PROMISES FOR THE COM'NG WEEK Salvinl Emphasizes His Claim to the Public Recognition but 1His “Student of Sala- manca’ Proves a Complete Fallure —Among the Theaters, Beyond tho Salvini theatrically has been without interest. ander Salvini, however, gave a magnificent performance of “Don Caesar De Bazan' and a virile portraiture of Dumas' ““Three Guards men.” In the “Student of Salamanca,” how ever, he failed to add a single tittle to his growing reputation, for Salvini has the mak Ing of a great big actor when age tones down the exuberance of youth and Eoftens his zeal for over-accentuate, Talking to one of his leading women several years ago, she told the writer that it required all her strength to fit Salvini's climaxes, and that her vi had almost gone In consequence of the over- straining necessary, which Salvinl insisted upon from his leading lady. Herein then is found the chief fault of Salvini's work, its overbolsterousness and its departure from the accepted tenets of the stage. But Salvini has youth and enthusiasm and when these are somewhat subordinated he will be much more acceptable to theatergoers than he now is, although his clientele is constantly grow- ing. engagement the week Alex- YVETT! She Gives a Description of Two of IHer songs. Yvette Guilbert, the celebrated French singer of naughty songs, was interviewed by the Pall Mall Budget in London. . “I have such songs if they will only un- derstand them.” “What are they? “‘La Soulade. It has been of the grand success In Paris. All the literateurs in Parls have come to hear it. But it fs hard work in England, that song, and 1 am afraid. In Paris, no; everyone un- derstand. But I hope it will be here, for it im my greatest. It is quite human. It has such—it has the—intensite.” “What is it about?’ “‘La Soulade; that is, the woman who always—what do you say—drunks. It i the pity of her, the miserable, that I ex- press. When she go out the people follow her and point and shout her. Once a little boy follow her and take a stone and throw her. And in the song I make the noise like the foule, the crowd that follow her. It is a great dramatic effect. Verdi has speak much of that song. Such success as every man of literature in Paris have come to see me—Meilhac, Sardou, Francols, Coppee, Catulle Mendez, and they say 1 have never been in the good way of my talent more. But I am not only one siyle. In Paris 1 sing eight, nine songs, and it gives mo to show eight, nine styles; so they say: “Yvette Guilbert, she is not one artiste, but eight artiste in one." “And La Pierreuse, that at new song, is it not?” “‘La Plerrcuse.’ Verdi sa chanson cafe concert, but tragedy. Ah, I have seen soldiers cry over that song.” is another Br vs It is not of of the high A DOG MELODRAMA, A Performance of Educated Caplaes In New York. At Koster and Bial's, in New York, there is a performance of which the Commercial Advertiser gives this description: The most striking number was furnished by Tschernoff's educated dogs. It is worth going many a mile to see their acts. Of course, they do all the usual tricks, but it is the canine play that caught the house. At one corner is a little saloon. A black poodle dressed as a policeman Is leaning against tbe wall—the true policeman indif- ference—when a jet of flame and smok shoots from an upper window. The copper is started. He hesitates for a moment and then starts off on a dead run for the fire alarm. A moment later the cngine rattles up, drawn and driven by dogs, of course, dressed like firemen, They drag out the hose and beat at the doors. The hook and ladder arrives. The ladder Is run up to a second story window and the red-helmeted firemen mount one after another. One of them, a Pomeranian, staggers down the lad- der with a basket of valuables. A poodle fireman follows, holding a baby. The flames and smoke by this time have overwhelmed the little house, and the last fireman is suffo- cated and falls dead at the foot of the lad- der. By the way, there is a young woman, full size, who is rescued from the building. She should be cut out; she can't act as well as the dogs, and, in addition, ruins the naivete of the scene. The dead fireman is lifted anions and laid on a table. his helmet beside him. Then, with a cry of gricf, the drollest little figure in widow's weeds, with a long blond wig, hold- ing a handkerchicf to her eyes, pusies on and kneels beside the table, kissing the dead fireman beside the table, They try to lead her away, but she rushes back and knecls, sobbing, by tho dead hero. And when the ambulance comes and bears him away she follows it, weeping, her handk chief to her ey All this is funny enough to split a dys- peptic’'s sides, but when two little puppies in pinafores toddle on and wail in the widow's skirts the house goes mad with laughter, It fg the best bit of comedy in town today. The play has proved a record breaker in more ways than one. The fun i seid to be incessant and from the rise of the curtain upon the opening scene dull carc and business troubles and worrie: vanish into air, and laughter holds full sway. The quaint humor of that prince of comedians and folly good fellows, Paul