COMMERCIAL AND FINANCIAL Wheat Eolipsed All Low Wheat Reoords in Yesterday's Trading. HEAVY LIQUIDATION ON THE ADVANC Dry Weathor In the Corn Belt Made the Market for thut Cerenl Very Strong In the Face of the Decline In Whoat, CHICAGO, July 23.—Wheat eclipsed all low wheat records today, September touch- ing 527%c. Outside markets at home and abroad were weak, and this, with other bear- ish news, caused the decline, the market closing 1c lower, and but %c from the bot- tom figures. Corn was firm, closing 1%4c higher. Oats closed %c higher, and pro visions finished at a slight decline Wheat opening trades were at %c advance and gradually rallicd from Y%e to %e more, declined 17c, advanced Ygc, changed some and olosed weak. The carly steadiness was attributed some to the action of corn and the decrease on ocean passage of 840,000 bu. At the advance there was heavy liquidation and offerings much larger, due partly against purchases in the interior and to longs selling out. The lower cables, lberal recelpts at winter wheat points and the break at Minneapolos all combined to make the situation weak. Outside markets were all lower, there being a sensational break in the northwest, and this was one of the principal weakening features. The visible supply showed an increase of 617,000 bu., and was one of the weakening features There was a general lack of support to the market and no demand to speak of outside the buying by shorts. The export clear- ances of wheat and flour were light and ag- gregated 203,000 bu., of which 67,000 bu was in flour. Continental markets generally weaker, There was no export business donc here. Dry weather in the corn belt corn market very strong in the face of the decline in wheat. Shorts covered freely and the buying was liberal. STOCH AND BONDS, Moving Influence in Atchison Atehison Diselosure. NEW YORK, July 23.—The moving influ- enco of the share speculation today was the disclosure in regard to the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Rallroad company, resulting from Expert Little's examination of the com- pany's accounts. According to his state- ments, the income of the company since the last reorganization, in 1889, has been over- stated some $7,000,000 by reascn of the fact that rebates allowed to shippers were not properly charged on the books. It seems that over $2,000,000 of these rebates have been adjusted, leaving something less than $5,000,- 000 siill unsettled and carried as floating debt. While the reba'e system was inaugu- rated by President Manvel, it was continued under President Reinhart, wio has, as ecca- sion permitted, lessened tne amounts by charging them off (o operating expenses. The appointment of receivers necessarily resulted in the bringing to light of the facts, as well as causing a discontinuance of the rebate system. In the Was the London market today both stock and bonds of the company were depressed by the news and the publication in London of the statement of Robert Fleming, repre- sen'ative here of the forelgn security holders, that Little's report showed an earn- ing capacity sufficient to provide for the fixed charges under the proposed plan of reorganization, had not the effect of restor- ing the shaken confidence of the forelgners | 4 e cents in the property, and not alone were (he stock and bonds sold abroad, but both London and the continent cabled selling orders in this market and started the decline here, Atchison stock here has reached such a low point that a serious decline would wipe it out altogether. It did break 7% per cent, the closing price being at a rally of % per cent. The bonds were heavier and lower, the fours selling down 4 per cent to 7 and closing at 71, and the seconds 2% per cent to 20, with a final recovery (o 20%. The effect of the Atchison discovery on the general stock market was disastrous, and there was heavy selling of shares of othier companies, under suspicion of pursuing similar bookkeeping devices. A good des of long stock was brought out and the bears hammered the stocks In turn, which gav evidence of weakness. The course of prices was practically downward, all the forenoon and up to delivery hour, at which time Mis- sourl Pacific had declined 2% per cent, DI tilling 1% per cent, St. Paul and Union Pacific 1% per cent, Northwest, Rock I land, Northen Pacific preferred and Denver & Rlo Grande preferred 1% per cent, Bur- lington & Quincy and United States Leather red 1 per cent, and the rest of the list a smaller fraction. After 2:15 o'clock there was some covering of short contracts and the lower range of values induced purchasers for the long account, which combined