SAILE. Torpedo Boat Ericeson Leaves St. Louis For Tler Final Test. ST. LOUIS, Aug. 8—The trim little tor- pedo boat, Ericeson, which received its fin- ishing touches here after being built by the Towa Iron works at Dubuque, left here today via the Mississippi river, Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic ocean for the Brooklyn navy yard, near where the trial trip will be held before the craft is turned over to the government. Owing to the low water in the upper Mis- ippi,” the” Ericcson “was several weeks ago towed down from Dubuque to anchorage off this city. Since then a force of mechan- ics from the iron works have been working night and day putting the boat into shape for its long trip. The Ericcson is only G0 feet long, 15.6 inches foot beam, with . an 11-foot hold. Every inch of space inside the hold s taken up with the engines, dynamo, coal bunkers, quarters for the crew and the ward room for the officers. Her hull is built of steel, which is also the material covering the pilot house. At present the torpedo boat has two masts, and the space on her deck is taken up with an awning, two smoke stacks and sev- eral air funnels, all of which, with the ception of the stacks, will ba Temoved when the trial is made. President Dickey of the Towa Iron works is confident that the Ericcson, which is the first, boat of the kind ever turned out by his concern, and for that matter ever buiit on inland waters, will come up to all the requirements of the government contract and may exceed the speed limit. He will accom- pany the boat to New Orleans, and go thence to New York by rail and mak? arrangements for the trial trip, which will take place on Long Island sound. Superintendent M. R. Hopikins of the fron works will stay with the boat until it is turned over to the govern- ment, when Lieutenant R. N. Usher of the United States navy, who Is also on board, will take charge. The crew consists of Cap- tain Tom Dolson, Pilot Charles O'Nell, En- gineers Jack Strinskey and William Lum- Deck, ton, and the regular complement passers and deck hands. They are perienced river men. Short stops will be made by the Ericcson for coal and mail at Cairo, Memphis, Vicks- burg, and other points. Two days will be spent at New Orleans, whers the boat wil be docked, a new serew put on and her com- passes adjusted, After leaving New Orleans the Briccson will steam for the open sea as quickly as possible, and by running day and night will endeavor to reach the Brookiyn navy yard in four or five days, in plenty of time to get ready for the trial trip about September 1.
