New York was strong and foreigners were buying whos York. The ehorts did some covering naturally, but th advance brought out rather large offerings and theve was fai selling by some partics. Corn began quite strong, prices advancing from f¢c 1o tge. Liverpool advices indicated consulorable strength. The Washington advices were watched very closely on the exchange today and were construed as surely indicating that the dead- lock was about to be brought to an end, and unconditnally. Under the cheerfut influ- ences a healthier tone was imparted to the speculation than it has experienced in sev- eral weeks. The buying was not confined o any one or two sets of stocks, but was well distributed throughout the list. The wmar- ket, oo, moved more in unison than of late, and in the upward movement there were few laggards. Shortly after the openin; higher fizures, that Silver Repea which some sclling orders were encomntered that had the effect of check- ing the advancing tendency. In the late dealings, efforts to realize unsettled the market somewhat, but the tone at the close was tirmer, com- pared with the final sales of yesterday, the closing figures showing an advance in the general list ranging from !4 to 8! per cent, the latter in Michigan Central, in Manhattan Consolidated, 214 per cent in Edison Electric and 2!¢ per cent in Lacka- wanna & Western.
