He formed the ac- quaintance of asmooth talking individual the other day, and the smooth talking indi- vidual gave him to uuderstand that ho was looking for men to work for him at Des Moines. He held forth enticing inducements to Hayden to enter his employ, and the old, old story that bas broken so many Learts and pocketbooks was told over again, Hayden and bis to-be employer left over the Rock Island for Des Moines, and the em- ployer did not discover” that he was dead broke until ho reached a small station this side of Atlantic. Then the awful truth burst in upon him. He bad to have $10, and as that was the size of Hayden's pile it was all Hayden could do, but” he did it. Pretty soon he left the train, and when he reached Atlantic Hayden began to ask where his friend had gone. “The conductor told bim that the fellow he had been riding with had done a good deal of riding back and forth over the Rock Island, and be had spottad hin for s confi- dence man. DISCOVERED AT THE LAST MOMENT When the Jailer Captured the Implements With Which the Work Had Been Done the Men Weakened—Local News Notes, The kind hearted jurors who set George Wells free after a trial in the district court the other day may be thanked for the almost successful attempt that was made by the prisoners now conflued in the county jail to escape, Weils was one of the fellows who robbed the residence of L M. Treynor, and although he claimed to have been merely a spectator of the affair, his story was so thin s o deceive uo one excepting the average juror. He was discharged, however, whilo Aunderson, his accomplico, was found guilty. Ata latec hour Tuesday night it was dis- covered that in some way a saw had been smuggled into the jail and the prisorers had been busily engaged in sawing their way out. The discovery was purely accidental as the men had covered up their work very ingauiously by making a paste composed of soap and dirt, anc had fastened the broken ends of achain anda padlock together so ho happened to bs looking closely would have noticed that any- thing of the kind bad beer done, Tho suspicions of the jailer were aroused by some strange actious on the part of some of the prisoners, and he stationed himself where he vould see without being seen, 1t was not long till he saw Aaderson, the con- victed burglar, working with a fine saw 1n oue hana and a rudely coustructed handle 1 the other. Pouncing upon Anderson, ho made him give up both saw aod handle by moans of various blood- thirsty throats. A search was at once mado 10 see what harm had beon done, and it was then learned that the pris. oners had succeeded in getting a chain sawed through and a padiock half way severcd, so that the other halt of the paalock and an iron bar were all that kept them from the fresh air. All the prisoners were locked up in tho steel cylinder, where they will be kept untit their cases ave finally disposed of, Tho gang is an unusually hard one, eight of them hav- ing already served terms in the penitentiary and a large proportion of the whole numbar on a fair way across tho state again, Two of the prisoners were induced by Sheriff Hazen to talk. They stated that four saws, done up in a small bundle, were thrown through the rear window by a man shortly after 10 o'clock Tuesday morning, aud all the sawing was done betweon that timoand oightfall. It s theovinion of the sheriff and his men that the saws were bougnt i Owaha by Wel who was ais- charged Saturday night, and brought to the jail with a view to giving his pal, Anderson, his liberty. ‘The tools are of the finest stee), and cut through an iron bar in short order. Another half hour's work would probably have enabled all the prisoners in the jail to make their escape, 1f the story told by the prisoners is true, thero are still three saws concealed in the'jail, but as the prisoners are all confived in the stecl cylinder therais no danger of their using them in making their escapo. Three strangers entered his saloon and commencad in a 10 create a disturbance. Zimmerll remon- strated with them, but without effect. Soon he went Into the back room of tbe saloon and. was busy about something, when his visitors followed him, and, according to the statewents of eyowit- nosses, jumped upon him without any provo- cation, and commenced to pound him One of the assailants pulled a murderous iooking chisel from a hip pocket and would probably haveused it with serious effect had not one of Zimmerli’s friends seizfd it. Zimmerli was apparently gaining the better of the other man when the lutter siezed the left cheek ot his adversary und bitouta piece about the size of a silver doilar. During the encounter Zimmerli's thumb was almost sev- ered from his band. The affair was reported to the police, and within an hour three men were captured and putin the city jail, but no charge wus en- tered acainst them, They gave their names as Scott Butler, Dan Curtis and I'rank Me- Noal, Curtis was the one who did the chew- ing, ond the other two, so fur as known, were not particularly implicatod in the fight, except that they were with Curtis when he entered tho saloon. Curtis will be charged with mayhem and will undoubtediy go across the state. What charge will be placed against tho other twois not positively known yet. The opinion of the police is that the three were members of a housebreaking gang that had come over from Omaha with the inten- tion of doing a job during the evening. They think that the feilows entered Zimmerli's saloon and Curtis und Butler engaged the proprietor in a fight so that in the excite- ment McNeal could go through the cash drawer. The fact that one of the men had a large chisel, such as are commonly used for getting into houses, 1s thought to be an in- dication in this direction. —— Internutional Cure association rooms are in annex to Grand hotel, 520 Pirst avenue, Council Bluffs, In. For most of that distauce the loss is to the tracks and sidings of the different lines of railroads. 'The severest loss, however, is in the destruc- tion of the refineries and manufacturing plants where so many of the survivors earned a glivelihood, It is this loss of permancnt employment for months to come that will fall henvily uoon the working classes, and which will necessarily put them on the list of thos requiring relief. Oericns, S, D., June 8.—[Special to Tis Bek.]—This section ek perlonced a downpour of rain Sunday morning and the preceding night, and Horseheud creek was raised very suddenly from an insignificent stream to a mighty torrent, which rose at the rato of about. four feet per hour until the whole valley, nearly a mile in width, was covered with a solid sen of rushing water about eigh- toen feet above low water mark, and from three to ten feet over the entire valloy. All settlers in the valley left their houses for high land, with soma narrow escapes on ac- count of the suddenness of the rise, aud many took chances on their lives n attempting to liberate stock that was inclosed in tho low lands. One man, Homer T. Huat, lost his life in attempting to ride a borse across a ravine near the main channel, in order to liberate some horses that were on the bot- tom. Although he was an expert swimmer the swift current carried him down the val- ley about eighty rods until he struck the main channel and was sucked under in mighty whirlpool. His young wife, to whom he bad only been married about thrée wonths, with his other relatives, stood on the shore to see him perish without being able to offer aid. Other fatalities aroapprebended. Som stock was drowned. All the bridges in_the valley except one wero washod out. The water soon ell, leaving the trestops and bushes along tlo creck lodged with drift rubbisi, but left the meadows in good condition, No dumage was done to the crops which are looking ex- ceeaingly promising. The body of Mr. Hunt was found today after two days’ searching, It was dragged from tho bottom of the croek, in about fifteen feet of water, near where he was taken under 10 the whirlpool.
