Quict and un- STOCKS AND BONDS, Securitles Were Strong in the Atternoon and Closed Firm, New Yomrg, Nov. 10.—The net results of trading on the Stock exchange today were inconsequential, barely a dozen stocks show- ing a chauge of over1 per cent compared with the closing sales of yesterday. New England was affected very unfavorably by the publication of a story to the effect that a fight had been begun by the opponents of its scheme to gain entrance to New York, and the first move was a notice served upon it that on November 19 the special New England train service over the New York, New Haven & Hartford road would be dis- continued. This veport induced heavy sales at the opening of business, under which the stock dropped 3§ per cent. An explanation that the proposed discontinuance of the special service from the Grand Central devot was of no consequence, caused a shght recovery. The shares of New England did not, however, rally materially and closed heavy at a decline on the dayeof 3 per cent. A decrease of $64,826 in the earnings for the St. Paul road for the first week in Octover was made the point of a sharp bear drive in the shaves, which sent them down 11 per cent, the close bemng at a recovery of 1] per cent. Sugar was strong in the early dealings, but subsequently gave way under sales induced by the demor ation of the Sugar market. The lower rango of prices brought in good buyers and u recovery was made, the closing sales being 135 per cent above the lowest of the day. Chicago Gas was o trifle unsteady during the morning on the reported granting of a franchise 1o a competing gas company, but y strong support from the inner circle and advanced 2! per cent on the day. Nutional Cordage preferred rose 217 per'cent on a purchase of 100 shares, The general market was barely steady in the morning, but became strong with an ad- vance of from !4 to !y per cent from the lowest point touched. The Post say Prices are not dispos:a to move at all under existing circumstances and they followed this disposition faithfu'ly today. Dulluess being in order and outsiders doing nothing, the speculative market wou d usually continue to decline, for buyers on a margin have to pay to carry stocks while ionai sellers of stocks pay nothing. | money is now so cheap as to offsct this murket advantage and securities do not s3cm to press upon the market. Doubt as to the nature of the tarviff bill is obviously hold- ing buck buyers from the mavicer, but it is not as yet rate attracting sellers, Of today's special market movements the most noteworthy were in New England and St. Paul. The “second mortgage bonNs of these companies were sold by traders on the §04,820 decrease in gross earnings for the first week in November, Whether these students of the market ex- pected the increase of the World's fair October passcuger trafic to continue in- definitely may be doubtful. Observers of the genc situation will still do well to keep in view the changes m treasury ances. 1t hus already been peinted out in how remarkable a .degree the treasury returns reflect nd foreshadow move- ments in national vrade, It was the decr in the government's general balance which foretold, far in advance, the spring collapse of busiucss. 1t was the fall in the gold reserve which pointed out the iater hoarding of private funds. The rise in this reserve during the month of August was a sure index of returning con- fidence in the monetary outlook, and the still wore recent shrinkage in the total bal- ance reflected quite us tenly as the clearing house exchange and the railway earnings the trade stagnation caused by the senate's long obstruction, With all these changes keptin mind, the treasury's mwore recent statements huve not been uncomprowising.
