( hlcagn Expressman Shoots His Wife and Brother-in- CHICAGO, Feb. 23.—Emanuel Barker, an expressman 20 years old, shot and killed his wife Carrie, and brother-in-law Harry Barn- ard, and escaped arrest. The three are col- ored and live at 1810 State street, where the shooting took place. Jealousy was the cause of the tragedy. The attentions paid by other men to his wife were resented by Barker, and for some time there had been a quarrel between them, Shortly after 1 o'clock Barker returned to his residence in the second story of the bullding. He ana Barnard entered into a discussion of the actions of his wife, Wwho was in another room. Barnard took the woman's part. This enraged Barker, and arawing a revolver he fired a shot at his brother-in-law. The bullet struck Barnard in the left eye and entered the brain. He fell to the floor unconscious. Hearng the shots, Mrs, Barker came running into the room. Her screams as she caught sight of the unconscious form still further angered Barker, and he fired four ghots at her, two of which took effect In her left breast, caus- ing instant death. Others in the building wero aroused by the shots, and the police at the Twenty-second street station were notl- fied, Officers were soon on the spot, but Barker had escaped. A physician was sent for, but Barnard died before he urrived. Mrs. Darker was 22 years old, Barnard was 25 years, He was employed as a bar tender in a State etreet saloon, INDIAN TRIBE DIVIDED, Two Factions Warring for Supremacy and Occupatio the Reservation, INDO, Cal., Feb, 23.—There is every pross pect of war betwen the factions of the tribe of Coahuila Indians as to which should ocs cupy the reservation near Idaho. Cabazon, tho hereditary chief, is 80 years old, and when the reservation was managed by Agent Rust, Cabazon refused to correct —alleged abusés in the relations between the Indians and the agent. Accordingly Josquin Torres revolted, and with a number of followers es tablished a separate camp across the valley, There have been continued quarrels between adherents of the rival chiefs, and in settling recent dispuies the present Indian agent, Francls Coestudillo, sentenced Anton Razan, one of Cabazon's lieutenants to five days work for Torres, the new chief. Cabazon's new followers ure preparing to resist efforts to urrest Razan. They are armed with rifles and amniunition and have a large supply of whisky.