Dresser, s infectious, and his funny saying and actions will linger in the memery when others have come and gone. Mr. Dresser is deservedly a favorite with the amusement public, a conscientious and earnest devote of his art. He will appear as a German saloon keeper and his size makes him the ideal character, for e it known, Mr. Dresscr weighs nearly 400 pounds, and as all German saloon keepers are supposed to be fleshy, especlally when impersonated on the stage, he has his size in hig favor and he will not require to make up the part much. The green goods swindle has lonk been one of the principal modes of making a living employed by an unscrupulous class of people. It has been exposed time and again by the public press, but, seemingly, the supply of Kuaves aud fools were and are inexhaustible. This play will expose the trick in a farcical way and should make the paths of these rogues doubly difficult in the future. The play itself abounds in funny situations and strong comedy characters, and portrays a type of people found in the lower 400 of every large city, Morrison's is for an ngagement at the % with Sunday matinee, February The company 15 sald to be of the same Ligh grade of ex | country. aid M cellence, characteristic of this production in its former appearance in this city, and headed by the well known actress, -Miss Rosabel Mortison. “Every time 1 see Murphy I think better of the Irish,” a young Engiish lady said to her escort in Detroit last Monday night while some of the laughter caused by ‘The Kerry Gow' still remained to brighten her face. And she was not the only one unacquainted with the Irish character wha might have uttered a like sentiment. That prejudice against the Irlsh has been height- ened by the presentation on the stage of the most ridiculous and brutal pictures of Irish life. Its almost total obliteration has been effected in no small measure, through the same medium that was used in strength- ening it—the stage. It needed only that Irish men and women should be represented before the public faithfully that they should be appreciated, and the need was met by such men as Joseph Murphy, and by none more than him. ~ He deserves from hix countrymen for his work everlasting praise, and the Irish can hardly perform a more religious act than praying that his voice may long be preserved him. Mr. Murphy will close his present engagement at Boyd's theator this (Sunday) evening in ‘The Kerry Tow.' latest achievement of Mrs, Jen- nie Kimball, “Hendrick Hudson, or the Dis- covery of Columbus,” will be seen at Boyd's theater the first three nights of this week, with the same special cast that presented this operatic extravaganza for six consecutive months at Chicago during the World's fair, 100 nights in New York, and elght weeks in Boston. Al of the beautiful scenery, cos- tuming creations, electrical and mechanfcal effects will be exhibited. The costumes have been most lavishly supplied, the materials are of the finest and richest qualities, and the colors such as blend so harmonfously and plcturesquely that in the successive group- ings the most critical eye cannot detect. & jarring shade. The scenery Is rendered striking by a series of ingenious transforma- tlons, “Every scene s a Kaleidoscope of rare beauty, and is constantly changing, The production contains everything which tends to an enjoyable evenlng and pleases the enses, The company numbers sixty people, headed by the charming comedienne, prima donna, danseuse, Corinne, She fs an ac- complished musician, and has made the mandolin a study. It has taken years of practice under teachers both home and for- elgn to attain to her present position. She is bubbling over with mirth, and inspires the play with the spirit of her own per- sonality, It |s unnecessary to judge her by others.” She is assisted in the nerry making by a clever coterie of comedians seldom seen in the company, viz.: Williard Simms, Charles Fostpelle, James ~ Sturgess, Harry Dietz, Frank Hayden, Charles Kirke and Mark Wooley. The electrical march of the phantom cuirassiers, infante prodigy (New York's latest sensation), the Cairo quadrille, the Persian dancing girls, the Midway Plais~ ance are a few of the speoial features. Williams of New York, the celebrated akespearean reader, is one of the few artists in his particular role who has been able to make a success of his work. He devotes his whole time to the giving of Shakespearean plays, and they are put before his audiences in such a manner as to win_ thelr admiration and approbation, not only by his thoroughly novel business methods, but by his superior artistic work upon the platform. Mr. Wililams gives the plays entirely from memory, and with his finely modulated voice and excellent facial expression, with no cos- tumes or accessories, successfully personates the many characters represented in cach of the plays. He gives a scholarly and cone gcientious reading of the text, with no at- tempt at acting the parts, and as a gentle: man remarked, it is not only “as good a a play” enacted by actors on the stage, but it is better. a finer intellectual exercise, and one which will grow into favor.
