BONDS, Very Slight Change Characterized Speculation in the Active Lis New Yok, Jan. 17.—The changes in the active list as & result of today’s speculation on tho Stock exchange ore very slight in- deed and are gencrally on the bear side of the market, the groatest being 3¢ per ceut in Sugar preforred and Union Pacifie. Dull- ness prevailed all day and there wore periods of complete stagnation, What lite tlo business there was done was seliing and the commission houses report a dearth of busincss, Oceasional drives were made on the grangers, particularly St. Paul, in the carly dealings, when exaggeratod reports of the earnings for the second woek 1 January were circulated, the published statement showing later in the day u loss of £120,045, But it was impossible to depress prices materially on small offerings and the short interest did not scom to make any heavy plunges. There was no great demand for stocks and no special effort was made to establish a higher range of values in the general list, the only notable movement foing in tho'specialties, It was reporied that the appointments of Charles Parsons and Mr, Platias pormanent recewvers of New England were assured, and on purchases induced thereby tho stock rose 15 per cont. A reaction of b per cent fol- lowed, with a final rally of % “per cent. At the opening of busiuess the market was weak and prices a small fraction lower, but in the balf hour following a better tond pre- vailed and the losses were recovered, Man- hattan being an exception und declining 1 per cent. London selling of the arbitrage specialties started a downward movement in which the general list lost & fraction and Missouri, Kansas & Texas preferred 1l per_cent. Tovacco preferred had advanced 2 per cont. The depression continued until 11:80 o'clock, and further fractional declines took place genor- ally. WEDNESDAY, Jan. 17, So far this weels, compared with lust, thece has been a falling off of about 650 cattle, while hog receipts have increascd nearly 4,000 head and sheep’about 3,300 head. “There was no improyement worth mention- ing in the general cattle market. Trade was pevhaps a little hyelier, but about the only noticeable feature was that it was some- what easier to obtain Tuesday’s very mean prices. Thesupply was not atall excessive, but in the present condition of the market it was more than ample and enough to reliove buyers of any anxiety on the score of secur- ing enough cattic to fill their orders. In quality the offorings wore nothing to brag on. A fow head brought $.40, und very good 1255 1b, steers brou Fair to ve good 1,000 to 1,285 1b. steers, however, were practically confiued to a range of from £4.50 to $3.00, with,, faiv to poor stuff any where from that down to 8. Trading wis nov partieularly lively, but the cattle kept moving, and a vary respectable clearanco was fnally accomplished. The cow market has suffered the most lately, and was the first to feel a change for the better. The change was 30 slight, how- ever, that many salesmen failed to’ discover it. Receipts were fuirand the demand mod erate. Prices ruled steady to a trifle firmer ull around, sales including poor to choice cows uud heifers ats from §1.25 10 .25, with the bulk of the fairto good butchers’ stock at from $2.15 to &2.55. Calves at from #1 to £ were steady, andrough stock of all kinds was generally uncnanged, with sales of fair to good bulls, oxen and stags largely at from $2.80 to 8. ‘I'ho stockor and s feeder trade was devoid of new foatures, Thero wis a moderate amount of both fresh and stale stock on hand, and with no-urgent demand from any quarter trade was slow and the prices gen- lly quoted easior all around. Good to choice feedors are quoted at from & to $3.60; fair to wood ut from $2.70 to §, and hgh commoner grades at from $2.50 dowr. Rep- resentutive sales DIESSED BE!
