Speculation on 'Chuuge W Though Prices Were Irregular. NEW YORK, Nov. 19.—Speculation the Stock exchange today was fairly active, but the market was unsettled and the movement of prices very irregular. Lon- don was a seller of the international stocks, chiefly St. Paul, while Boston sold Burling- ton and Chicago sold Northwestern. The | doubts expressed as to the declaration of the regular dividend on Burlington & Quincy had an unfavorable effect on the entire market, and reports of decreased earnings of Northwestern were another de- pressing Influence. The market was weak and lower at the opening and there were fractional declines in the early dealings. About 10:30 New Jersey Central led a pretty | general rally, with a gain of 13 per cent, e {mprovement was not maintained, and | before 11 o'clock had been reached a large measure of the advance was lost in the active list, while some of the specialities fell off materially, Lake Erie & Western airly Active on | a_fraction. | Dl& ¢ cific 1% per cent and Tobacco and Con- solidated Gas ench 1 per cent. Delaware & Hudson receded 1% per cent. The mar- ket continued heayy until after 11 o'clock, when a rally ranging up to 1 per cent was led by Sugar. A quick reaction followed, in which Chicago Gas declined 1% per cent, Lake Shore 1 per cent and the general list In the afternoon a heavy tone characterized the dealings, but it was only the specialties which made any losses, and for the half hour preceding 2:15 the move- mext of was light. After delivery hour the as a reaction, led by Western Union_and the grangers and coal, but tne temper of the speculation undérwent a change before 2 o'clock, and during the last half hour prices moved up steadily and the | market closed steady., The early losses were not entirely made up In the closing rally, and most of the list showed a ae- cline; compared with the final sales of Sat- urday, notably Pullman, 1% per cent; Ca- nadian Pacific, per’ cent; St Paul & Omaha and Tdbacco, 1 per cent; Lead pre- ferred, % per c Of the grangers Rock Island 18 down 1 per cent, Burlington stands unchanged and Northwestern up 1 per cent. Sugar opened 1§ per cent higher, declined & per cent and advanced 215 pel cent, closing within % per cent ot the highest 'and 1% per cent above Satur- dny's closing. The bond market was weax throughout the day on fairly active trad- ing, sales aggregating $1,301,000. In the late dealings some lssues made advances, in- cluding Kansas Texas seconds = ana Atchlson seconds, selling up % and & per cent, respectively. Forelgn stocks were weaker, with a less bouyant tone in the Paris bourse, Hrazillans were excep- tionally flrm on ‘reports of a fresh loan. The ~Ivening Post's London cablegram Except for mining shares, the mar- kets ‘were dull today. Americang were flat, cloging near the worst. St. Paul and Cu: nadia ic were especially weak on traffic returns. The week opens out with a good, liberal run, 206 cars in all, fewer cattle, but more hogs and sheep than arrived on last Mon- day. There was not a very lively cattle trade today, although prices averaged up prett much the same as on Saturday. The sup- ply was rather liberal and the good to cholce beef grades sold at strong Satur- day's prices. Some 1,260-1b. rangers brought and a bunch of cholce 1,476-1b. native | beeves brought $.55. On the medium and common grades trade was slow. Prices were hardly quotably lower than last week, but sellers generally were glad to get Sat- | urday’s prices. It was rather a dull mar- Ket, but the close found practically every- thing sold. The market for cow stuff was steady to week. There were a dime lower thon last fully sixty straight loads on sale, and lots of odds and ends. The decline was mostly on the medium and common grades. At the regular mecting of the Ministerial unfon at the Kountze Memorial Lutheran chureh yesterday the usual program was varied by an address by Chancellor Canfield of the Nebraska State university on “‘Higher gducation.” The address was in the nature o taken place in educational theories during the past quarter of a century and was en- livened by frequent humorous allusions which were decidedly amusing to the audience. | The speaker sald that in the days when be was in college a boy usually went there he was sent and not from any desire to acquire knowl- | edge. The faculty proceeded on the theory that the college was created to pack up a few parcels of FXnowlcdge and nsert them in the pockets and under the hat of the student without his knowledge or consent. This w apparent in the manner In which the classes were conducted. A number of slips of paper were prepared, each bearing the name of a student. As a slip was drawn the particular student whose name it bore was invited to stand up and recite, and such a thing as a discussion or explanation by the professor was unheard of. If a student had asked a | question of the professor he would have been at once sent to Coventry for trylng to curry | | favor with the faculty.
