THE OMAHA DAILY BEE! FRIDAY, OCTOBER 5, 1804, (IAL AND FINANCIAL @rain Markets Opened Firm on Enropean War News, BUYING SHORTS WERE NUMEROUS ENOUGH That Element Acted on the Information from England and France on the Sub- Jeet of Grave Complications— Stocks and Bonds. CHICAGO, Oct. 4.—Despite the apparent collapse of the European war scare, the grain markets were firm today, closing with Wheat 1c higher, corn 2¢ higher for Oc- tober and 1%c higher for May. Oats show & gain of %c. Provisions marred the gen- eral harmony by acting weak and closing fower. The northwestern receipts at eoun- try points were reported to have fallen oft About 25 per cent; spring wheat was In good demand for shipment east and a fear that movement was about to give further evi- ence of the Ilfberal feeling of the article all contributed to the day's strength. Wheat epened firm on what the shorts saw In the morning papers on war. While that class of buying received a little stimulus from the cause referred to, buying for the Jong account did not seem Inspired by it to any extent. English consols recovered some of yesterday's decline, and private cables reported an abatement in England of the war scare, Liverpool was, how- ever, reported firm at the opening for wheat, and Paris and Berlin were likewise quoted each a trifle higher. The bulls observed that the receipts at Minneapolis and Duluth were 920 cars, and that spoiled their ap- petite for the time being. The buying shorts were numerous enough, however, to keep the price Yc above yesterday's clos- fng figures. December wheat opened with buyers at 53%4c, kept within the range of that and 1t however gradually weakened there were sellers for a matter of ten minutes or so at 53%e. Just then it began to be whispered about that 300,000 bu. of No. 2 spring wheat had been sold here for shipment, and that cause & lively scramblo among the shorts for the offetings, which dried up suddenly when wanted, and the shorts bid December up to 53%c. The primary market receipts gave further evidence of the approach of com- rative scarcity. They amounted to only 50,000 bu. Export clearances from the At- lantic ports were light, amounting only to 294,000 bu, in wheat and flour together. Second cables reported Berlin lower, but rices retaining the early slight advance, and Averpool 1%4d higher sinee yesterday for ted winter. What was taken for confirma- ion of the sale of the 300,000 bu. of pring wheat gave fhe market another hoist, De- eemben touching on this spurt from 63%c to B3%c. The confirmation referred to was the naming of the reputed purchasers, Ed- gerton & Winans, Armour & Co.'s name ‘Was mentioned as the reported sellers of the wheat, This stimulated buying, and another rise to 5440 took place. The mar- ket ruled strong to the end, December touched Gd%c, and closed at 5ie. Reports of much smaller receipts at country points in the northwest today was an element in the bulliskness. Recelpts of corn were light, numbering only 51 cars, and only $0 are estimated for tomorrow. The moderate receipts, moderate estimated and active demand for the near deliverics of corn conspired to make a strong market for it. October corn, which closed yesterday at 48%c, rose to 50140, and olosed “at the latter price. May opened frregularly at from 50%c to 50%c, and after fluctuating during the greater part of the forenoon between 50%c and 49%c, it be- came very strong and sold up to from Gle to Gllc, and closed at 50%c. Country offerings were reported to be light and the seaboard users of corn were said to be show- ing more desire to buy. Business i a specilative way was fairly active. In oats there was a large amount of stuft that changed hands and quite a big ad- vance in prices. The firmness in corn, to- gether with a _generally good disposition 1o buy, were both influential in causing oat values to advance. Sellers were quite numerous, but the buyers, principally shorts, were considerably In the majority. Trading Was mostly all scattered. Carrington-Han- nah, however, bought freely. May started 840 higher than it closed yesterday, at 33%c, #0ld down to 33%0 and up to S44e, closing at from 34ie to 34l A weak hog market and a strong op- poaition to an advance in prices by the packing Interests caused weakness in provi- slons. ~ Business was rather light and of- ferings not pressed in large amounts. Pork broke 30c, lard 22%c and ribs 15c. Later the strength In grain helped to some im- provement, and the losses at the close mounted to 7l4¢ only, In pork and ribs, and 0c In lard. * Hog receipts were 27,000 Bead. The fmprovement in the market was due in some measure to the fact that the Anglo-Franco war scare was proven to be baseless and the more favorable railroad reports for Septem- ber, but the main factor was a demonstration of bull pools against the short interest. Chi- cago Gas was the leader of the speculation and was taken in hand early by an outside clique, which proceeded to squeeze