8 COMMERCIAL AND FINANCIAL Wheat Fluctuated Oonsiderably and Closed | witha FPractional G THAT CEREAL OPENED VERY STRONG Largely Corre- and te Duluth Ine and Minneapolls Reported ensed Receipts Over th sponding Day Last Yeur 1 Were Lig rance CHICAGO, Fob, 1.-~The wheat market to- day though weak in the middle was firm at both ends and closed with a gain of %c. The early strongth was due to the tional English political news and of damage to the and short buying. Jowed owing to sales Indu northwestern receipts and lighter clearances, but some good buying orde r the close sent prices up again, Corn closed with a loss of %e for May. May oats are %o Jower and provisions slightly higher. Wheat opened with May %c higher and Immediately began climbing. ternational politics figured largely in early advance, the Indications of an Eng- Jieh crisis inducing some short buying. Li erpool quoted an advance in futures and re- ported a decrease in stocks. The Cincin- natl Price Current stated that some crop damage had occurred during the last week, ating the status of the crop and this » the shorts that they Captain Phillips was an_active buyer and Schwartz-Dupee also took offerings rather freely, Prices con- tinued to advance for a time and then r ceipts and clearances caused a tempora break. Duluth and Minneapolis reported 23 cars against 112 on the corresponding day last year, and clearanc although slightly larger than yesterday, were light The selling became rather free and May wheat went down, but closing cables wei encouraging and near the close a batch of buying orders sent prices up again, May closing at the top figures of the d May openod at 63%ec, advanced e, lost He and reacted ¥%e to the close at 64%c There was very little news in the market, trading being lght limited to from %e to e ing displayed was easier and strictly lowe prices ruled. The weaker tone was due lurgely to prospective lar; ipte. Opening trades were at yesterday's final figures, but the price soon worked down #4e, rallied a fraction and closed with May but 1ye above the bottom figures of the day. In oats there was a moderate pressure to sell long stuff and a steadier feeling earlier, owing (o the strength of wheat, which was followed by weakness and a %e to e decline in May. At the close May but e above the lowest figures of the day. The speculative market for provisions opened steady and slightly higher for pork on the receipts of live hogs being about 4,000 less than estimated, with an advance in prices for them. On a little selling and in the absence of support, the market sold off to some extent below yesterday's final figures. Trading was very limited all around with the local crowd bearish. Later on a lit- tle buying by a prominent commission house and a leading packing Institution, a firmer feeling prevailed and (he market advanced 10 a limited extent. The market acquired some strength on the support accorded to it and closed firm near the outside figures of the day. Compared with last night May pork is 2%c higher, May lard 2%c higher, and May ribs unchanged. Estimated receipts for tomorrow 78 cars; corn, 460 cars; oats, 11 23,000 head. NEW YORK, Feb. 1L—There was very little more activity in the stock market to- day than on yesterday, but the speculation was firmer in tone and as a result of the trading the active shares, with a few ex- ceptions, show an advance rangmg from % to 1% per cent compared with the closing figures of yesterday, Sugar and Distilling being most prominent therein. The excep- tions are Union Pacific which has declined 1% per cent, and Atchison, Missourl Pa- cific and Louisville & Nasnville, which are down 3§ to 14 per cent. Sugar, as usual, led in the transaction and after an carly decline of % per cent to 7i%, took an upturn on heavy purchases, said to be largely for the account of insiders. The advance was at first resisted by the short interest and reactions were frequent, but the buying movement was too strong and the bears were forced to cover during the afternoon, the prices touching 78%c, closing at a reaction of 7% per cent, but 11 per cent above yesterday. The preferred sales on 200 shares rose 13 per cent. One of the things which lead the shorts to become buyers was _a statement which came from a’ pretty authoritative source, to the effect that the American Sugar Refining company had sufficient cash resources to continue the present rate of dividend on tlie common stock for some time to come, even if free sugar were to be scheduled in the tariff bill. Distilling was strong at the opening and advenced steadily with only trivial * reactions almost to the close, the highest quotation being 283, which was 1% per cent above last night's closing. In the final dealings a reaction of % per cent oc- curred, due to realizings. The improve- ment in Distilling was due largely to pur- chases for the western account. The grangers were firmly held, fluctuating within narrow limits, and were not actively dealt in. With the exception of Northwest- ern, which is unchanged, they show an ad- vance of a small fraction. Unton Pacific was weak on a practical confirmation” of the report that an assessment is to be placed on the stock, according to the plan of reorganization figures being 10 and 20 per cent. Senator Brice, one of the reorgan- ization committee, 18 ‘given as authority that the stock assessment will be issued. London was the largest seller of the shares, which broke 1% per cent, recovering % per cent. The general list was active through- out the morning, but closed with fair ad- vances having been established. The Post says: Nobody would be apt to understand today’s market who has not watched on previous occasions the move- ment of prices when the rank and file has long been selling stocks. The market under such conditions cannot be kept well down unless through heavy sales of genuine long stocks. There have, by most accounts, already been some sales of this character in some quarters, but the short interest out- standing was so large that the sales have been absorbed with small disturbances. Lon- don sold Union Pacific stock at the start on the story that an assessment on the stock had been decided upon. What the future has in store for this corporation it is im- possible to say, but talk of terms and con- ditions of the reorganization, when the basis of government debt settlement is still un- known, is nothing but ignorant or malicious nonsense. Greater Activity Noted and Prices. New York, Feb, 1.—The Iron Age says: “During the past weck the improvement in certain branches of the iron frade has gained further headway and a far more cheerful tone prevails. The past week has been very active in western stecl markets. The low prices made on steel billets, §15at Pittsburg, has been undoubtedly made but in few cases, as a heavy demand in tho wire trade has lead to a heavy purchase of billets and a iarge volume of inquirics. The lowest prices huve been withdrawn and makers are now asking more money, both for billets and for wire rods. Developments this week will tell whether this advance, as yet nominal, will cause buyers to withdraw. In certain dry and forge irons theve is bevter feeling so far as the volume of business is concerned, but prices are sull very weak and iv will take quite large sales before an improvement sets in In the wire trade, a stiffening in prices has taken place as a result of large orders, in- duced obviously by the lower orices. Greater uctivity is also prevading barbed wire trade, CLEVELAND, O. Feb, 1.—The Tron Trade Review this week says: The improvement in_the iron trade shows that ucreasing sales have continued the past week, and there is a more general disposition to concede bet- terment. Prices, however, are Just as low as in the week preceding. 1t may be that the hopes of scllers have some influence upon their judgment, but the belief 1s expressed that some of the buying seen in the lust ten days is the result of the conviction that the depth of the market Hus been reached and that the hirst signs of pardening prices may be looked for very Soon. On the part of some authovities in the 'trade there is dispo- sition to think that séme of the activity Iately noted is due to the strenguhening im- p:ession that the Wilson bill cannot pass the senate in anything Hie its present form, and that with the incomo tix feature eliminated, there must be a substantial increase in du- ties ip muany lines: or that the present ses- sion at least will seé no'change in the Mc Kinley act. inerease, 1 ght Better- the ——- Big Fallure ot/ Kansas City.
