strong religious leaders of the time. He has been for many years one of the honored ministers of the independent churches of Engiand. During his minfstry at Hanley, one of the largest manufacturing cities, he became decply im- pressed with the fact that a large proportion of workingmen are outside of the churches While ho does not claim to be the originator of the Pleasant Sunday Afternoon movement, he Is its chief apostle, and was practicall its founder. He, more than any other man, has made it what it is. Mr. Dyles is about years of age, a genial and cultivated gentleman, without any of the traditional bearing of the English parson; a straight- forward, earnest, manly Christian man. He is accompanied by his wife, who is one of the remarkable women of England and a leader in the varlous forms of soclal work in which women are engaged in that coun- try. Mr, Byles is a brother of the editor of the Yorkshire Gazette, one of the most influential of English papers outside of Lon- don, and is related to many of the great non- conformist families. After thirty years of tireless labor he s now taking a much- needed rest and spending six months in this country. While in America on stormy Sundays or at the second service the churches are but par tally filled, in Hanley the church is always packed, no matter what the weather is, by an audienco of laboring men. This is the result of what is known as the “‘Pleasant Sunday Afternoon” movement. This movement is the outgrowth of an adult bible c held In Birmingham some forty-seven years ago by tho late Mr. Joseph Sturge. The P. 8. A. is a society, and not a promiscuous congregation It has enrolled members, with rules, a com- mittee of management, register of names, anl a_definito weekly payment to cover expenses. Non-members are always admitted to the meetings. The only qualification for mem- bership is that the applicant shall be 18 vears of age; character is not considered, and bad persons are always more welcome than good. In this movement the sexes are kept distinet. It has been found that the best wa to reach men is to have the meetings for men only. How successful they are may be learned from the fact that of the 1,680 mem- bers of the soclety of which Mr. Byles Is pre ident, not more than 300 before its organiza- tion were found in s of worship. The meetings are held in the churches and not in halls, thus proving that the men will go to the church if it is made attractive. The whole movement Is a church movement. The motto of the soclety is “Brief, Bright and Brotherly.”” The order of service is simple, consisting of hymns, a brief seripture lesson, a short address by the chairman, and a longer address—not over twenty minutes—by somo person specially invited. There is always a choir, some solo singing, and, where possible, a string band. The addresses are the features of the meetings. They are not sermons, but straight talks upon living themes. A few suggestions from Mr. Byles' pamphlet on the P. S. A. will give an idea of the spirit of the movement: Fi The whole service must be brief, and every part of it bright and brotherly. Second, Make the men feel at home di- rectly they enter the building. Third, There must be an entire absence of the official element. If the minister is present it must be only as one of the con- gregation, unless he has been elected presi- dent. Fourth, The whole organization in fact as in name, democratic. Fifth, There must be absolute freedom from all suspicion of any sectarian purpose. Sixth, There must be no suspicion mercenary motive, Seventh, There should be no resort to any sensational attractions to sccure attendance. Eighth, The prize system should be adopted and encouraged. Ninth, District visitors should be ap- pointed from the men themselves. gngland, Byles, assoc ass must be, of Rome as it Is Today. The first of the series of Lenten talks projected by Carroll council of the Young Men's Institute took place in the institute rooms Thursday evening. The subject was “Rome,” and the speaker Rev. Bernard Gal- vin of St. Philomena’s cathedral, Father Galvin was educated and lived in Rome four years, and is thoroughly con versant with its history, characteristics and everyday life. He sketched briefly its tre ures of art and antiquities, its wonderful ruins, and contrasted modern workmanship in buildings and engineering with the marvels of ancient design and construction. When Rome became the capital of United Italy the government undertook to transform the an- cient city. New streets were opened at right angles, crooked ones straightened, and miles of pavements projected. Old buildings were torn down and ruins cleared away and in their place hundreds of modern flats and RAILWAY TIME CARD TON & MO, RIVE Union’ Depot, 10t & Sason Denver Ixpress 1iills, Mont. & Puget .. Thousands upon thousands of young men, par ticularly those from the country, are ruined by army life. They are hdustrious, moral and temperate on entering It and graduate as dissipated loafers, The interesting entertainment closed with cigars and songs by Messrs, Moran and Swift, Vv Chrlatian Association. It Is a matter ot conslderable congratulas ° tion that the Young Men's Christian assos clation 1s able to maintain its membership during these times, when so many younsg men have left the city and are out of employment, The record up to the last day of February was 1,305, but 105 expirations occurring the first of the month dropped the membership to 1,200, The committees are active in thelr work to restore the loss, and the prob is that by the first of the month they W able to do so. The lecture last Monday evening by Mrs, Dr. Lankton was very enjoyable as well a® helpful. She proclaimed the “Gospel of Health,” its whys and wherefores, in a stmple, but cone vincing manner. She gave much sound ade vice on keeping well and bringing about the symmetrical development of all parts of one nature, physically, mentally and spiritually. The delightful music formed an attractive part of the evening. Miss Elizabeth MeCon= nell and Kitty Hobby sang, Miss Elizabeth Allen rendered a violin solo and Miss Ruth Phillippl a planoforte selection, Noontide services are being held on Wednesdays and Fridays of each week dur- ing Lent, Mother Caroline of the Mission of Our Merciful Savior having charge at the up= town rooms and Miss Cayford at the down- & town rest. All interested in the work of the association are urged to come, Prof. Chatclaine has consented to extend the course of lessons in French, much to the delight of his pupils, whose progress under lis instruction has been almost phenomenal, The association has been very fortunate in its educational work this year and the work in the French classes has been of unusual excellence.
