LOUTS, with fair demand for STOCKS AND BONDS. Week Opened In Securities Firm Tone NEW YORK, April 9.—The week opened on the Stock exchange with a firm tone to the speculation and in most cases the first prices made were a fraction above the closing figures of Saturday. During the morning the trading was fairly active, and except for some of the specialties, the mar- ket was steady to strong. During the after- noon the volume of business was light and the dealings were irregular, the market closing dull, but fairly steady with a ma- Jority ‘of the shares traded in showing an avance on the day's transactions. Chicago Gas was most prominent in the dealings and was sold sharply at the. opening on a report that the decision of the attorney general of Illinols in the quo warranto pro- ceedings would be against the company. After a decline of 7% per cent, supporting orders were received, rosulting in a recovery of % per cent, followed by a reaction of 1 per cent and a rally of % per cent, mak- ing a net loss of % per cent. Sugar was second in point of activity. Opening Y% per cent higher, it sold up 1% per cent additional on purchase tnduced by a belief that probably the farift bill may not become a law, on which contingency the sugar company would make large profits, A goodly proportion of the buying is said to have been for insiders. Later in the day reallzatlons and a small bear rald causod a reaction of 7 per cent, the close being at a gain on the day of % per cent. The grangers were only moderately active, advancing a fraction in the morning and reacting during the afternoon, Burlington showing a decline at the close of % per cent, Rock Island 1 per cent, Northwestern unchanged for the common and 1 per cent ligher for the preferred, and St. Paul made a gain of % per cent and St. Paul preferred # per cent. There was good buying on Richnond Terminal third assessment paid, the stock advancing % per cent and closing at the highest point touched. The purchases were induced by reports that the reorgan- ization of the company would shortly be completed. The Bvening Post says: The noteworthy general movement of prices lately begun continued today in the other markets and had as before its due influence on stocks. Wheat was strong in spite of the heavy speculative realizing, and silver bullion rallied again in London in the direction of last week's highest figure. By all ac- counts the oriental demand continues heavy, while the supply from transatlantic poris barely increases. A rather striking incl- dent of the last month or two has been the shipment of gold from India and China. London's receipts of this metal from China in February and March were £484,000 and £208,000 came from .India in March alone In the last two weeks, however, since the breaking of the Bombay panic, a moderate return movement of gold to India has begun, The foliowing are the closing quotations on the lending stocks of the New York exchango today: Kichison Adanin EXpross. There were offy 127 cars of all kinds here and of these there 90 cattle. The cattle market was much of a surprise as the receipts Prices ruled from 10 to 16c higher Saturday, and it seldom that 2,000 change hands quicker than they did On account of the favorable tone tc advices shipping and speculativ were in the saddle early and business. Liberal outside orders and the smallness of the supply made the dressed beef men anxious, and taken altogether sellers found conditions very much to their liking. The general quality of the cattle offered was very falr, but there were no strictly choice beeves here. ( 200 to 1,400 beeves sold at from $3.70 up to $4.15, and falr to good 1,000 1,150-1b steers sold readily at from $3.60 to $3 Fair to poor stuff and odds and ends went at from $3.40 down. It was a good, st active, healthy market from start to finish and by 10 o'clock business was practically over. The same activity characterized the trade in butchers' and canners’ stock, but there was no quotable advance in prices. Offer- ings included less than a dozen loads, and buyers soon picked them up. The market for veal calves was firm and for rough stock of all kinds active and strongc Stockers and feeders were in good demand and higher. The fresh supply was light and the pens were by no means crowded with stale cattl Regular dealers were ull good buyers and quite a few hay-fed west- erns went over the scales at from $3.25 to The fecling on all sides was firm Good to cholce feaders are quoted at fron $3 to $3.65; fair to good at §$2.75 to $3, and lighter, commoner grades at from $2.7 down. uuprw-mum-, sales DR BEF. Sellers again had the upper hand and experienced no trouble in working off their holdings at a be to 10¢ ad- vance. There was only one shipper (Squire) in the field and speculators were a trifle shy, but the local contingent were 1 anxious for supplies, and the meager offerings changed lands fike hot cakes.
