My 19-21-20-25-27-20-51% HAS NOTIING TO RETRACT, Comptroiler Eckels Sticka to What He Said About Western Boom Townn, PORTLAND, Ore,, July 22,—1In response to a telegraphic query from the editor of the Pacific Banker and Investor-of this city the following was received from Comptrollef of ~the Currency Eckols: Tam in receipt of your telegram of yester- day. At New York 1 said: “Disasters have fallen upon speculative institutions in the boom cities of Washington, Colorado, Kansas and Missouri, which have injured solvent ones.” 1do not see that any explanation of that language is necossary, There is no reflec- tion upon the state us 4 state, or upon_ any institution, or any city oxcept'such us havo been known and ookeéd upon as a city where speculation was rife. Chere is no one but that believes thav a great many of the finan- cial institutions of the states named are ab- solutely solvent. On the other hand, no one will deny that in recent years speculation has been carrica on in certiin localities to a degree not warranted by the popuiation. - It Justas well to be pilosophical and to state honestly the cause of the depression, andnot to grow excited without having reasons tkorefor. — Stoppod Preacning to Save Lives, CHICAGO, July 22.—Th Methodist meeting at the Desplaines eamp meet- ing ground was yesterday afternoon the seene of 4 most exciting occurence, Two or three thousand people were attending divine servicos when two boys an- nouneed llml\\\.:ulvn)mnl been drowned in the river. Rev. 5. Colby of the Crawford Methodist el ||Ill'l h of this city was the first to go to the rescue. Meny times he dived for the bodies, and after half an hour came in ¢ ntact with them clasped eclosely together. For fully twenty minutes the preacher wrestled with the bodies at intervals. Finally, with the assistunce of two other men, the bodies were brought up. The re- mains have not been identifiod. Expeet & Prolunged Sirike, LONDON, July 22.—A prolonged strike the British coal miners now seems inevitable: The deputation from the Miners federation appointed at yester- day's conference at Birminghalu met representatives of the Mine Ownoers as- sociation here toduy. Benjamin Pick- ard, member of parliament for a York- shire division and vice president of the Miners National union, spoke to the mit Ho refused to aeeopt one penny decrease in wages or to submit the ques- tion to arbiwation. The chairman of the Mine Owners association said he re- gretted the attitude of the men and as- sured the deputation that the offer to arbitrate was still open. e ap to Kuccesd Stanford, SAN FraNCi1sco, July A local paper says that Governor Markham has decided to appoint Irwin G. LEWIS ON THE NEW CURRICULUM New Conrse of Are ber tudy and the Henefits That 0 Result—Large Nam« New Students to Next Ter eoted of Enter The Omaha High school is rapidly assume ing the proportions of a good sized college, With the opening of school on the first weok in September next it is anticipated that 1,000 young people will gather there for enrolle ment in the classes. Last year the total ens rollment was 880 and the indications point to an increase of at least 120 more the coms ing year. An important change has recently been of- fected in the arrangement of the different courses in the High school that will doubt- 088 Prove to bo advantageous to the pupils. Speaking of tho school Friday = Prof. Homer 1. Lewis, the principal, said “L70r some years there has ‘been a good deal of criticism of the High schools and some of the colleges of the country on aos count of the fact that not enough of attens tion was given to English. The dead and foreign languages were receiving more at- tention than the language in - which we as Lnglish speaking people should bo the mosy proficient. Along this line we have made what I consider an ad- vantageous change in the High school course, It has been arranged so that the study of English runs all the way through the four courses of study to the closo. “English grammar aad analysis are fol- lowed by studies in rhetoric and literature which go hand in hand. Our method of teaching rhetorie is, in tho main, to make a rhetorical study of the works on lterature as they are taken up rather than to take up distinetive text books on rhetoric. ‘Then we have con- consolidated or ratner mado electiy various language courses. The Latin, I and German all belong, practically, to one course now. Pupils may make a choico of any one of these three languages in taking this course. It is not necessary for them to take more than one, but they make two or even all of them if they so elect. In this way we have mado the vourse more floxible. Av arrangement has also been provided by which pupils may be graduated by taking a n number of studics suited especiall, pare them for specitic lines of work.' igh School at. With reference to the proportion of pupils that attend the High school, as comparod with the enrollment in the lower grades, Prof. Lowis said: Tt has frequently been asscrted by people who were probably mis- informed, that the Omaha High school did not compare favorably in provortionate en- rollment with the High schools of other cities of similar size. 1 have always doubted tho accuracy of such statements and I am now coabled to prove that an, disparaging statement of that kin with regard to the Omaha High school is absolutely “without foundation. I have written o twenty diffcrent cities for statistics showing the total population of school age in each city and the total envolls ment in the graded and high schools of each, “Taking the figures showing o comparison of the total enrollments and the high school on- rollments and the figures showing the total population of school age and the high school eurollments 1 find that the Omaha high school stands third from the top in one instanco and fourth from . the top in the other in this list of twenty cities. In_addition to_ this some of the cities that make a better show- ing than Omaha admit their graded puplls into the High school f-om the seventh grade, whereas we admit_them from the eiehth grade. That would make quite a difference in our fayor if the facts could be fully ascer- tained. Absurdity It has also been falling-off in the atte High xploded. asserted that the dance of boys at the school was proportionately greater than in the lower grades. To show you the absurdity of that statement I huve but to say that of the class which graduated from the High school the past year 28 per cent of the num- ber were boys when the class entered the High school, and when the class graduated, 83 per cent of the mumber were bo; In nearly every city itis found thav tho falling off or mortality as it is often called in sses as_they advance from the lower to the High school is more among the boys than among the Thatis,a larger proportion of the drop out after about the fifth year than of the girls, becuuse the boys. as u rule, are able to assist in making a living for them- selves and other members of the families to which they belong, and they are often taken from school as & matter of necessity, while the girls are permitted to continue bocause they are of but little assistanco at home as wage earners until a later period. Viewing the matter from that standpoint I think the Omaha High school makes an excellent showin Touching the facilities old High school building said: “The present High school building will really furnish adequato facilitics for only about 700 pupils but we zhall try to take care of at least 850 pupils in the build- ing the coming year, Indeed, wo may be obliged to accommodate 1,000, but there is a plan in contemplation which if out will reliecve the Dbuild ing somewhat and cut the number down to about 850. 1 have recommended to the committee on High school that it would be isable to furnish accommodations el for the commercinl department and pupils who have butone or two of their studics outside of the commercial de- partment. If this can be done the present building will afford very comfortable facili- ties for the High school, butif ivis not we shall be very badly crowded.” ——— They Have n Little Surplas, WASHINGTON, July 22.--The oflicial statement of national banks in New York eity at the elose of business July 2, based on reports furnished the comp- troller of the currency in response to a call made by him, was completed this afternoon. [t shows that the reserve held by the banks was 25 30-100 per cent, or only 30-100 more than the law required. Notwithstanding this appar- ently slight surplus over the amount to be held in reserve as required by law, Comptroller Eekels states that the New York city banks are in excellent condi- tion and show a remarkable firmness idering the extraordinary demands that have been made on them. * R Mo's Aping John Sher HINGTON, July 22 Post says: The refusal of Mr. Preston, acting director of the mint, to buy silver except at the market price, and the wrath of 5o good & republican as Senator Teller have awakened an interesting memory, Mr, Preston's action is practically s leaf copied from the book of “John Sherman, In 1578 Sceretary Sherman offered the Nevada men the London price, loss the cost of tran: portation, — Niearaguis Canal Plans.
