8 e —— CONMERCIAL AND FISANCIAL Wheat Reacted Nearly Two Oents to the Burprise of the Trade, SOME OF THE FACTORS IN THE DEAL There Was Good Buying with Little Bale and Prices Quickly Tarne: dent Hesitation on the Part of Sollers, on Just as the talent had a8 a sale for another decline, 1t reacted today nearly 2¢ per bu,, nd= vaneing from to 67%c for July. The poor condition of the French wheat crop, the estimuto that Ttaly will have tolmport 24, 000,000 bu. and reports from the northwest that hot winds are destroying the previous good prospects for spring wheat cr a bull fsh sentiment which refused to be downed by reported troubles of western banks. The fnformation rning the jeopardy of the spring wheat crop was the cruclesteut of all. The pauncen for short reports in Europe and 100,000,000 bu. shortage in the winter crop here, were supposed by the bears to be in process of growth In the great north- west and with that resource becoming small by degrees, they were reaching out today with Voth hands for their short wheat, Cash wheat s0ld on June 7 at 2ic under July and today the difference was narrowed from e to 1. This was polnted out as proof of the improve- mentin the loeal financial situation. At the close July was hack to from 66%¢ to 64Xc, or from %c to 3¢ galn since yesterday. 2 The opening in wheat was woak at ' de- cline on easier enliles and rumors of_some ad- ditional bank failures elsewhere, There was good buying with little on_salo and prices quickly turned. There was evident hesitation on tho part of sellers A privite cable giving what purported to be the substance of a French wheat crop report from the London Times showed the condition of the French winter wheat crop to range from 40 to 71 per cent and spring from 25 (0 72 per cent. The area of winter wheat was given aboilt the same as lust year, hut the aros of spring was 20 percent fess. ' For a time this report had a dectdedly stro .gthening influcnce and prices’ mude quite o bul noticed it had little or 1o « markets and on fnquiry its genuine doubted. A later investigation led to the be- it wasold news rehashed from tho T £ June 8, and sinee discredited. rket lost some of the bulge. Tho Targest deerease in the visiblo supply helped 1o firm the market some. The market at tho opening was fro 10 Ly 1 the closing figures y, then advanc from 13c to 1%¢, cased off slightly and the close wits about 4 higher than yesterduy. Thore wis rustling and hustling wmong the corn shorts todny. The scramble did not art for about fiffeen minutes after the open- ing, but when ftdid begin there w long continuance of it. Opening trades were at from }c to 1 iine, but a better demand was soon developed and the price was ad- vanced Ye, tho statement of 30,000 bu. de- crease in'the visible supply and continued talk of ~ smalle movements having gome influence, Then the lots for tomorrow came in at 275, which resulted in a sl further gain of 13c. Prices later receded 3¢ from realizing ruled steady and at the elose were from e 13ic higher than yesterday. A good cash de- mand was reported and’ this also added strength to the speculative market, On tho other hand the Towa bulletin reporting the crop well cultivat and the weather map showed general heat o conditions all over the middle Today's arrivals exceeded Juie, but the out Inspection was CRICAGO, Tune 13 concluded that wheat ar re was a fair trade in onts and & strong g, due to sympathy with wheat andcor noderate offerings and to fair purchases ¢ neur futures, und prices advanced from 3ic to %e and September e, and closed steady at about thetop. The visible supply statc ment was !IHIHJ\. The provision market was firm, but still Incked nnimation in the speculative trading. The reccipts of hogs numbered only 12,000 hend and the shipinents of teats i the past twenty-four hours amounted to the heavy total of over 2,600,000 Ibs. They Create Torror in a Kentucky Village, bat No Lives Lost. DANVILLE, Ky., June 13.—James, Jeff, Nathan and Hardwick Belden, four des- perate characters, created a panic at Shelby City, four miles south of here, yesterday afternoon and narrowly escaped with their lives. They drove through town in two buggies and on their' first trip went at a terrific rate, shouting and shooting their pistols into the houses of the eitizens, They went from there to Junction City. Returning to Sheiby City, they resumed their bad be- havior and the marshal attempted to halt them, but they ran over him. He jumped up and shot at the buggics five time 'hey continued through the town, keeping up their shooting, and a number of citizens along the street r turned the fire. On their first trip they fired into the yard of W Grubbs, and he awaited their return with a shotgun loaded with buckshot. ‘When the fivst buggy reached his house on the return trip he raised his gun and ordered a halt, but instead of halting one of the men shot at Mr. Grubbs at short range, missing him, but coming very near killing his little son, Grubbs then discharged both barrels of his gun at the toughs. The men escaped, but it is thought that one or two of them were injured. They are painters and have recently worked in Louisville, where their father now resides. e COULDN’T FIND HIS FARM. A Chicago Man Enys West Virginla Land Which Does Not £xis CHICAGO, June 13.—James A. Bergen and Horace McKay were arraigned ve- fore Justice Scully yesterday, charged with conspiracy and forgery. Mr. Wheeler, who caused their arrest, alleges that they were instrumental in defrauding him out of 6,000 worth of veal estate. He stated that he met the two men in September, 1892, and that he consummated a deal with them in which he traded three houses and lots in Kansas City for a tract of land consisting of 2,400 acres in West Virginia. A short timo after the ex- change Mr, Wheeler went to West Vir- ginia to look after his property, but was unable to locate it. He returned to Chicago and immediately swore out warrants for the arrest of the two men. The cases against them were continued until June 22, in $1,000 bonds. — Wants Dr. Grave set Free, DENVER, June 13.—After the continuance of Dr. Graves' trial until the September torm of court and the continuance of the bail of §30,000 by Judge Burns yosterday afternoon, Judge Macon stated that he should not rest satisfled with the decision, and so a formal application for Dr. Graves' discharge from custody was made before Judge Burns by Judge Macon, The reason alleged for the discharge is that both the Januury and April terms of the district court here have passed without Dr. Graves being tried, which is contrary 1o law. The court designates no day upon which the motion for discharge might be heard. It isstated thatif Jukge Burns re- fuses the application then an cffort will be made to have the doctor relessed on a writ of hubeas corpus, aud so have the case car- ried to the supreme court on that poiut. —— Selzed an American Flshing Vessel. The drowned are Mrs, Martin, a widow, and Mrs, Durham. 10 men under arrest are Joseph Caul and Peter Zanker. The four were well acquainted and it is said had often been out together. Last ovening they engaged a boat and rowed out to the Fourteenth strect erib. The men were accustomed to the use of oars and there seemed to be no danger, as the lake was not rough. When the crib was reached, all left the boat, remaining an hour. It was then decided to return to the city and Caul untied the boat. He and Zanker assisted Mrs. Durham to her seat, but as Mrs. Martin was ready to step in, the boat began to drift away. The woman beeamo oxcited and started to jump into the boat, but was stopped by the men, who told her to wait a moment. “We'll get closer,” said Caul, as he was making an_effort to bring the boat around. But Mrs, Martin did not heed the admonition. I will try anyway,” she said as she stepped back a fow feot from the edge of the crib and made a running jump. Her feet struck th side of thoe boat and it instantly cap- sized. All four were thrown into the wator. 3 Both Caul and Zanker are good swim- mors, but before they could reach the women they sank. The men made every effort to save their lives, but could not, so they say. They were ham- pered by the darkncss, and as soon as they could, righted the boat. A search was then made for the bodies, which they thought might be floating, but after an hour's fruitless work they rowed back to shore. Upon their arrival they went at once to the Cottage Grove avenue station Lieutenant Healey heard their stor and concluded to detain them until a further investigation can be made. —— Carrled fis Guns in Sight.
