Yesterday worning at about 1 o'clock an alarm of fire was sent in at tho engine nouse on North Main strect. A bluze had started fn the rear of the City Steam laundry, owned by Biadler & Bledler, and was threatening to dewiolish not only the launary but a num- ber of houses on either side. The fire was burning briskly when the men arrived, but after somo hard and effective work the flames were axtinguished. The entire rear part of the laundry building was destroyed, together with the machinery it coutained, and the damage is estimated at $00. None of the goods in the establishment were in- ured. It is covered by #1,000 insuranoe, T'he houses of Justice C. A. Huwmmer and De. J. The bids of both agents wero rejocted, because they uppoared 100 high, and the members of the boacd thonght there was an understanding between Lhe agouts and competition was thereby pre- vented, A blackboard was ordered placed in tho new schoolroom at ‘Twenty-fourth and I streots, ‘Tnis building has been leased for school purposes for ten mouths, the incroased attendanca demanding additional room, ‘I'he proper committee was instructed to investigato the advisability of putting in o watee main to the Brown rk school. Yesterday's auction sate at the stock mar- ket at the Union Stock Yurds attracted a large number of local and eastern buyers, the large pavillion being filled during the progress of the sale. All good horses sold at satisfactory prices, but some of the offerings were very poor and made trads somewhat dull. About sixty horses were in all sold. Good drafters, drivers and chunks woro freely taken by the eastern buyers, and the local purchasers ulso purchssed some of the best animals, The horso market continues to grow and is ono of the best in the country.
