Twenty-fourth street is considerably higher north of the levee than the proposed line of Twentieth street, and the latter is also a block or more shorter, and the aldermen felt that the company would be getting con- siderable advantage of the city, provided an even exchange was made, The general senti- ment seemed to indicate a favorable report, After this part of the work was finished the council started to look up the road problem. The first question to settle was whether to return to town and take the usual road or go on along the river bank. The mayor put the question and a majority voted to follow the river. Two hours’ drive put several miles between the party and their dinners, and located them on a blind road begirt with tall willows and big sand dunes. A lone fisherwoman, who had caught a wagon load of drift wood, was met in the willows and interrogated anxiously. She didn’t know sure, but thought the road led somewhere, but felt certain it the mayor and his party went through a dozen barb wire fences and then turned this way and that way, directions which she indicated with vigorous motions of a fat arm in the air, they might find the old lime kiln road and &et back to town for supper. Half a mile further a shanty was found in the brush, with a crop of vigorous children and a big liver-colored dog in the foreground. The mayor appointed Etnyre as a committee of one to get information, and also to kill the dog if necessary. The children were dumb and the woman of the house had never heard of Council Blufts or the English language, but there was no trouble in understandiog the dog. Etnyre stepped over a five-foot barbed wire fence with case when he came back to make his rcport, while the dog stopped at the fence to see what was hidden in the large piece of wearing apparel that Etnyre had given him as a compromise. An hour later the hopes of the party were materially raised by the sound of a railroad Wwhistle, and the expedition boldly headed through the willows and sand in the direction the sound came from. By all walking and occasionally lifting the wagon and horses over ditches the road was found, and an hour later the party got on top of a hill, Wwhere the way home lay plainly before the eye. The dinner hour had long passed when the patrol wagon pulled up in front of the city building. Now We liave Got It. The trial of the United States Mcdicine company against Fremont West took place In Fox's justice court yesterday. West obtained about §16 worth of medicine frum quality of gas can be secured at a less price than is now paid? It will, therefore, be of interest as well as profit to examine the ad- ministration of this matter by the cities that have tried it. Wheeling, W. Va., city of some 35,000—not far from the of this. It is located at the base of a moun- tain, and the rocky foundation makes the lay- ing of mains very costly in comparison with the execution of such work here In 1870 the price of gas there was $3.50, and of poor quality. Needless to say, it was furnished by a private corporation. Disgusted with the service, the city voted $100,000 bonds for the purchase of the works. The regulations were inefficient and in 1879 the superintendent and secretary embezzled a [U30U0D 0 §Y00q 91} PAUING DU JUNOWE dFan| thelr fraud. Despite this great loss and the poor management that controlled up to 1879, the price was reduced from $3.50 to $2.80, then to $2, then to $1.80, again to $1.60, still further to $1.25, then to $1, then to 75 eents, and since 1 there has been a still further reduction in the price. The gas works have been Improved, the mains | and the service extended, until their value | upon the market exceeds half a million dol- lars. At the prices furnished the gas has not only pald the interest upon the invest- ment, but has paid for the works themselves, and besides has of late years been a source of reverue to the amount of thousands of dollars per annum to the city treasury, It is perfectiy clear that municipal management of gas in Wheeling, though by no means an ideal one, has been far superior to that city's experience with private management.
