NORTH OMMH BEWER. Work Belng Donema the Big Diteh Drain. Ing thefNorth Lands. One of the most: complete and perfect feats of engineoring is being carried on in this city at the present time, and is the work of City Fngimeer Andrew Rosewater. It is the construesion of the big North Omaha sewer, and will drain at least 8,500 acres of land that but a few years ago was & vast marsh. The sower was planned nearly two years ago, and last year 1,800 fectof the same was constructed. It runs from the large tavine that empties into Florence lake, east of the fort, to the creek near Thirty- socond and Sprague streets. The sewer is an eight foot three inch one clear, and is what is known as & three ring sewer, with walls fourteen inches in thickness. In its construction are used 25,000 brick daily. Before the construction of the sewer was commonced a large ditch was Gug costing $20,000, to properly drain that section of ‘the city, and to reneve the Omaha mair, sewer, the capacity of which was un- equal to the flow and especially during a heavy fall of rain, City Engineer Rosewater conceived theidea of the big sewer, which is the largest over built in Nebraska. Work on this was commenced last yearand, as previously stated, about 1,800 feet was built under the first contract. Last spl'ln§ a now contract was entered into with Me- Donald & Penflold of Fremont, at a cost of $10.25 per foot. This price was considered very low and fell below the other bids nearly $5,000 on the job, Work was commenced and the sewer has been put in at the rate of about fifty feet oachday, giving employment to a large force of men. Previous to the award of the con- tract the council set aside £50,000 for this year's work, and also whatever sums re- main unexpended in the main sewer fund At the present time the contractors have in between 4.500 and 5,000 fect of sewer, bring- ing it down Twenty-seventh strect, from north of the fort to Sprague street. From Sprague street the sewer goes west to near Thirty-second, where it connects with the creek at that point. Connecting with this sower from the south in the creek will be one from Thirtieth street. The sewer when completed will be nearly two miles in length. The appropriation this year will not cover the costof its entire construction and 1t will not be finished until next year, after the bonds are sold, which it is proposed to vote at vhe coming election. ‘With the amount on hand it will be possible to build nearly one-half a mile more this year, which will make nearly one and one- half miles of the sewer constructed this year. When the sewer iscompleted it will ive to that portion of the city through h it passes complete drainage, and its ss will solve engineering problem that has perplexed city engineers for years and required the genius of Andrew Rose- water to work out.
