In Some Lines— & House Reports. New York, Oct. 20.—R. G. Dun & Co.'s weekly review of trade says: Thero has been much gain in hope and o little in busi ness, Assurances that the repeal bill will soon be passed have again been accepred by traders as renson for buying things specula- tive at higher prices, and with movey abund- ant on call, $85,000,000 having been received in this city within ten weeks, speculation in stocks and products has an unusual stimu- lus, and would have expanded even more but for continued embarrassment of industries. Wheat has risen one-fourth of a cent, helped by heavy foreign purchases, and in spite of better crop prospects, corn is noth- ing stronger. Pork has been lifted so far tnat another collapse is feared by some; pe- troleumn has been advanced 1 cent and Brazil speculators are supposed to be utilizing bom- bardments to icrease the value of coffee. With these good sigus there aro some not so good. Renewals of maturing notes to a lavge extent are forced upon the banks here, though practically all the clearing house cer- tificates have been retired here and ton. Business is so slow that me asking for foew new loans and yet th gate of commercial 1ndebtedn large. The shrinkage ton than some other branches of manufac- ture and durlng the week there has been some slight improvement in the market for some goods. But some lurge mills, which recently resumed, have stopped again, and while the number reported 1 operation in- creases.the condition of the market ndi- cates plainly that few are working at their full capacity. The reduction of wages has been general and does not tend to increase the consumption of goods. The starting of the Edgar-Thompson works for two woeks, the announcement that the Joliet Steel works will s00n startare move hopefulsigus, and the ship yards and agricultural implement makers are increasing their purchases, but the demand for building purposes is remark- ably small, and there is more weakn in barved wire, rods and steel billeis. ‘The failures this week number 46 in the United, States agamst 210 last year, and twenty-nine in Canada agalnst twenty-fiv last year, The list includes onc large bank at Providence and three southern banks, but the number of other failures having large liabilities is somewhat less than usual For the previous week the full statement of Liabilities is &5, 3 against §,491,202 for the preceding wee aggre- Lill be ppears less in cot- waLL REEL FOR A WEEK. Dull and Professional Was the Character of the Trading. NEw Youk, Oct. 20.—Bradstrect's Wall street raview tomorrow will say: Expecta- tions of a_compromise on the silver repeal bill, or of the amendment of the scnate rules, seemed to be regarded as sustaining influences in the week's speculation. The market throughout showed a much stronger tendency to respond to such factors than to give way - under the pressure of the long delay in the senate. Prices declined rather sharply at the ploseé last weck when the con- tinuous session was_abandoned, but this movement proved to be only temporary, a rally ensuiug as soon as it becime apparent thal the repeal forces were practically unbroken, The trading at ouce became dull and. professional, und fluc- tuations were confined to narrow iimits, al- though interests which have been well in- formed as to the outlook at Washington ox- { tended support to their specialties and af- forded further effcctive resistance to the natural tendency of the board room traders to mark prices down. At the sume time the short interest remained so large that the slightest increase in its_dimensions seemed to produce quick, though brief, rallieson any favorable rumors from the national capital. Ou Friday the market responded to the tangible expectation of a compromise on re- peal by a general-upward movement of prices, the market closing, In spite of tho prospect of some further delay, at the best figures of the weel. B IADSTREET'S REVIEW OF TRADE. Another Dull Week Keported In the World of Business. New York, Oct. 20.—Bradstrect's tomor- row will sa Still another business week is rendered conspicuous owing to the paraly- imposed on commel and industrial operations by the revolutionary policy of the minority in the senate, Large ropresenta- tive manufacturers, jobbers and other whole- salers in leading lines have been unable to operate with reference to the future supply ordemand and the reason is that the greut iron and steel industries remain practically on their backs, with no signs of a rovial in cither demand or price. In ironalone there s probably not more than one-thid the output of a year ago; wool is being sold at conces- slons from quotations, and mili owners are taking raw material for actual needs only; textile industries generally ave not finding the better demand expecied at this tune leather industries continue much depressod ; clothing manufacturers make unfavorabie reports on business thus far this fall, and, at somo industrial centers, notably Paterson, N. J., u home of silk and iron factories and wills, the industrial situation has advanced steadily from bad to worse, and the end is not yet.
