COMMERCIAL AND FINANCIAL Board of Trade Markets Wore Very Dull Yesterday, L WHEAT WAS QUIET AND WEAK EARLY Corn Opened Easier in Sympathy with the Weakness of Wheat—-Other Cereals Sell iIn Consonance with the tocks and Bouds. 10.~The Board of Trade markets were very dull today. The uncer- tainty regarding the government report pre- vented heavy trading, and was responsible for moderate weakness. December wheat closed e lower, May e lower; May oats unchanged. Provisions finished with moderate gains, Wheat was quiet and weak at the cpen- ing, then had o few minutes of moderate actiyity, while it tumbled down a further step or two, after which It recovered a trifle and became funerally dull. The traders evinced no disposition to make many sales or purchases, in view of the uncertainty of the government report. The usual news was not of a character to seric urb either the bulls or the bears. the forenoon December kept within range of 531 and B, and May at premium. The market recovered its tone toward the close, December selling up B3%e, and May, which had its premium re- duced to e at the same time, sold at & closing prices were: December, 53t Moderate buying caused the cle ness, Corn opened easier in sympathy with the weakness of wheat at that time. May was offered at 50%c, against 50'gc at the close yesterday, The number of cars inspected nce yesterday morning was reported at seventy-three cars, compared with an estimate of 100, In the other lines shipments for four hours were only 124800 bu, compared with Bu; on the corresponding time last year. It did not take sellers long to crowd the price of May down to ic, after which there was enough recovery, at which the market stuck for w long time. Not for several months has trading been as light as today. A little buying firmed up the market at the close, and May finished at wie. The activity i oats continued, and a gocd day's business was transacted. The govern- ing power still in corn. Buying orders were principally from the county, althou considerable stuff was taken by parties here Bellers were quite numerous. May started a shade easfer, at from 33t sold up to B3%e and back to 331c, closing at 334, Provisions closed dull, but firm. The ghorts were inclined to cover in a careful way, and the offerings were so light that a very little buying was needed to advance prices, Hog receipts were 15,000, and their rice was quoted from Ge to l0c higher. Pork, at the close compared with yester: day’s last quotation, was 10c higher; lard e higher, and ribs 5c up. Frefghts ' were slow and steady for corn and 1%c for oats to Buffalo. W YORK, Oct. 10.—The trading in the Stock exchange today was the lightest in volume for many weeks past, and the spec- ulation was of but little interest. Except in Sugar, St. Paul and Chicago Gas, the sales did mot exceed 4,500 shares in any single stock, and but one reached that figure. The arbitrage business was small, owing to the fact of it being a Jewish holiday, which kept many of the leading operators out of he market both here and in London, At the opening the market was heavy and a small 0 lower, but there was a quick re- after which the dealings became ir- and duliness was the prevailing characteristic of the situation up to mid- In the early afternoon a selling move- it of small force set in, under the influ- gnoe of which prices again declined _About 1 o'clock a rally took place, prices’ being well maintained until shortly before the close, when another reaction took place, the market closing weak and generally at a de- cline from the closing figures of yesterday Sugar led in the transactions and was in demand to cover short contracts, the bears having taken alarm at the cable advices re- porting the German sugar trade to have been ruined by the protection clauses of the new tariff bill. These purchases sent the stock up 21 per cent, to 84% but in the later dealings there were ‘fairly free offerings of the shares, causing a reaction to S2%e, which left only % per cent of the gain, The preferred stock scored an advance of per cent. St. Paul was the most active of the railway list and under sales by London and the traders induced by the heavy de- crease In earnings for the first week in October receded 9 per cent, closing at that low point, The other grangers n were not largely dealt In and moved in narrow range, Burlington standing unchanged on the day, and Rock Island and Northwestern losing % per cent and 14 per cent respectively. After an open- ing decline of 3 per cent in Chicago Gas, the itly formed bull pool in the shares set to work to advance the stock, and sent It up 1% per cent, to Tl the movement culminating about’ delivery hour. Lack of supporting orders and some realizing sales resulted in a loss of 14 per cent at the close the efforts of the clique being rewarded with a net gain of % per cent. Western Union was not prominent in the transac- tions until 2 o'clock, when upon the publica- tien of the annuai report which was gen- erally regarded as unfavorable, a drive was made on the stock, Which caiised u depre- clation i its value of Jer sent from the best price of the day. WEDNESDAY, Oct. 10, Compared with receipts for the first half of last week, supplies for the past three days show a falling off of some 700 cattle, while hogs have increased about 2,500, and sheep nearly 14,00 head. The cattle market was well enough sup- plled as far as quantity was concerned, but there were hardly enough desirable fat steers on sale to test the real tone of the trade. All classes of buyers were out after supplics, local dressed beef men in partic- ular, and as there were no good to cholce beeves here sellers had no trouble in work- ing off the common stock at good, strong prices. A few odds and ends of gr: tives sold at from $2. to $3.50, and westerns sold largely at from $2.75 to $.25. Bastern markets were all reported stronger, and the right kind of cattle would have sold readily at higher prices. There was a strong, active cow market today, with prices firm to 5e and 10¢ higher than Tues. ryboly wanted cows, and the sixty or seventy loads on sale were not long In changing hands. Veal calves sold rather firmer figures, and the same W true of bulls, stags and rough stock ge erally. A big business was done In stockers and feeders, but as the erings were largely of low grade stock prices were generally pretty low, although not a particle lower than recently. Good, smooth, well bred and flesh stock sold stronger. Good_ to cholce feeders are quotable at from $2.70 to $2.15; fair to good at from $2.40 to 70, and com- mon grades from $2.2 down.
