The convention was called Lo order by President J. D. Hicks, general yard- master of the Big Four road, with head- quarters at_Iudianapolis. After prayer by Rev. Mr. Lasby of St Paul's Methodist Episcopal church of this city, Muyor Weir deiivered an address of welcome, in which ho paid a compliment to the fine looking body of men boefore him and enlarged some- what upoff tho beauties and advantages of Lincoln, Prosident Hicks responded on behalf of tho delegates ana complimented the mayor on his felicitous remarks, He stated that the welcomo extended them by the people of Lincoin was the heartiest yet received from any city iu which the association had met. The convention then took a recess until after- noon, ‘The afternoon session was iven up 10 u discussion pf the various safety anpli- ances invented for the more effective protec- tion of the lives of railway employes. Sufety Appliances Favored, After the closo of the discussion on safety appliances President Hicks announced the following committee: On draw pars—A. D. Shaw, J. W. Coneys, Fred Dewe, McMabon and J. M. Glunt. The comuittee's report, which will be presented tomorrow, will bé thoroughly discussed, as tho matter is one of the most important to come before the convention. Secretary Marshall said to Tur Bee repre- sentative this ovening that a strong memo- 11al wiil be presented to congress on this sub- ject by the association. Two-thirds of the ceidents to railway men, he said, resulted from the present system of drawbars in use on the differont ralroads in the country. The association does not recommend any par- ticular drawbar, but simply asks for the in- troduction of a uniform system on all roads. Tho election of officers will take place to- morrow. The convention will conclude with a picnic in Liccoln purk tomorrow afternoon. 1o Indicted for Murder, County Attorney Snell this afternoon filed a formal chargo of murder against W. H. Ir- vine. The indictment charges lrvine with having killed C. E. Montgomery unlawfully, feloniously and With deliberate and premedi- tated mal Irvine 1s now confined in the county jail and shows no signs of the insanity that lias been attributed to him recently. Aninformation was also filed against Green 8. Gravely and Dan Cashian, charging the former with murder in the first degree for the murder of Charies Thomas, Cashisn is charged with having haroored and pro- tected Gravely while he was eluding the ofticers, Badly Hurt In a Runaway, Tom Murphy, living at 2133 J streot, was scriously mjured in a runaway accident last night. Ho was driving & team of spivited horses when they started to run aw . He tried to stop themn, but before he could do so Lo was thrown from the wagon and_dragged over the ground for soveral blocks. The bones of his left foot were broken, his legs badly lacorated and his head cut ‘opon. Verdict of the Corouer's Jury, The inquest over the remains of Bert Mouberlyand Frank Nowbei ry, the twoyoung boys killed in the Missouri Pacitic yaras in this city last evening, was held this after- noon, but it was not until late this evening that the jury roturned its verdict, The parents of tho dead boys were represonted at tho inquest as well as tho railroad company. The priucipal wituess was J. G. Casey, the engineer of the switeh engine, He testified that he did nov seo the boys on the engine until just beforo the accident.
