MMERCIAL AND FINANCIA Oorn Hesitted at the Btart, but Advanced Later and Wound Up Strong, WHEAT OPENED WITH POOR PROSPECTS [N Almost Everything in Oats W Bearish— The Session Was Active at Times nd Much Buosiness Was Done. CHICAGO, Sept. 4.—Corn hesitated at the start today, but, buoyed by erop damage reports, advanced later and wound up strong, dragging the other markets up with It. May corn closed 1c higher, December wheat ¥c higher and September oats %c higher. Pro- visions, finished strong at liberal advances all around. The price of wheat during the first half hour of the session gave evidence of little change in the ideas of the speculators re- garding its value, Five minutes after the opening the early orders from country cus- tomers appeared to be exhausted and the price of December, which for three minutes had ruled about %c higher than Saturday's closing price, returned to about that level again. In the course of the next 15 minutes there was another slight rise. The market began to weaken again, when the figures of the visible supply statement were received December, which started at G6%c, sold to 66%c, and recovered again to 57e, reacted from 66%¢ to 66%c, when the visible supply was indicating an increase of about 2,000,000 bu. When the amount of the increase was found to be 2178000 bu. the market rccovered a trifle in some covering purchases by the scalpers upon their finding that outside selling orders were not forthcoming, even with such tempting in- ducements. The strength in corn near the end of the session put some fresh vigor into the action of the longs In wheat and caused an advance to a fraction above its previous highest point, 57%c being quoted for an in- stant, cloxing at b7e. Corn did not show a great deal of strength fmmediately at the opening, but it did lster and it kept the shorts on the broiler dur ng the greater part of the session. The weekly local bulletin for fowa was received by a house here, who said that it reported 50 per cent of the corn crcp cut for fodder in many af the xouthern counties of that state and that as high ss 80 per cent of it had been similarly treated in some other countles That was perhaps the main reason for the trength which was developed in corn. Shorts came in freely, but a good number of the big local sherts stood pat. There was a decrease of 232,000 bushels in the amount on ocean passage. The visible sup- ply increased 114,000 bushels, as compared with an increase of 177,000 bushels last year. May corn, which on Saturday closed at G3c, started irregularly at from 52%c to Bithe. Those were the lowest prices of the day. It rose on the first swell to 5dc. and after rescting to 63%e, it advanced ain to 54c, and there were some few sales | at as high as 5434c, closing at bdc. Today almost everything in oats was bearlsh. The sess.on was active st times, and during the day quite a fair business was transacted, mostly local, however. Septem- ber started steady at 29%c, sold up to 29%e, was weakened slightly by the visible supply and sold bick to 20%e, rallied again and closed at 29%c bid. Dearer hogs, higher corn and buying by the. Anglo-American Packing company were the principal reas-ns given for another cons'derable advance in the price of provisions. The market opened firm, gradually improved, and in the end it was quite strong at the highest, prices of the day. Compared with Saturday night, January pork is 2:%c higher, January lard 25c higher, and ribs 10¢ higher. The leading futures rang-d as follows: “Avticien. | Open. | High. | Low. | Close. NEW YORK, Sept. 4.—The share specu- lation on the stock exchange open:d fairly active and during the morning the busi- ness was in moderate volume. During the last hour a very heavy business was done A selling movement In sugar was ‘start:d, based on & rumor that the dividend rate for the current quarter was to be reduced, and, as result, the stock, which had advanced e per cent at the opining, fell 1%. The general list recorded a sympathetic reac- tion, but before 11 o'clock the market had re- covered its tone and again took an upward turn. Near noon the advance was checked and prices eased off a fraction. At about 2 o'clock a very general buying movement was set in motion, the motive of which was not disclosed except that the purchasers were recently been endeavoring to bull the mar- et The reports of the rallways for August showed an Improvement in gross earnings and this fact helped the advance, which ranged from % to 2% per cent. Western Union was in better buying than usual, the purchases being made in anticipation ‘of a good report at next week's quarterly meet- ing. The shorts aleo took occasion to cover, and as a result that stock moved up 2 per cént, closing within % of the highest point touched. General Electric was bought in Boston on orders, making a gain on the day of 1% per cént Sugar recovered during the afternoon trom its early depression and the shares sold up 2% per cent, to 106%, with a final reaction of % per cent, making a net gain of 1% per cent. The Evening Post's London cablegram says: The markets were quiter today, but the tone was good, and especially for in- vestments, consols being at the highest point recorded. Americans, after weakness, showed a material recovery at the close, large blocks of Argentine water works bonds being taken in the Bank of England by a financial syndicate.
