The three last named defendunts are well known butchers of this city, and Meschendort claims to have reason for believing that they have been backing Tolle in the charges which he made against Meschendorf. aiageutis I ry as & Luxury, There is no more sansible, enjoyable luzury, no more health-giving, pleasure- able ane than a horse and huggy or a team and carringe. Old and young, babies and all can share in the enjoy- ment. Mr. Holland, who has recently returned from Los Angeles, Cal., hus planned for furnishing Council Bluffs people the luxury of livery in its best form. He has secured what has been known as the ‘Rink’ stable, and has completely remodeled it, making it not only one of the largest, but one of the most complete of any in the west Everything is so or- that a lady or child can go gh the entire establishment with no more cause of offense than in a dry goods store or other business house. Mvr. Holland prides himseif on having his business conducted on this poh and what is true of the stables is also true of the stock. Trusty horses. new buggies and fine carriages, new harness, reliable drivers, in fact necessary for a first class livery stable are provided, the assurance being given that it will be maintained thus as the finest livery stuble in the city. Mr. Hol- land hus had years of experience and not only knows what is needed, but how to supply the need. Besides the livery he will board horses and take the same care of private rigs that he does of his own. In remodeling the stables new floors have been laid, new stalls built, new harness room, wash rooms, ete., in fact there is little to remind one of the former appearance, except the walls, The pub- lic will appreciate the improvements made, and Mr, Holland will doubtless speedily win a liberal share of the pat- ronage. Neglect of the City Council to Make a Tax Levy, Will South Omaha havea tax levy this year is an interesting question which has just been raised, No steps have as yet been taken by the vity council to make a levy, and the time for the prelimiuary steps in the matter as proviged by law bas expirea. The charter governing cities of the first class, having more than 10,000 population, plainily provides hcw the city council stail proceed in making the aunual tux levy. The first step necessary is the procuring of an as- sessment roll from the county clerk and which shall be in tue hands of the city clerk not later than the third Monday in June, Immediatelv thereafter the councilsnall give six days notice of its sitting as a board of equalization, which shall last five days. This must bo done before the time for the first meeting in July, at which meeting the levy must be made, The assessmont roil has not yet been re ceived by the city clerk from the county clerk nor hias the council given any notice of its intontion 1o sit as a board of equalization. The regular July weeting of the council oc- curs next Tuesday evening and by the pro- visions of the charter the levy should bo mude at that meeting. It will be impossible to mako the levy at that time and the ques- tion arises how will the difticulty be ov come. It has been suggested that the council should sit as a board of equali- zation as soon as possible, aud when Tues- day evening’s meoung {s held take a recess for a sufticient length of time to enable the provisions of the law to be complied with. Auotner suggestion is that the absence of o quorum Tuesday evening would bring about the desired result acd give asufficient length of time to secure the assessment roll and en- able the council to meet as un equaiizing board. The blame for this oversight of the coun- cil is not laid at an. erllculnrpermn'l door, and can te attrivuted only to the fact that the members are not as familiar with the provisions of the law for tax levying as they should be, The members will undoubtedly prove equal to the emergency, but the ques-* tiou is how !
