Interesting Gathering of Omahans at the Resldence of Mrs. Mathewson. LOS ANGELES, July 23.—(Special to The Bee.)—The recent visit of Dr. and Mrs. R. C. Moore of Omaha to this city was made the occasion for an Interesting gathering of Omahans at the residence of Mrs. P. H Mathewson on Omaha Heights in East Los Angeles. The Omaha past residents who were present were Judge and Mrs. Groff, Mrs. Gregory, Judge and Mrs. Porter, Mr. and Mrs. M. G. McKoon, Mr. and Mrs. S C. Hawyer, Mrs. A. B. Slaughter and Mrs, Carr and two daughters. These persons are all residents of different parts of Los An- geles. The reception was given in honor of the doctor and his wife, E. A. Lambeth of Nebraska City has lately been on a visit to Willlam Campbell of the grocery firm of W. L. Robbins & Co., in Stocton. Mr. Campbell I8 a recent Ne- braskan who lately removed to Stocton, bringing with him $25,000 which he invested in business In this state. Mr. Lambeth has been corresponding with the City Press of Nebraska City. John F. Blunt, a former real estate agent and dealer of Omaha, 18 now editor of the Unlon, a daily newspaper at San Diego. George Hockwell of McCook, Neb., has traded a block of business property at Me- Cook for forty acres of oranges near Covina in Los Angeles county. The parlies taking the Nebraska property are Robert and James laldridge, who will likely remove to Ne- braska. J. R. Johnson of Crete, Neb., has purchased 208" acres of land at West Riverside, the owner being G. A. Fridicar. The prics pald Was $70,000, Mr. and Mrs. G. C. Younglove of Silver Bow, Neb., have removed to San Luls Oblspo, where they have joined their son, C. A. Younglove, who resides at that place. The old folks will remain in California, W. Coddington and wife, three sons and Mrs. P. L. Langford, their daughter, have removed from Auburn, Neb., to Pomone, bringing their household goods with them. King, an attorney of Wayne, Neb., has purchased a lemon orchard in the Linda Vista district of San Diego county. Dr. H. C. Manary and wife of Lincoln, Neb., have recently been visiting southern California. Dr. Manary is assistant super- intendent of the Nebrask state insane asylum and one of the objects of his visit to the coast was to inspect the insane asylums of California and Oregon. Mr. Carpenter works at Hammond's and Mr. Young is timekeeper at Swift's. The two wero on_thelr way home about 6 o'clock in Mr. Young's buggy, and were driving out Twenty-fourth street and had just passed I street when they were run down by a heavy tran fer wagon and frightfully bruised, cut and wounded. The heavy wagon was being driven by Henry Grabbert, who had left his tezm unhitehed and was climbing up to the high seat of his wagon when a motor car passed, and the horses stirted on a fast ran north on Twenty-fourth street. Before going 100 yards the team ran Into the rear of Mr. Young's buggy. The ' big tongue of the wagon struck the buggy squarely in the center of the rear axle and smashed the outfit into kindling wood in a jiffy. The driver of the big wagon was thrown to the pavement before the collision occurred and Mr. Young and Mr. Carpenter were pitched up under the rear end of the heavy wagon, bleeding and wounded. They were carried to the porch of Albert Borch's saloon and attended by Dr. Thomas Kelley and Dr. Slabaugh. Two hours later they wero taken to their homes. It will be several days before they are able to be out, were nance Death of Mr. Lay 's Mother, Mrs, Bleanor Woods, mother of Mr. D. B. Layton, aged 83 vears, dled at the home of her son, two miles south of this city, yester- day morning. The funeral took place this afternoon at 2 o'clock, the remains being laid to rest in Laurel Hill cemetery. Mrs. Woods came to this vicinity six years ago and has made her home with her son ever since. She was a woman beloved by all who knew her, having a kind and loving disposition and being a Christian lady who was always trying to do something to make others happy. = Mr. Layton Is one of the two oldest and wealthiest ~residents of Sarpy county. He has made the declining years of his aged mother as comfortable as possible and has the sympathy of a large circle of acquaintances in his loss, The funcral was largely attended Gamblers Veraus Gamblors. Thomes Spohn and Mr. Martin were ar- rested on complaint of Grant Roger, charg- ing them with ganbling at faro. The war- rant was issued from Justice Montgomery's court and the defendants were placed under $300 bonds each to appear for trial Friday. It is claimed that the defendants have gambled at different houses n boih Omaha and South Omaha and that after losing money they have brought suits to recover what cash they allege to have lost. In each case, however, It Is sald they have comprom ised matters and withdrawn the suits. The gamblers look upon them as blackmailers, and It is proposed to prosecule them under the state law. CHICAGO, July 23.—The coroner was called today to investigate the rather myster~ lous death of Thomas Cleary, nephew of Archbishop Cleary of Kingston, Ont., who has been employed as a bookkeeper in a whole- sale hardware cabinet establishment on Franklin street. Cleary was found by of- flcers staggering along Loomis street between Madison and Monroe streets last night, Thinking he wa under the influence of liquor the officers called a_ patrol wagon and Cleary was taken to the hospital, where he died ~soon afterward. The physiclans thought death might have resulted from con- cussion of the brain, but no marks of vio- lence were to be found anywhere on the body. Ed Clark of Ashland reports that Sunday a man stole his bicycle and started toward this city. The team and wagon of August Keysor of Bennington was stolen Sunday night. The thicves entered tho stable, harnessed th horses, hitched them to the wagon and then drove away. John Danlels was arrested by Officer Lever- ton last night as a suspicious character, Danicls had in his possession about twentys five pounds of brass boxing belonging to street cars. It was suspected that the brasses were stolen. Sunday night the hardware store of Wil- liam Carlisle of Blair was burglarized and $150 worth of knives, revolvers and shelf goods stolen. This morning the burglars were traced to Omaha, but in the vicinity of Calhoun the trall was lo e e S Check Wan Worthless. Ira W. Wasson came In from Gretna last Saturday and was soon a good customer at Fred Dahlman's saloon. After a time his ready cash was exhausted, and then he induced the proprietor to cash a check for §27.80, drawn on a South Omaha bank. Yesterday Dahlman discovered that the check was worthless and at once hunted up Wasgon, he might be given an opportunity of squaring matters. The man was found and taken to South Omaha, where he Invited Dahlman into a saloon to have a drink. Dahlman accepted, and then engaged in a game of high five' with Mr. Wasson. As the game proceeded the man from Gretna remarked that he had to step outside for a moment, at the same time requesting Dahlman to wait until he returned.
