Attornes General Hastings opened the in- wvestigntion in the following manuer: “Mr. Rewick, you bave been making cer- tain ch aguinst the Board of Public Lands und Buildings, Will you please tell this bearo what vou know about ite? Mr. Rewiek, before replying, demanded to be informed ab 1o the scope of the investiza- tion and whethor witnesses would be sum moned. He was informed tnat the board de sired 10 yrobe the mattor 1o the bottom, or words to tbat effect, and that witnesses wouls be summoned. He had, he said, s sumed the role of a cattle buyer ana had gone to different parties and agreed to pur- chase cattie at the same price paid by the asylum. He found thatthe asylum had been paving 2 cents s pound, but found that one man had sold cattie at 2ig cents a pound, He read A statement made in his presence by 8 Mr. Schenertorn, in which that party had told bim that the asylum had paid dor five cattle, but that one had afterwards gotten away. Emulating the Clam Again, Mr. Wheedon then brought up the oat deal with Hatbaway & Co., in which it is charged that forty wcres of oats were planted and cultivated by the help ai oats harvested and ground into feod und fed to Huthaway's cattle, which were after- wards soid to the state, Mr. Rewick said ne knew nothing about the matter except what he had been told. The Board of Public Lands and Buildings was nou competent to “tigate his charges. Secretary Allen him about the horses which he had claimed nad been Stolen from the state o Dr. Knapp. Mr. Rewick again refused to give the name of his informaut and when pressea stated that te bad geined a part of the information over the telephone and that he did not know who was st the other end of the line, Miakes Definite Statements. Mr. Whivmore then stated that he desired 10 cross-examine Mr. Rewick and he was, of course, allowed to proceed. His guestions brougit out the following statement : J. P. Higgins had sold to the state ten uead of cattls for $370.15. The vouchor called for £433.15. G. P. Loose bad sold two beeves and the state was mulcted in A simi- lar manner. G. A. Southwell received a personal check for §72 and the state was charged with §105. J. . Reynolds received $102 and the state paid §147. Frank Abbott received 28, aud again the state was over- charged, the voucher calling for $44.75. ln 1of these cases tho parties bad signed blunk vouchers and took persounl checks in vayment. Weaver, Johu Dorgan, Mr. Haas, the teamster who delivered tne coal, William Randall of Ord, Superintendent Bowman, Mr. Campbell, the cook at the asylum, Fred Race, Frank Jones, U. H. Mullan, with records of the case of the state aquinst Frank Abbou, F. Haas, B. G. Safford and Engieer Heory Mohler. Substanco of the AfMdavits. The afdevits which Mr. Rewick so per- sistently declined to turn over to the board were us follows: “*G. A. Soutbwell boing first duly swora deposes and says, that on or about ke 13th day of July, 1801, he soid to the asylum three head of catuln, that tney weighed 2,910 pounds, and that the price w 215 cents per pound; that he received J. E.
