has all Wheat Had Many Friends in the Pit and Closed Higher, CORN TRADE WAS ONLY MODERATE A Stronger and Higher Market—Pro- visions Opened Weak on Lower rices for Hogs. CHICAGO, May 9.—Wheat had many frionds today and closed %ec higher. Crop damage in California and rumors of Argen tine financlal troubles caused a moderately bullish feeling, but free selling and large norMhwestorn recelpts prevent advance. Corn and closed e higher, but provisons finished lower all around. In wheat tho opening transuctions were at a trifle advance, and after rallying from e c,worked back %e, rallled from e to 3¢ d some, ruled firm and closed steady The market advanced on the California crop damage and the Argentine finaneial troubles, Jt being supposed that with a panic at the latier place wheat shipments would be next to impossible, owing to the difficulty in negotiating exchange. Cables, however, were dull and disappointing and northwestern re ceipts wer twice as large as a year lower cables | In Oats There Was & Good Tusiness and i an onts abou ago, both of which were factors In checking any further advance, The corn trade was only moderate and fluctuations were within a %@%c range. was rather bullish. The buying was liberal, and prices, after opening from 3e to e higher, advanced from %e to %e more, but receded from ¥e to %c and ciosed qniet. With a decline in prices for live hogs at the yards, provisions opened weak and lower and then fluctuated within a_very narrow range during the first hour of the session, with the tendency downward. Later the offerings became more free, the packers scll ing. Shortly before the end of the session there was a partial reaction on a little buy- ing, with the closing steady all around. Lead was moderately active, but list was intensely dull, are given in the order of thelr activity, which places Sugar in the lead. This usually mercurial property was exceptionally steady today. After a loss of % per cent at the opening on a heavy pressure to sell, the fluctuations during the rest of the day were confined within a 1 per cent limit. Large blocks of Distilling stock came on the market and there being no eupport the stock broke 1% to 2% per cent. No de- pressing rumors wers present to account for sales, but there was no particular desire on the part of any one to buy the stock and the closing price was within 1% per cent of the lowest point touched. General Electric opened % per cent higher and then sagged off gradually uuder steady selling until a decline of 1% per cent had been recorded. There was some buying of the shares in the late dealings and the closing prices were % per cent above the lowest. Reports of rate cutting and the decline in wheat affected the. grangers unfavorably and there were selling orders from the west, based presum- ably on these conditions. Burlington & Quincy was alsc sold by Boston on the re- vival of the rumors touching the decrease in the dividend rate. The decline on the day, however, only ranged from % to % per cent, the latter in Northwestern. Natlonal Lead fell off 1% per cent In the morning, trading on sales of stock acquired in the bellef that a dividend was to be declared, a rumor to that effect having been circulated some days ago. A rally of % per cent was made in the late transactions. In the rest of tha market speculation was dull and the change on the day merely fractional. The market closed fairly steady. The bond market was firm on a small busi- ness. The Evening Post says: No news of significance to the stcck market appeared today, except the announcement of $1,900,000 gold engagements for tomorrow’s steamers. This was expected and had no apparent in- fluence on prices. All the gold was obtained today by the presentation of government bonds for redemption, which wiil run the federal gold balance down close to $93,000,- 000. The irritating fact in these operations is the unsound financial law which compels the treasurer to put these notes agaln im- mediately into circulation, thus reducing the reserve without reducing the obligations to guard which the reserve was founded. The general cattle market was tolerably active, with prices as a rule a trifle firmer. Recelpts were not by any means heavy, and there was not such a large proportion of heavy cattle as on the two preceding days. Most of the cattle were light and medium welghts, 1,200 Ibs. and under, and this made the trade more lively, as all classes of buyers are usually anxious for this kind of stock Dressed beef men, especially, all appeared to have good buying orders, and early prices ruled fully steady. Later outside butchers started in to buy light cattle and prices ad- vanced ¢ to 10c in many cases. The heav- fer grades were dull and no higher. They were in lighter supply, and while the de- mand was no better they were more casily moved than on Tuesday. Aside from the heavy cattle the market was active and strong, and by noon a very fair clearance of all classes of stock had been effected There were only ten to a dozen loads of cows and mixed stuff in the yards, and the market exhibited no new features. Good fat stock was all right, buyers all wanted it and prices ruled strong. There was not a great deal of the common stuff in the yards, but what there was sold no better. Calves were in very light supply and firmer, and the market for rough stock of all kinds was active and strong. The stocker and feeder trade was decid- edly dull, in fact there was scarcely any thing doing. Yard traders’ supplies were larger than they needed, and they were con- sequently very indifferent buyers of the fresh offerings, especially as the demand from the country was somewhat slack. Prices got too high to suit country dealers, and they are evidently waiting for a decline, Prices were off fully a dime today. ood to chofce feeders are quoted at $3.25@3.75; fair to good at $3.00@3.25, and lighter, com- moner grades at from $3 down. HOGS—It looks very much as if the props had been knocked out from under the market and prices are dropping fast. The weakness in provisions s enabling buyers to pound the hog market successfully, and they have taken off 15c In thre> days without a strug- gle, and in the face of a big decrease In sup- plis. The run today was nearly 3,000 lighter than a week ago and the market was fully a quarter lower than at that time. Compared with Tuesday prices were a big 10c lower. There was some shipping de- mand, but very little from speculators, as Chicago was reported weak and lower. Local houses were all decidedly bearish and trade was rather dull from the start, although a trifle more active at the close. The popular price for fair to good hogs of all weights was $4.80, with quite a few of the better loads at $4.821% and $4.85, and an extreme tcp of $4.90. The pens were cleared in good season, the bulk at from $4.80 to $4.85, as against $4.90 to $4.95 Tuesday and $6.06 a week ago. Repre- sentative sales: No. Av. Sh. Pr. No. Av. 8h.
