Rupoe papor s rlsen to 06d STOCKS AND Very Substantint and Well Disteibated Ad vance Was Scored, New Yonk, Nov. 24.—A very substantial and well distributed advance in prices is the ONDS, result of today's transactions on the Stock | exchange, and the grangers, coal stocks und inaustrials shared largely in the improve- ment. The leading industrials were weak and recorded a decline, the moving influence being mainly the proposed changes in tho tariff, which for sngar and metals are not considered favorabie to the home industries. Distilling sold for the purpose of shakimg out some weak holders, and General Elec- wic was heavy by reason of reports to the effect that the company’s trade prospects were not bright. ‘The depression in these stocks did not continue long, the buoyancy of the general market becoming infectious, sugar interests announcing their satistfaction with the pro- posed duty and the General Blectric people denying that there is anything adverse to the company. Inview of these facts the sellers of the early morning became buyers aunda rapid appreciation followed. Sub- sequently another reaction set in which was brief. The upward movement was re- sumed and continued with but little inter- ruption to the close, when compared with vesterday's sules, prices had advanced 3 per cent- in’ Rubber, 23¢ per cent in General Electric, 1% per cent Cotton Oil, L per cent Sugar perferred and Cordage und Chicago Gas Y per cent, Distilling declined from 31 to d out recovered to #0';. Sugar common receded 115 por cent in the dealings, adyanced 115 per cent, reacted 17 per cent, rallied 11, per cent and reacted 4 per cent, closing 'y higher than last night. The Post sny The market for the first half of this month, when the repeal dis- ussion had been at last completed, was made up of a succession of quick reactions, ach of them followed by a recovory, bring- ing pri back again to a level slightly pelow thatat which the downward move- ment started. The netresult was a slow decline. Apparently the movement of No- vember's second half has been preciseiy the veverse. This week the murket has dis- played a succession of advances, and each has been in turn followed by a reaction unaer which prices remained slightly above the line at which tie advance began. The result of this month's later operations has hence been favorable and it 1s not im- probabla that excluding some stocks espe- cially affected —such as the chief industrials ~November's movement as a whole will prove to have made substantially no change. The immediate influence of the tariff bill re- mains to be discovered. London started today’s advance. 1t was a purely specuiative movement, doubtless of no great signiticance or of sufficient force to start off local prices with ¢ derable gains, T'he following are the closing quotations of the leading stocks on the New York ex- change tod 203 Northern Pi 145 | do pretd |U.
