A MEETING TWENTY-NINE YEARS AFTER Attitudes of Battlofield Corps: that Played Liself Out-Military Assign- meuts White Elephant Prizos Other Aty Tneidents. When the Washi at Morgan City on the there were many striking incidents that sprung out of the covemonies of cating ort Star and of the solid shot. n artiller Fourth of July was dedi- practising with The whole day the war and its memories were kept before tho people, but it was not a reawnkening in which the bloody shirt had any play, but ore of a thoughtful retrospection. in which the recalling of battles was nc with bitterness but with an impartial sadness, Among all the happenings of the day none were more singular and noteworthy than one which occurred to Colonel Richardson, the commander of the battalion. It was during the time when the batteries were firing shell at the two targets, which looked like tiny handker- chiefs on the water, they were so far away. A good shot was fired, and the spectators wore applauding the excel- lent marksmanship, and the colonel stepped uo to the gun to commend the gunner, when, without cause or without knowing why, the memory of a similar shot which had been fired twenty-nine years ago, almost to the very day, flashed into his mind, when he had stepped up toa gunner and complimented him in much the same style It was when ho was in the siege of Petorsburg, which was known as Fort “‘Damnation” when the shot twenty-nino years before had been fired, and the Fourth of July was almost the anniversary of tho very day. In- stead of white targets for a mark it had been the tops of two Sibley tents, which peeped over the ramparts of Fort *Hell,” Jjust oppos ‘ort **‘Damnation.” They were the tents of the federal ofti He knew that from a deserter who had informed him, also that the officers of the whole command held a daily ¢on- sultation there, and that he conld tell the time from the fact thatthey hitched their horses around the tents. Colonel Richardson was then a captain in the Washington artillery, and he conceived the idea of scoring a point on the feder- als by firing on the tents just at the time of the daily consultation. He se- lected the best gunner in his command and told him what he wanted him to do, and that was to load and prepare the guns for a special shot which he was going to make the ensuing day. The young captain was sure that he had frunners he could depend upon, and to make his triumph complete hegasked General Malone to be present when the shots were to be fired. It was noon the next day when horses of the federal officers were collected around the two tents. gunners were told to train their guns upon them and to be cortain to make their shots tell. Those two shots were made the center of interest of those in Fort **Damnation” for that day, for the word was pussed avound shat the de- struction of the officers’ tents was to be attempted. After a deal of preliminary arrange- ments the two shots were fired and the tops of the two Sibley tents disappeared like card houses in a gale of wind. The success of the shots was the signal for cheering on the part of the confederates. General Malone ¢ ymplimented the ac- curacy of the artillerymen, and it was then that the captain Stepped to the gun- ner and expressed his approbation in much the same way that he used to the one that had made the goed shot at Morgan City. But there had always been a tinge of dissatisfaction about thiut shot at the federal tents, and that was that he had never ascertained whether any one had been hurt in the tents, and for the twenty-nine intervening years that one thought hud pervaded the whole incident. With these thoughts Colonel Richardson turned away from the gunner at Morgan City, and at that moment one of Morgan City’s prominent citizens, Mr. Gray, stepped to the colonel’s side and said: “Isn't this Colonel Richardson?” Yo, “Well, T have been wanting to meet you for many years, ever since I heard that you had been in Fort ‘Damnation’ at tho same time that I was in Fort ‘Hell.! “Yes?" said the (‘olnxu-l were you in Fort ‘Hell.! “In” July, 1864; in_fact, nine years ago today,” Gray. The colonel instantly thought of those two shots, and wondered if his curiosit; was 10 be satisfied. Do you remember a day while you were Fort *Hell’ when the tents of the officers were taken down by two nhntu which were almost simultancous?” The stranger did not n,]nl) for a full minute. A shadow seemed to tall over him, his eyes grew dark, and he stepped back and surveyed the e Slonel from head to foot. Then he broke out feelingly: “Denyoul 1 shall never forget those shots. They swept away the flower of my corps, My fiest lieatenant was killed, and the leg of my second licu- tenant was shot off and five others were killed. And did you fire that shot?” The deep feoling of the man was evi- dent, buta moment later hesaid: “Well, colonel, you are now teaching your yourg soldiers to serve the flag fo Which my officers laid down tneir live Itis Kismet. Let us take a drink.” Battlefiold Eccontricities, “Doctor, I wanta certificate of dis- ability.” “Why, what for? and well.” Yes, sir, but [ got a bullet today,” “Where?" asked the doctor, u)cmg him. *“Letme see the wound at once,” Henvy drew @ little back from the cager hands that were going all over him, and stammered out, **Well, doctor, that air bullet, now—well, sir, | swallowed it!? The surgeons comments gave him no leisure to hear the expla- nution that the ball had slipped down his throat while he was chewing it, and dodging from a shell, Riding down & Virginia road with the mud nearly to the hovses' knees, four o five confeds met as many union soldiers, the latter riding in advance of a regi ment about an eighth of u mile buck. The Johnny Rebs at first showed fight, but catching sight of the glittering bayonets just turning into the road thought discretion the bet part of valor and firing & hasty volley at the enemy, turned and fled as quickly as the all embracing mud would allow. All had succeeded in getting out of range except one, who had outdistanced his pursuers save Lientenant Lockhurd, who went plunging after him, his revolver spitting like a cat. Presently the gal- lant lieutenant got into a bog hole, how- ever, and seeing his quarry about to scape shouted to him in his excitement, "liuld on, I say! Hold on till I shoot Ifort Malone at the seen The in his mind “und when just twenty- unswered M. TWar's Vietime on the Fleid, In the cornfleld, along the sunken road at Antlotam, Dr. Brinton, says the Popular Sclence Monthly, saw a cont foderate corpse, somi-oroot, the ground, one kneo against a bank of earth and one arm stretelied forward on a low breastwork. His musket, with rammer iu, lay on the ground, and tha appearances indicated that he had been