Ona of the busiest places in the city t days is the office of the state fair off inthe Lincoln hotel. Today the counties of Douglas, Chase, Saline and Hall were heard from which' makes the total list of counties pro- posing to make a collective exhibit twenty three. One of the features of the fair will be a plat-of ground arranged to ilustrate tho method of irrigation proposed and the effects of the system. A ton, wife of the senior member of Sutton & Hollowbush, was se- verely burned about the and side this morning. S ght arm, shoulder had been burn- ing some rubbish and waste paper in the rear of the residen at 920 South Tenth street, when by some unknown means, pre sumably because, of the wind blowing garments in contact with the blaz dress took fire. Mrs. Sutton did not scr or run for help, but devoted her energies to beating out the blaze, which was consuming the front of her dress. This she succeeded her in doing, but in doing so the flames were communicated to her sleeves, and before she could get water she was terribly burned about the arms. Notwithstanding the painful wounds, she took a pafl of water and threw it on the burning rubbish, which threatened to set fire to the outbuildings, after which she walked over to the residence of a neighbor, where assistance was rendered, Her wounds are not serious. LINCOLN IN BRIEF. At the meeting of the school board last evening everything was reported In readiness for the opening of the schools. There was some question of cutting the salaries of the teache: but the legality of such aection being questioned the matter was dropped. The schools cpened today with a larger attendance than ever before in the history of the city. “Cyclone” Davis was the orator of a well attended meeting in the open air at the postoffice last evening and expounded the doctrines of the populists in his usual style. A new publication has appeared in the capital city, which fs entitled “The Chau- tauqua Idea. It 15 to be devoted to the work cf education and the assembly work of the state. The Lincoln soclalists met in the usual place last night and in connection with their other business put in considerable time In roasting the chief exccutive of the city, Mayor Weir. The grounds of their grievanca were stated to be that “never by word or deed had he shown himself to be what he claimed to be when elected a populist.”” KILLED BY HI ENDED WIKE Shot by Ella Niobrara, NIOBRARA, Neb., Sept. 4.
