HE SYASHED ALL RECORDS William Vinoont Allen of Madison Now Holds the Long Distance Talking Belt, SCENES DURING HIS WONDERFUL SPEECH Senators Who Sought to Eutrap the Janior from Nebraska and How ‘They Fared —Woleott's Ludicrous Biander - Comments ot Repeal Fapers. The performance of Senator Allen of Ne braska is cousiderad the most remarkable in the history of the senate. Previous to this, writes the correspondent of the Globe-Demo at, Senator Faulkner was the rocord- breaker, le having held the floor for thir teen hours duriug the long debate on the force bill. The conditions then wers en- tirely different. Iully two-thirds of Mr. Faulkner's time was spent in his seat rest- ing while efforts were belng made to socure #quorum. Betore that time the longest speech within the recollection of senators was about ten hours duration, and was ac- liverod by Garrett Davis of Kentucky dur- ing the recoustruction period. Mr. Allen took tho floor at 5:15 in the afternoon, and with- out any interrupgions, except such as were purely accidental, ho had the tioor all night. He proved himself an able and indefutigable talker. At no time did his voice fail him, and oven when the clerk was calling the roll to secure a quorum he stood erect and ready to proceed with his remarks. Not for one moment did he falter; not for one moment did he lose his soli-possession; uot for one moment did he show that ho was talking against time. Clad in a park suit, his collar being adorned with a black tie. in tho op- presaive atmosphere of the senate he did not weaken for an instant, but with great vigor clucidated his financial views. Ho con- oluded his speech on the stroke of § o'cloc having thus been on the floor for fourtcen and three-quarter hours, During that time he occasionally sipped from a cup of ¢ this was his ouly nourishment. When he finished his eyes were as clear and bis voic was a8 strone and his gestures were as vig- | orous as when he took the floor. His respites were fow, and when he sent to the clerk to liave read certain excerpts: but even then he remained upon his feet, without the slightest evidence of fatiguo.
