Sugar Mo tion In Securitie NEW YORK, June 5.—Sugar monopolized the speculative attention of the Stock ex- change today, more than half of the busi- ness having been done in the shares of the Sugar trust. It was a very exciting day for the operators in this mercurial property, the fluctuations in which were both wide and frequgnt. The buying was at times very strong, and again the selling was very heavy. A jump of 1% per cent was made at the opening, and a further advance of per cent, then, on brisk selling, a reaction of % per cent took place, but buying orders were met, which absorbed all the offerings, and another rise resulted, which sent the stock up to 106%. This purchasing movement was based the result of the voting on the amendments in the se which showed that the anticipated program was to be carried out. But when the top figure was reached a good deal of stock came out, which checked the purchasing movement, inasmuch as it led to a belief that some interest was marketing the sfock on the bull news, and that it was likely that an insider was feeding the shares to the traders. This suspicion induced realizing sales as well as stopping the buying, and a sharp break of 23 per cent took place to 10 The lower range was mamtained for but a while, when renewed purchases caused a quick’ recovery, the stock closing within % per cent of the highest point touched and at an advance of % per cent on the day. Sugar preferred rosc 1% per cent to 96, but reacted to 94% on realizing sales. ~ The granger group was most active of the rail way list, but St. Paul and Burlington re- cefved most attention, the former being sold by London and the latter, very moderately, however, by Boston. An opening advance of 1 per cent in St. Paul was followed by a decline of % per cent, the last sale belng within % per cent of the bottom. Rock Island lost % per cent and Northwest % per cent. Northwest preferred broke 2 per cent fn a sale of 100 shares. The bond mar- ket was easier during the morning, but closed firmer. The Evening Post says: Sugar certifi- cates furnished almost the sole mark of activity on today's stock market. The stock was marked up 2 points on the first transaction, and after a brief intervening reaction, was pushed up still another point or more to 107. The vote taken In the senate today on the sugar schedule, the re- sult of which was assumed in advance as favorable, was the only argument employed. The supply was not as heavy as dealers were ex pecting, and with a lHght run and a higher market in Chicago, buyers and sellers soon together, Trade Wwere got opened active, with prices pretty dime higher Monday on Both dressed men and shippers and exporters supplies and when tho cattle were sirable there was no hesitation the advance, A8 a result the movern free throughout and trading comparatively early hour, the close being decidedly strong With the usual six or eight on sale there was no material change in the market. Desirable fat cows and heifers met with a ready salo at steady to strong prices while on the under grades trading dragged and prices ruled weak. The calf market w generally unchanged, with prices to lower than a weck ago. Rough of all kinds was in fair demand firm prices. Business in stockers and feoders continuos to pick up satisfactorily notwithstanding the continued dry weather in many tributary sections of country. Local rains, however have improved the country demaud some what and prices have firmed up on all suit able grades. There was a fair amount of business transacted, with sales Jargely at from $3 to $3.20. The market averaged up a big nickel higher in prices, but considering the greatly improved quality of the offerings the advance was not nearly so much. Heavy supplies made buyers bearish at the open- ing, packers particularly trying to get their hogs at bare Monday's prices. A fair ship- ping demand, however, and good reports from Chicago soon changed the situation, and when dealers finally got down to busi- ness it was on the basis of about a nickel advance, fair to good hogs of all weights sclling largely at $4.45 and $4.50. Buying was brisk, and with good competition” the market firmed up as the morning advanced, and the same hogs on the late market sold mostly at $4.50, with quite a few of (he bet- ter buteher weight and heavy loads at $4.62 and §4. The close was active and strong at the advance, and the pens were cleared by the middle of the forenoon. Heavy hogs commanded the usual slight premium over light weights, but the bulk of the trad- ing was at $4.45 and $4.50, as against $1.40 and $4.45 Monday. On last-Saturday the hogs s0ld mostly at $4.50 and $4.55. ~ Rep- resentative sales: Av. Sh, Pr. Al W0 10 0 10 s Pr 120 $4 50 160 4 50 PNEUMATIC “COUCH ™ $6.85 THIS IA A CUT OF IT.
