The history of this tumultuous epoch in the oreanization’s carcer is briefly this: Owing to an inadequato source of revenue, engendered principally vy a laggard ay- ment of dues on the nartof a large numnber of members, the directorate, at recent meet- ings have been endeavoring to devise ways and means of meeting sundry obligations in o manner that would subserve the best interests of the club and av the same time prove satisfactory to a :arge element of its memborship, At the Iast meeting, a week ago, they arrived at the conclusion that this could bo best accomplistied by levying an assessment, of 310 on each member, and at the sume ume raising the initiation fee from $10 to $25. By this procedure it was ficured out that the club could unburden itself of all pressing indebtedness and place itself on a busis to cater to the tastes of a large majority of 1ts members by a scries of attractive und expen- sive cards during the autumn and winter months, any at the same time be enabled to squarely ineet all expenditures incurred and muintain the excellent character of the or- ganization. T'hat the directors hit upon not only the most feasible, but the most satistactory plan toall concerned, was fully attested by its unanimous ratification ata meeting in which nothing short of reocllion was anticipated. President Ames submitted his statement embodying all that is included in the avove and a good deal more, and then the transient thunders of the meaningless storm reverber- ated throuzh the gymuasium. Fiery, vebe- ment. and vociferous speeches were made by members imaginiug themselves aggrieved, and passionate and dispassionate re- sponses wero made by different mem- bers of the directorate, uutil it looked indeed as if much disaster, 1f not the complete overthrow of the club, was im- minent. This end would have been inevita- bly reached, too, bad not the members in- dulging in this meauingless and ill-advised assault upon the main bulwarks of the organ- ization, suddenly realized what the outcome of a continuance of the fight meant. 1t came like an electrical stroke, and liko the sbift- iug of a sceno in the theater, The very members who baa been kicking at ‘what, they hardly knew, called for a wotion put by one of their number to ratify and indorse the action of the directors, and votea yes harder and louder than any one else, bis indorsement of the leeitmate work of the directors was unanimous, and thunderous und more than anything eise pnt tho stamp of burlesque upon the whole affuir, ‘Tnat the directors did perfectly right, and what they were strictly eatitled 0o, Inust NOTICE OF ASSESSMENT OF DAM- AGES FOR GRADING. ‘0 the owners of all lots and parts of lots and real estite nlons the alley running enst nd west adjolning lots ), 3, 34, 05, 86, ind 40 in biock 4.
