Frontier County—Corn planting nearly done; small grain rulned; grass drylng up; outlook gloomy. Furnas County—Light, local rains, but not enough to do much good. Small grain mostly ruined; corn not damaged very much vet, but will be an entire fallure without early and abundant rain. Stock will soon have to be fed, with nothing on hand for feed. Every- body discouraged Harlan County--Light local rains last woek, but now as dry as ever. Small grainy about n fallure. Corn at a standstiil. Po- tatoes poor. Hitcheock County—Light shower of Tues- day not enough to do any good. Not more than half intended acreage of corn was planted. Very little corn sprouted and what did sprout is mostly dead. ~Upland pastures dead. Many farmers are leaving. Kearney County—Rain of 20th gave some hopes for small crop in som tions. Sheridan County—Small grain and corn looking well, though some localities need rain badly Dawes County—Crops have grown nicely, but would do much better with a good rain, Keya Paha County—Very dry: wheat badly domaged; oats and gardens almos total failure; deep planted corn looks fair; shallow plented or listed drying up. Reek County graln soffering for rain; grass very backward; corn showing through. ‘The week has been favorable for work in the fields, but everything is suffer- ing for rain. RUDIGER COMPLETELY PROSTRATED Hearing of tho Case Post Pending the Defendant's Recovery - Polie rings Suit fo Foes—Dell Akin's o Sult—Court Cullings. The proceedings n the Rudiger trial, on for hearing in the criminal section of the district court, were given a somewhat sen- sational shock yesterday, and, ns a res sult, the case went over until today, at which time, If the defendant is in a condi- tion to withstand the mental and physical strain, the work of sccuring a jury will bo resumed Monday night when court adjourned it was noticed that Eloiso Rudiger, the prisoner, appeared faugued and worn out with the confinement of seven months In the county Jall. In leaving the room she had to be assisted down tho stairs and to the Jail. After reaching that place and being locked in her cell she became deathly sick, but re- covered to some extent during the night and yesterday when she started for the court room she was feefing much better than for some days past. At the usual hour the court convened and the examination of the jurors in the box was resumed, when suddenly and without any warning the prisoner fainted and was falling to the floor, when sho was caught in the arms of the assistant jailer. Tho woman was carried into the private room of the judge, where she was revived, after which & messenger was dispatched for Dr. Tilden, who was appointed by Judge Scott to treat the case. After making an ex- amination the doctor stated that the woman was completely prostrated and that sho would not be in a condition to appear at the trial again yesterday. This announcement having been made the jurors who were kept in the box were excused for the day and the prisoner conducted back to the jail, The fainting of the prisoner in the court room crea a scene for a moment, as the room was filled with spectators, many. of whom were women. Dailift. Willlams, how- ever, was onto his job and promptly quelled everything that had the appearance of dis- order. The county attorney in discussing the sud- den sickness of Mrs, Rudiger said that It was the strongest card that she could have played and that it would do more toward securing her liberty than the testimony of a dozen witnesses. He did not think that she was feigning sickness, but he did think that be- coming sick at the particular time was very opportune, if her interests were taken into consideration. At the time, he said, the room was full of jurors and that all of them were witnesses to the procecdings, and while as a matter of fact, what occurred might not prejudice their minds, it would throw a great deal of sympathy into the balances, sympathy which no amount of testimony could remove. Injured on the Road, John Niemeyer has sucd James Stephenson in an action to recover the sum of $25,000, alleged damages. The plaintiff avers that he was a driver for the defendant and that Quring the month of April, 1894, he was in- structed to drive a hack from this city to Weston, conveying sonie passengers. On the way over to the Towa town, not being ac- quainted with the road, the plaintiff drove down a stecp hill and as he was going along the pole straps gave way, letting the vehicle onto the heels of the horses. They at once began to kick, and soon became unmanagea- ble. The plaintiff alleges that he was thrown from the seat, in front of the wheels, which passed over his body, inflicting many bruises and breaking a leg. Waits Damages from the Motor.
