ALLEN ROOT OPPOSES THE ISSUE He Says the Hridge is Not Needed and That the People Have the Power Their Own Hands—Mr. Da- mont Explains. The Citizens altiance held an open meeting at Knights of Labor hal 2 South Four- teenth street, last evening to discuss the Ne- braska Central boud proposition. There w a small attendance, but considerable interest was manifested in the discussion. Alien Root took the initiative and occupied an bosrin teiling why tne laboring msn should mot vote for the proposition. he laimed that the contract was all on one side. The city and county paid §750,000 to & curporation that only existed on paper. The Nebraska Cenatral compauy was not bound to anything. They could take the bouds and then spend as little or much as they waoted w0 and the city would have no redress. There was no necessity for another brigge anywi The present structure was not used tc half its capacity. The tolls over the Union Pacific bridge were excessive, but building & new briage was not the way to reguiate them. 1t was in the power of the people to make the Union Pacitic company reduce the toll by increasing their taxation. Corporations were all atike and there was nothing to prevent the Nebraska Ceutral from charyin bich tolls as the Union Pacific. The speaker also argued bat the city was not financially able to bond itself to that extent. It should pay its dedts before making any further 1uprovements. Mr. J. H. Dumont spoke at leagth in favor of the bonds. He 1ook up Mr. Root’s o tions one at a tin'e und pulverized them. He reviewed the bistory of the Nebraska Cen- tral company, which had originally consisted of twenty-five business men of Omata wh had eadured the tyranny of the Union Pa railroad as long as they could. The necessity for a new bridge was creater now than ever before. Thers was to be no delivery of bonds until the company had ex- ecuted " its part of the contract. In this re spect the proposition differed from tbe bond proposition granted to the Usion Pacitic The ordinance provided that the company should allow all other roads touse its bridge, approaches and tracks. It could not charge excessive rates becavse it was provided that three judges of tho district court should act as arbitrators in the matter. In return for the bonds the Neoraska Central company was to purchase property valued at about §1,000,000, which would afford terminal facilities sufficient for ail the roads that migit ever come into Omaha. It was bound to build & $400,000 union depot and a double-track bridge snd a dou track road, when onetrack wouid do its business just as well if cousiderea the demand of the presen A general giscussion ensued, in which the balusce of opinion seemed to be in favor of the proposition. - s of Hood's sarsaparilla is be The suece cause it possesses true merit, aud no claim is made for it which is not fally supported. i Drunkenness.
