The failuro was not entirely unexpected. The deposits will aggregate $15,000. The princi- ple depositors are among the business men of Cortland, but it is not probable that any of them had money enough in the bank to seriously impair their business. Particulars of the failure are impossible to obtain at this date. The bank was voluntarily closed by the directors. Spring wheat is looking well and promises a bountiful harvest. Corn is making a splendid growth and farmers are now busily engaged in cultivating it. It is esti- mated that four inches of water fell in five hours. It was just in time to save the oat crop, but too late to do wheat any good. Pastures are very backward, A groat many farmers are still feeding their stock. Corn looks well but many pieces have had to be anted. The apple crop will be very light, pecially winter varieties. Betts. The case was given to the jury soon after 6 o'clock, and while the jury went to supper Betts was taken down to_the jail again. To Deputy Sheriff Hoagland he said he was confident that the jury wouldn’t con- vict hime, there were two or three men on 1t that would never vote to pronounce him guilty, if they had to hang it for days. When an hour later he was informed the jury had agreed he grew pale with apprebension, and hurriedly asked what che verdict was.