to bring ahout a recovery of % to 1% per cent This rally was maintained to the close, ex cept in a few instances, Burlington & Quin §t. Paul, Rock Island, Missouri Pacific, Dis tilling and Lead receding % per cent. Sugar was the excaption to the rest of the market and led in the transactions, monopolizing more than onc-half of the entire business Opening % per cent higner, at 103, the stock receded to 1020, rose to 1033, broke to 101%, and then, about 11:30, took a sharp upward turn to 105% on good buying, induced by reports that the tariff bill was likely to fail, leaving the McKinley bill in force. In the final dealings, a reaction of % per cent took place, but the tone of the market at the close was strong. The bond market was weak y and closed rather heavy. The Evening Post says: Today's down- ward movement of prices began with foreign selling of Atchison securities, for which there was unfortunately abundant reason. It has been long suspected that the sceret of the Atchison bubble-blowing of two and three years ago had not yet reached its end. Supply and MONDAY The week opens with a gain in the re- ceip's of both cattle and hogs, there being in round numbers 900 cattle, 4,900 hogs and 820 sheep, as against 661 cattle, 1,685 hogs, and 606 sheep on Monday of last week. TTLE—~While the reccipts of cattle amounted to about 900 head, fourteen loads were billed direct to the packers and there could not have many over 500 head on sale. Out of this number there were only a few good corn fed beeves, so that no very fair test of the strength of the market was possible. The packers wanted a few cattle, and bought them at an advance of fully 10c and 16¢c, The feeling on the market was decldedly better. The shippers, however, were no' trying to do anything, although castern markets appeared to be more favor- able. The market on butchers' stock did not show any change of importance. There was a good deal of trashy stuff, which Is selling very low and fs slow sale at most any price. There appeared to be a little more inquiry for the better grades. The market on calves was no better, being slow and weak at last week's decline. The market on stockers and feeders was very slow. There were no fresh receipts of any account and the offerings were mostly those in the hands of the regular dealers. The country demand seems to have suddenly disappeared, and the dry weather is gener- ally the cause ascribed. The few cattle that changed hands brought about Saturday's prices. Good to choice cattle of this descrip- tion are generally quoted at about §2.70 to §3, while the commoner grades sell anywhere from $2.50 down. Representative sales: DRESSED BEEF, Av. There was a prelty fair demand, and the market was reasonably active, the bulk of the hogs selling at’ the decline noted. “The later re- ports from eastern markets proving favor- able, the active demand had a strengthening effect upon the market and the close was firmer, the highest prices being paid at the last. I have taken some twice since when I had a loosness come on and it stopped it at once. I hope it will help others as it helped me. I feel ry thankful to Mr. Stearns, the drug for telling m of this remedy and sh glad to have this lett published. 8. Veeks, Melrose, Mass. Platt pronounced against a stralght ticket and in favor of a union of all forces opposed to Tammany rule, though be insists the head of the ticket must be a re- publican Mr. Platt says: "I have never sald that I was in favor of a straight republican ticket this fall, and as a matter of fact, I think all those elcments of our ciuzenship which are opposed to the present government of our city ought to get together and make a_ticket that would be generally satisfactory. I have sald again that the head of any such ticket must be a republican. To that I adhere, We have tried the experiment of electing reform democrats here and it does not work. They invariably come to forget that they were ed to bring about a revolution in the cons duct of municipal affairs, and the idea that sooner or later possesses them Is that they must take care of the national democratic party. They want to be good, but only so far as s consistent with the success of the democratic state and national tickets. Their acts are performed with one eye fixed on Albany and the otlier on Washington, and none at all on the welfare of this city, Re- publicans have had all the expericnce of that sort they want, The demand for a re- publican candidate for mayor, a re publican who thoroughly represents his party, I8 uni- versal among republicans and Is a sine qua non of the combination -~ Letter Which Itself.
