A most peculiar state of affairs has de- veloped with reference to gas and water pipes laid in cortain portions of the city, 88 they are completely caten up in from twelve to twenty months from the time they are first laid. So much of a nuisance has it become from the constant tearing up of the streets that is rendeved necessary by making re pairs that. Sewer Commissioner Furay has taken the matter in charge and is making thorough Investigation as to tho probable cause and the most effective remedy. Inasmuch as the district affected is that portion bounded by Lake on the north, Cass on the south, Sixteenth on the east, and Twenty-fourth on the west, within which the two largest power houses of the street railway company are centrally located, it is believad that this new and mysterious de struction of iron and lead pipe is aue to an unusually large amount of electric current in the ground in that vicinity. ¢ What the Samples Show. A number of samples of ruined pipo that had been under ground but short periods, ranging from eight months to a_year and a haf, are now mn the ofice of the Board of Public Works. The iron pipe scems to have had all its natural propertics taken out of it, where 1t has not been entirely destroyed Its edges flake off and can be crumbled to powder betwes the thumb and fis wh any of it can be whittled with AI\ i sily as roofing slate. 'he iron pipe is miore seriously affected n is the lead, the former being com ly disintegrated within a short time, ple! while'the lead pipe is affected only in spots. A piece of lead pipe that had been down but fourteen months presented the appearancs of a piece of honeycomb. with its successior of deep pits, in the bottom of each of whigh isa mealy deposit, the latest result of the action of the a; t of destruction. When ever these pitsare eaten completely through- the pipe the leak becomes apparent, aud the investigation of the repairing force leads to the detection of the cause. Instead of its being then necessary to merely put down a short section of new pipe to repair the break, as in the case of an ordinary leak, it is often found that the entire longth of service pipe is about destroyed and must be replaced, e repairs have become very ex- pensive, particularly in the immediate vicin- ity of the electric puwer houses on Nicholas street at Ninoteenth ana Twenty-secona streets, and in the hope of obtaining in- formation that will lead to an obviation of the difficulty the sewer commissioner has written to President Yost of the telephone company. General Manager Smith of the street railway company, City Elect Cowgill and prominent electricians in other cities, asking for the result of thew ob- servations in this respectand for suggestions as to the most effective remedy to avoid a continuance of the nuisance. The sewer commissioner states that for a long time he was disposed to think the trouble was solely due to an infevior quality of pipe, and was inclined to stic up the water and gas companies and tne plumbers for putting it down. but after aiscovering that the very best double extra lead pipe and the heaviest iron mains were alike ren- dered unfit for use after a few months of service, and noting that the trouble was con- ined to the district named he concluded that electricity must have a great deal to do with it. In this belief he was coufirmea by learning that the same trouble was being experienced in some other cities where elec- tricity was largely used in the operation of the street railway system. What Experts Say. In speaking of the electrolysis of under- ground pipes, City Electrician Cowgill said yesterdny thatit was bound to become a ery serious matter, in fact, much more so than most people had any idea of, and that it would demand a great deal of attention in the near future. “Iamnot ready to make any assertion regarding it,” he said, “tor I bave different views from mauy of the elec: tricians regarding the proper course to be pursued. 1t is my opiulon from what I kave noticed that the current escapes from the rails of the street railway tracks and goes to the pipes, which, imbedded in moist earth, offer it a botter path back to the powor house. It is my belief that it escapes the same all over the city, and the reason that the pipes are so' seriously affected near tho power houses and scarcely at all in the outlying portions of the city is that the current centializes or focuses in the pipes near the power houses as it returns there, and the pipes are therefore so much more densely charged with it there than elsewhere. 1donot think that anyof the power escapes ut the power house, thus, causing the wouble at that point, as tho escape is through the trolley and motor thence to the rail where the current is plied. i have been inclined to think sinco this the pipes offer such an inviting path 'that they are certain to become churged with it, that a good plan to overcome the bad effects of it would be to attach a copper wire to the that :scapo was bouna to oceur, and pipes, thus furnishing a hard and casily traveled d for its return to the dynamo to be again pumped over the cireuit. 1 know that a number of the best electricians do not agree with this, as the wire would be eaten off within a few moutns, and I do not assert that it 1s the proper course to pursue, but it has seemed to me that the attachment of such a wire would helv it, roplacinz then. whenever destroyed, as the curvent must bo taken away from the pipes if they are to be preserved. Unless it can be obviated in some way it is going to cost the telephone company thousands of dollars to keep its undérground eable service in working order. 1 am aware that ics cables are lud in cement-lned pipes, but it must be under- stood that there no such thing as a perfect insulstor. It 1s simply a degree of insulation, some materials bemg better msulators than others. Ilectricity will go through glass to a certain extent, al- though not nearly so readily as through some oth e material, and it is certain to at- tack cables sooner or later. It is my belief that current is constantly escaping through these ivon trolley wire poles, because of im. perfect insulation, for, although th have | been up buc a short vime, I have noticed that they are rusting near the grouud, yet the fire®hyarants do uot show the 3 thing, although they been in_ tho ground much L of the electric current seems to be having its ef- | fect on them and I am inclined to believe that the portion below the surf: o Lhe ground will be caten up within five or six years. ‘I'his is a condition that is known to exist, but its serious resulis are of such comparatively recent date thuat it has not yot received very much atcention.