the shorts in the stock, the loaning rates having been put up to 1-32 premium. Accompanying this movement was a report that an agreement had been entered into by the Chicago Gas and Municipal Gas companies for a division of territory. Under the covering which fol- lowed, assisted by purchases for the long ac- count induced by the scareity of the stock, the price moved up sharply to 72%, a gain of % per cent on the close yesterday. At the higher fgures the bears made a drive on the stock, which caused a reaction of 1 per cent to Ti% before noon. After midday the buying was resumed and became very heavy late in the afternoon, sending the stock up to 73%, the last being the highest price of the day and 3% per cent above last night's closing. Sugar was forced to take second place in the dealings. An early advance of % per cent was followed by a decline of % per cent, the trading at this time being very light. It was not until later in the morning the shares came into good buying demand, but strength of the market generally led to a covering movement in Sugar, which resulted in advancing the shares 214 per cent to 85%, with only final reaction of % per cent Advauces were established In the other in- dustrials of 1% per cent in Tobacco, 1% per cent in Lead, 1% per cent in Starch second preferred, General Electric % per cent, and Distilling % per cent. The latter stock sold up 1% per cent during the morning on sales induced by President Greenhut's statement that the rebate system had been abolished and that all rebate vouchers outstanding will be pald on maturity. During the afternoon the stock received but little support and sagged off 13 per cent. In the railway list the grangers were most active and the most notable event of tne trading therein was a bear attack on Rock Island, causing a break of 1% per cent from the opening price, which was 3 per cent above yesterday's closing; o siock we found 1o be waa ing suppo &t the time, some stop loas n:-l Charac- uncovered. Burlington, which opened % per cent higher, receded % per cent in sympathy, and St. Paul, which made an early advance of 5 per cent, also fell off % per cent. As there was no unfavorable news In these stocks the recovery was rapid. St. Paul re- gained all but % per cent of the loss and Rock Taland ug % per cent, while Bur- lington T m‘!‘,’.f all |h11 decline and made an advance of % per cent. There was a very strong buying movement during the last hour and the market closed strong, and at, or near, the best figures of the day. The advances above a fraction are: New Jersey Central and Ohlo Southern, 1 per cent; New England, 1% per cent, and St Paul, Minneapolis & Mahitoba, 3% per cent Alton & Terre Haute declined 1 per cent and a very few other shares a small frac- tion. The bond market was steady all day, and notably in the afterncon, when it moved in harmony with the share specula- tion. The trading was active, the sales aggregating $1,432,500. The Chesapeake & Ohio 4s, Burlington & Quincy Nebraska ex- tensfon 45, Reading and Atchison issues were most prominent In the dealings. The more fmportant changes are: Advances Richmond & Danville equipment 5s, 4 per cent; Loulsville & Nashville general 6s, 414 per cent; Beech Creek 4s, 27 per cent; Toledo, Ann Arbor & Grand Trunk 1s, Peoria Decatur & Evansville 1s and Mahoning and Coal Gs, 2 per cent; Chicago & North- ern Pacific 1s, trust receipts, East Tennes- see equipment 5s, trust receipts, and Read- ing 1s, preferred, 1% per cent; Reading 2d, 1 per cent; Minneapolis & Louis equipment 6g, 11§ per cent; & Omaha consols, Louisville & New consols and Chesapeake & Ohio 4%s, cent. Consols recovered most of the fall, and also other securities, including Americans. It is believed the po- sition of stocks is materially strengthened by yesterday's sharp shake out of weak bulls, Americans closed under the best. The large decrease in the Bank of England’s re- servo in today's statement was mainly con- nected with Internal requirements of cash at end of the quarter. Coin and bullion were down £1,266,000, of which £427,000 were ex- ported, £200,000 to Roumania, 120,000 to Egypt and £166,000 bars sold, while £5 came in from Australla and £11,000 from Portugal. There are rumors of a large gold loan for Austria for currency purposes. This might possibly take gold from the United States, but no confirmation of the rumor is yet received. The Evening Post says: In the second hour a curious attack was made upon the mar- ket, attributed, and no doubt rightly, to the strong and_most expert combination of local bear speculators. This movement centered in Rock Island, which was suddenly broken down 1 point. The other railway stocks did not so much follow the action of Rock Island as to come to a temporary halt themselves. Meantime, however, covering movements in the Industrial stocks continued, The following were the closing quotations on the leading stocks of the New York ex- change today: Atchison ........