killed whilo rising to load and fire. Ha was shot through the centor of the fores head. In the tield adjoining were nearly forty dead confederates, some with their arms vigidly in_ the_air, some with lege drawn and fixed, and many with trunks drawn and fixed. The |n-~l(|un- wera not those of the relaxation of death, bus were due to “final museular action at the last moment of life, in the spasms of muscles set and remained rigid.” The wounds were chiefly in tha chest, though some were in the head and abdomen. The doctor’s observations were mado thirty-six hows after deaths Another Antictam case included in Dr, Brinton's list, but reported by Surgeon Thomas B. Read, was the corpse of a union soldier with his right avm raised above his head and rigidly fixed, his hand still holding the cap with which he had been eheoring his omrades.. Asido from the desperate naturo of the fighting at Antictam, the ~\hm\\un wad espocially favorable to these phenomens, particnlarly on the confederate side, They had fought in nine battles and engagements within one month, besides marching over 200 miles. The troops engaged in portions of the tield under consideration had fought at South Mouatain two days before ~Septeraber —had been alert all night on the L4th, I15th and 16th, marching, counte marching and skirmishing constantly, and were run down physically from hunger and general exhaustion. . They had subsisted for several days wpon green corn and apples, and had been one month on half vations of meal and bacon. The day—September 17—was about liko sultry August weather in the north, close and lowoery in the morning, followed by a barning sun. The night of battle was sweltering hot on the fleld. These circumstances may have o part in the development of instantancous: rigor. A Dl Flend. The bump of fun is an exceedingly large one in the averago soldicr of the line. A stovy is told in the army (a sort of unwritten legend) that there was once a commanding officer at a frontior military post who was a perfect fiend for drills, but as he one of those carly birds who got up before the sun and wanted overybody to do Jikewise heme was formed to get out of the drills, ~ Now, the C. O. had breakfast at 4 o'clock a. m. and drill call was sounded half an hour later, but as he always had a holy horror of getting " s feet wet from either dew or rain drills were always™ suspended on such occasions. He would come out of his quarters before light, step down on the lawn and move his foot industriously about to sec the condition of the grass If the polish was moistened from his boots an orderly was straightway dispatehed to sound re- call: if dry and somfortable, drill was sounded as usual. The boys finally *‘got on 0" this weakness, and every morn- ing for a month some of them would come along about 3 o'clock a. m. with watering pot and thoroughly saturate the lawn in front of the colonel's quar- ters. The colonel would come out fegu- larly at 4, experiment with his foot, find t]m ground wet, and, of course, thero vas no drill. - But it happencd to be a n-mmknhl\ dry month in reality, and the old gentleman could not for the life of him understand why dampness should prevail during such dry weather. He “smelt a mice” after a while, and watch- ing one morning from a druped window discovered the culprits in the act, and in consequence every mother'’s son of them was lodged in the guard house. Thereafter drills were held four times a day instead of once, Mixing Military Mattors, “I hereby detail the following officers of the United States army to act as In- dian agents at that agency sct opposite their respective names,” is the intro- duetory paragraph to an order signed “Grover Cleveland, and then follow the names of two majors and eighteen cap- tains and the agencies to which they aro assigned. Whether these officers are pleased or not, they have not felt at liberty to say, but there has been a gens eral feeling among ofticers that no valu- able officer in the army would choose such a detail if the matter were loft to him, and there was a general wish that the president would deem it wise to keep things unlike (civil and military) separate. The detail takes the officérs- away from the proper field for which they haye been educated; it isolates them from their comrades in the army; it put puts each one in a place where hia dislikes to bring his family, if he has one. Another view taken is that if avmy officers must be detailed as Indian arents, should they reccive an extra allowance, the same as is paid to the officer detailed as engineer commissioner of the District of Columbia? Another suggestion has beon mado that the prosident should closely scrutinizo the roll of retived officers, and select those who may be physically and mentally able to perform the duties of upright Indian agents, and vut them on active duty pay as Indian agent; but that the arrly itself should be kept out of politi- cal, commoreial and military cavils that surround an Indian agency, unless the whole business is taken from the In- terior department and lodged with the ‘War department. Booby Solalers, One day in the heat of battic a little gunner of battery A backed his piece up against a tree and before I could stop him had fired it. There was a small carthquuke, the caisson and trce were torn asunder, and the artillery man was knocked twenty feet awuy. fle sat up with tears in his eyes thab sent the gun- powder running down his checks in black streams and ked nul«-mnly “Didn’t something strike me then? John Nixon wasa great overgrown boy whose laziness, except in the fiold, where there was no brav soldier, was proverbial in the regiment to wh ch he belonged. Ho was one day ordered on picket duty. “Can't you' excuso me today, sir?” he whin “I'm sick today.” The ofticer, who was acquainted w th John's failing, laughed and said, “Now, John, where or how are you sick?” The big strapping fellow, who had never known u day’s 1llness in his Tife, hesitated and cast his eye along his huge, muscular hudy and then groanca, U've @ pain my misery, sir. But he went on duty just the same. The fortunes of war carried us close to Henry Jacob's home and he promptly put in an application for leave to go and see his family, but the enemy was ad- vancing to attack us with thiee times our force and, every man counting, this permission was refused until after the engagement. We had chosen our position near & spring, but this gave out curly in the day and the men were forced to that old expedient for allaying thirst—chewing & bullet. That night Henry turned up ut the house to which the wounded had been carried and de- manded to see the surgeon. That gentleman came hurrylng out. “Now, then, my mey, what 1s it? - Quick!” one foot on 12 o <« L] /
