Abolitlon of Bratal Initiations, Rochester Pobt-Expre: The coliefio world, with all its ramifications stretch- ing into every profession and every walk in life, has been shaken by the tragedy which has caused the death of a Yale sophomore. Wilkin Rustin of the class of '04, was elected to the Delta Kappa Epsilon society, one of the two great junior societies at Yale; During the initiation three fellow-students were conducting him to a cafe on Temple street, a resort of the students. As usual in_such'''eases, the candidate was blindfolded, His companions told him to run and he dashed ahead at top speed, distancing his friends. Thoy shouted for him to stop and tried to catch him, but he suddenly leaped” to the right side of the road and ran against the pole of a_hack which stood at the entrance to a livery stable. He fell to tho ground unconscious. Doctors were hastily summonea and he was taken home. The was not at first con- sidered serious. Indeed, so little was the nccident regarded that the same night Rustin took the fraternity oath in his room and he even felt so much bet- ter thai he desired to go out. On Sun day symptoms of peritonitis appeared, and on Monday last he was dend. With everything to live for, with youth, education, friends and means, young Rustin owed his death to carel thoughtlessness of those who called themselves *‘men.” The university, the city and the country were lncx{xrcnimy shocked. The sophomore and junior classes at Yale held meetings in which resolutions wero passed doploring the ovent, and n badge of mourning was adopted. The two junior societies held meetings and unanimously adopted the following resolutions, pledg- ‘"f an _abandonment of rough tesolved, That every candidate shall assent to the oath of the society and shall sign the constitution. Resolved further, That the initiation ceremony shall be the above and noth- ing more. A special committee of the faculty be- gan an immediate investigation, and it is said that they will suggest the expul- sion of the two junior societies from Yale. 1t is avident that some important step must be taken. Accidents have hap pened t0o often. It was only a few months ago that the same society at Harvard was arraigned for branding the arm of William Lloyd Garrison, an initi- ate. The goo® that a college society does for & man is undoubtedly grert, but the risk which he runsin joiniug it is becoming formidable. The college fraternities, confident in the good they were doing, and proud of the long rolls of honored alumni, in the college faculty and out, have allowed thoughtless horse play to exist side by side with earnest- ness. That no harm was meant is evi dent in the fact that the fraternity had chosen Rustin to become one of 116 num- ber, that the members bad conferred upon him the greatest compliment of which they ware capable, and asked him to become a “‘brother.” The blindfold- ere only careless, ing und the running thoughtless *‘fun.” The (father, in the classmates of takin, leave - of his dead boy. did not condemn those who had led in the ini- tiation for an accident which obviously could not have been forescen. He hoped that their rdmembrance of the event would gradually lose its bitter- ness, and that they would not continue to reprouch thomselves for o calamity which resulted from no intentional fzult of theirs. But it his taught them a les- son which they will, never forget. The mind of one of ‘the classmates may be- come unbalanced at the frightful mem- ory, and the resolutions adopted by the societies show the long and lasting ef- fect which the traged§ will have. The coroner, after a careful investiga- tion of the facts, sums up the case as follows: *I am of the opinion that Wil- kin Rustin’s death was caused by the carelessness of the students conducting said initiation. T am further of the opinion that this carelessness was purely the result of boyish fun, entirely uniatentional, and not such carelessness 1s is known to the law as criminal care- essnese. 1 find that modes of initiation have been practically unrestrained; that they have entirely exceeded the bounds of reason and propriety, and are often dangerous to health and life, and I recommond that the faculty either abol- ish or restrain these modes of initiation aitogether, or have have entire super- vision and control of the same.” Ho adds that shsuld vhe faculty fail to ao thii tho initiation should be put under the supervision of “the proper authori- ties,” There is every likelihood thLat his recommendations will be complied with, and if they are young Rustin’s death will be productive of fortunrte re- sults, A Moving Forest. The military stratagem mysteriously foreshadowed in ‘*Macbeth” by the phrase *‘till Birnam wood remove to Dunsinane” was repeated in Copenhagen recently. A procession of 100,000 citi- zens and provincial visitors taking part in the royal golden wedding festivities marched to the Amalienburg castle. In the students’ section of this grand army of peace and good will every man curried & branch of a beech tree, and the combination had tho effect of a mov- ing forest. — —e——— Quick Delivery.
