This Is Omaha’ ent Week—We Mast Rise to the Spirit of the Veeasion, Osiina, June 13.~To the Elitor of Tae Bre: The aimost entire abseace of decora tions on buildings, in viow of the annual en- campment of the National Competitive Drill association, which opens tolay, has been noted and unfavorably commented upon aiready by many strangevs. The business men of Omaha, who are naturally quick to appreciate the advantages that follow an exhibition of enterprise of this kind, do not appear in this case to appreciate fully. yet, what the occasion demands at their bauds. They wiil fully realize 1t tomorrow evening when they will see the erandest wilitary parade pass their doors that has ever taken olace in Omaha or will ba seen here again for many yearsto come. The crack military companies of the United States from thie Atlantic to tho Pacific and from the gulf states toour norttera boundury line, together with the S:cond United States infantry from Fort Omata, will make a grand military parade long to be re- membered. There is time yet for the merchants to put out their decoratious, uua 1 believo they will do this after it Las boen called to their at- tention. It should be remembered thai this is not the orly event coming to Omaha this mmer that will demand public decorations. Ve huve asked tho poople’s party to hold their national convention in Omaha early in July and they should be welcomed with sometiing L.sides plain store fronts, This couvention will be nearly as large as both the republican and democratic conventions put togetber and will be as big o thing inis way for Omaha as this competitive drill js. Then further, iu August, we are to have the Shriners, and an Omaha Shriner tells mo that at least 10,000 memers of the order will be in this ¢ A larze proportion of merchants already bave decorations. Those who have not, in view of these coming cvents, should cer- tuinly provide themselves with some, and all should unite in decorating their buildings as hundsomely as possible for the grand parade tomorrow ovening and in recognition of the visit to this city this week of the thoasands of militiamen who are here. 1t shoula also be borne in mind that many thousands of visitors are coming in from the state to attend the Manufacturers aud Consumers exhivition at the Coliseam, which s another reason why Omaba should put on its gala clothes this week. A prompt response will be of great benefit to Omaha, far outweigh- ing the smali cost of tho display. Yours trul L W. Mixex. Why Don't We Decorate? Omama, June 12—To tho Editor of Tue Bee: One taking a stroll through the prin- cipal streets of Omaha this afternoon would never surmise that this city was on the eve of a national military encampment—with guests of the city already within her gates —not one yard of bunting displayed, neither can we see a flag, with the exception of two on a telegraph pole and the banner foating over Tui BEE buildiug. Is it possible that Omabu can be unaware of the courtesy due our military guests to this extent ina tional affair of this kind, or are the me; chants <o thoughtless, indifferent or so lack ing in woat is due these visiting militia in this respect that they neglect this important matter! Dou't they know that for tnis fail- ure (o thus show some little courtesy that they will be severely criticised by our visi- tors, especially those whe have attended af- fairs of this kind before somewhere else. If Owaha desires to be deemed a metropolitan city she must show some knowleage of the little courtesies duo these oceasions. 1s this town asleep, or what is the matter? Or is itonly forcotfulness? If Omaha would be remembered she must display more art in these matters; she is certainly remiss in this case.
