Creevy, now appearing in Harper's Bazar, aro attracting deserved attontion on account of their popu- lar and praetical nature. This week's num- ber contains an urticle on the “Fertilization of Plants.” " In the same paper Bluck's novel, “Wolfonberg,” his latest production, is contiuued, A neat edition of Longfellow’s **Evange- lins" s just issucd from tho press of Johu B. Alden, New York. The little volume is pro- fusely illustry designs from Birket Foster and Jane Beaham. This is one of a sorics of standard poems, being presented to the public in au attractive form ava mers nowinal cost by the same firm, “The Wrecker,” by Kobert Louis Steven- son aud Lloyd Osborn, which bas appeared T 5 zine during the ar, is now issued in book form. Like il of M Stevenson’s productions it 18 in- tensely interesting. But the interest is in tho ovolution of the plot, notin the dovelop- ment of charncter. The scone of action changes from Europe to America and from Amorica out into the Pacific ocoan. There is enough bldba shed to satisfy the average reader of tho dime novel literature of days gone bv. Yet AMr. Stevenson's work is of a high order of romance writing; 1t 15 tho work of au artist, presenting clear, vivid pietures, somewhat hignly colored, as the necessities of such fictional art as that of the author of *“Lao Master of Ballautrae and *Treasure Island”’ demands, but, udmirablo withal ana rotentively attractive. “The Wracker” is romarkable for the ingenuity displayed by tho autbor in drawing out the finely spuv threads of his plot, leading thom this way and that and at last bringing them togethor, aud concecting them, so as Lo muke @ complete whole. Mr. Stevonson caunot be ranked with the man who, anderstanding men and the motives of men, builds up & character consistent with the surrounaings of its development, who draws a faithful picture of what happens in this overyday world of ours; at best he can but attai thit place in luglish _literature which Jules ‘erne occuples in Freoch literature, —_— oLEDO, L0ws, April 6, 1801, Or.
