Cnicaao, 1L, Oot. 26.—Henrv Croft, mem- ber of parliamnat from Hritish Columbia, is in the city getting Chicago capitalists inter- ested in a schsme to build a new Canadian intercontineatal road. Ho hus already boon remarkably successful aud it is expected that over 5,000,000 will be pleaged here to further the outerprise. Tho proposed new road is to be known as the Canada Western and will ba 1,050 miles long, opening thous- ands of square miles of good erazing, timber, agricultural and mining lands, T'he surveys have niready been muiae aud the British Pa- cific Construction company, incorporated at Victoria with a capital stock of $5,000,000, is ready to commence work as soon as the land grants have been secared, which will proba- bly be next mouth. ROAD, Cupl- Prosperity of the At Officials of the Atchison, Toveka & Santa Fe¢ are particularly pleased with tke report to be laid before the annual meeting of stockholders at Toneka tomorrow. It 1s ona of tke most favorable raports ever made by that company, presenting 4 marked contrast to the rather discouraging financial state- ments of recent years. During the first nine months of this year the gain in wross earn- ings has amounted to 2,243,051 This increase, it 1s claimed, is largely due to tho natural development of the territory traversed by the road, and 1s not the result of excep‘ionally favorable cir- cumstances. Consequently there 1s occasion to believe that tha presen® prosverity of tho company will continue, It is not expected, however, toat even under such circum- stances tho Atchison will return to a pay- ment of dividends within the next.ycar or two, Like the Rock Island, it will. no doubt, devote a large portiou of 1ts earaings to improvements befors bezianing Lo dis- tribute the profits to stockholders. The Freight Blockade, A blockado that seems to ba growing more serlous every day 13 intorforing with east- bound shipinenis of grain, Several roads havo issued instructions to their western agents te receive no more eastbound freignt until further orders. The Chicago, Milwiu- kee & St. Paul has orders for 4,000 cars which 1t cannot furnish, and the other roads aro fast getting into the same prodicament. The only way to reliove the situation 1s to refuse to take new business until the lines are clearsd of the accumulated freignt, and this is the covrss that is now belag adopted. hison. s RUMORED EXPRESS CHANGES, Now the Talk is That the surlington Wil Conduct 1ts Own Business. For months past the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy railroad has bren cousiering the advisability of conducting its own express business, which undoubtedly has occasioned tho rumors prevalent in express circles that a chauge from the American o the Wells- Fargo company was contemplated, Burliugton ofiicials have, during the past year, felt that they were uot recaiving the tonnage from tne Wells-Fargo company that thoy deserved, and the old idea of taking care of their express business was vevived. But as the Burlington people realized that should they undertake the management of their expross business their tonnage would fall considerably bslow the present, they began to cast about for a reasoa to iucrease their present receipis and the rumor that they were contemplatinz a change in express companies muy be attributud to that roud. Mr. L. A, Garoer, suporintendent of the American Expr corapany, when ques- tioned by @ Bee reporter, sald: **This talk of 0bauge always arises when contracts are about to expire. But there is nothiug in the rumor that the Wells-F'argo company has re- oceived the contract to haul the express on the Burlington east of the river next year. In faci, everyihing points to the same ami- cable arranpoment as at present exists. Too American will continue to look afterthe busi- ness east of the nver, the Welis-targo com- pany west of Pla‘tsmouth. Of course, 1 have known for some time that the Burlington peo- ple bave been considering the proposition of conducting their own express business, but when they have cousidered what & loss Lo Lheir line this would entail I think they have glven the matter up. As far as the Welis- ["argo aud American companies are con- cerned, thoy have no fight aud you may say that 1t 1s my judgment that nochange will be made this year nor for many years Lo come, The business now is equitably divided, we are at peace with the F'argo company and any ohango would be looked upon with misgivin by the stockholders of both companle These reports must ve expected yearly, but WL present there 1s 10 ground to base an idea upon that @ change is contemplated.” Stoppiug Stopover.
