H. Van Brunt's office on Fourth street, near Broadway, was opened yester- day morning tho discovery was mado that burglurs had been there during the night. The front door of the building was unlocked, both safe doors were open, aund the cash drawer had been broken open. Thers was not'a cent in the entire establishment, so the burglars were disappointed 1n their hopes of getting rich in a single night. A tine gold watch had been Iying in a tin box iu one of the compartments of the safe, and the box was found broken open ana the watch was missing. A lot of nvtes and other valusble papers which were in the box were un- touched, The watch was the only article tuken, so far as could bo learned, There 1s no clue to the identity of the guilty parties, but as the front door of the oftice has & Yale lock it is supposed that the burglary was committed by somo ono who was acquaiuted with tho premises. A burglary was also committed at tho fruit storo kept by Carmon & Thilo at the corner of Main street aud Willow aveuuve. The t s entered by prying up tho cellar door on tho sidewalk on Willow Avenuo. That thoy could do this under vhe bright light of an arc lamp not fifty fost away without belug caught is a_matter of somu little sur- prise, but they dia 1, and after filling up their pockets with §10 worth of fruit and confectionery they made off without leaving tho slightest clue by which they could be followed. The question whether Hon, Thomas Bow- man's refusal to run as a candidate for re- nomination for congress from the Ninth Towa district was tho genuine article, or was in- tended as a tomporary makeshift, bas been asked frequently ever since his declaration was published several months ago in the daily papers. Thero were not a fow, in the democraticas well as the republican ranks, who thought that as the campaign secason came on Bowman would reconsider bis uae- cision and entor the raco again. Later de- velopmonts go to show that lie still _holds to bis determination not to run. Thursday afternoon he and B. H, Merriam, a well known member of the local democracy, were seated on the curbstono of the courthouse vard talking politics, and a republican, who is acknowledged to be truthful, was sitting not far awsy, where he could hear without being seen. *No, I don’t like the way they doin con- gress,” said Bowman: “it's too much liko goiug to school. You've ot to be there at rolicall, and th you can go away for awbile, but-the first thing you know you've gotto be back for rollcall. Idon't liko it, aud 1 dou’t 1ntend to run again.” “But, Tom.” rejoinea Merriam, ‘you're the only democrat in this district that wo can put up with the gnost of ashow of winning. “D— if L care,” was the rejoinder; I shau't run.” And there the matter stands. This decli- nation is considered by his friends to bo final, and tiey are now bhustliug about to find some one else who will pose as a sneep before the shenrers. He was arrested yesterdaay afternoon on an information issued from Justico Swearingen's office charging bim with larceny and forgery. In brief, the story of Manager Tarpy of the machine com- puny is as follows All the ugents who sell machines have blank leases, which are made out and si¢ned by the purchaser aud the agent, specifying the terms upon which the mackine is bought and the times at which tho paywents be- come due. If & machine is sold for cash no louse is required, but the cash is turned in with the order. When Spark took cash orders he failed to turn 1 the cash, but in- stoad made out false leases and forged the names of the purchasers to them. How long this went on 18 not kuown, buv in some way the fraud was detected and Spark wus ar- rosted, Hpark, o the other hana, claims to be in- nocent, and declares that the filing of the in- forwation nguinst him is a picce of spito work, dono for the purpose of getting even with him for claiming some commissions for sales that were riade in the ofice and would be therefore coming tw the clerk in the of- tice, ‘Tue information alloges that the names of the women which have been forged to the fictitious leases are Sarab Olinger, Julia Burry, Saran Ward and Minnie Gibson, Besides these four, Tarpy claims to have found another since the information was filed. Spark was unabloe to give bail and was sent to the counwy jail until this after- noon, when he will be given a bearing. ———— DoWitt's Sarsaparilia is relianle, e To buy, sell, rent or exchunge real estate. Baking Over the Ashe Oaly the ashes and the still hot walls of the burned portion of the annex at the Deaf and Dumb lustitute now indicate the fury of the tempest of flame that ragod there thiryy hours ago.
