Highest of all in Leavening Pow Rl [OMAHA'S NATIONAL BANKS The Comptroller of the Currency Lalls for a Statement, COMPARED WITH PREVIOUS STATEMENTS Decreased Loans and Increased Deposits With Idle Capital Piling Up 1s Not Looked Upon as a Favorable Indieation, In accordance with the rocent call fssued by the United States comptroller of the cur- rency the National banks of Omabahave pub- lished a statement of their condition at the close of business on May 17. A compilation of theso statements is given below, from which some useful information may be gained s to tke financial conditions existing in Omaha, Y As these statoments reprosent the condi- tion of business on one day only they are linble to vary somewhat from what might be termed the average condition, as the deposits of all banks vary wore or less from cay today. It is, therefore, possible to catch some banks 01 a day when the deposits have run low but at the same time otkers may bo bich, s0 that taking tho statements as a whols it is safe to assume that they furnish a fairly re- liable index of the actual conditions provail- 1we in banking cireles, Take the first item, loans and discounts, and it will be noted that the total for the nino national banks of Omaha is £10,014,- 638.20, Comparing this with the previous statement of March 1 ashght gain will be noted, tut compared with a year ago, that is May 4, 1801, there is a decroase of over hall a million dollars, At the same time the deposits have in- creased sinco May of last year 1,007,169 and since February, 1801, over £2,000,000. With decreased loans and increased de- posits 1t would naturally follow that the banks must be nolding a ‘groat deal of idle capital and that this is true is shown by the two items, cash on hand, and cash in banks. At the presont time tho banks have in_cash $8,041,500, or §1,806,700 more than on May 4 last vear. ‘The conditious then are simply increasea | devosits, decreased loans, and idio capital piling up in the bank vaults, and these are the conditions provailing not only in Omaha but in all the financial centers of the country from New York west. In a general way it is said that business {s good whon money is plenty but that is only truo when tho money is in goneral circula- tion. Idle capital in the banks does neither the banks nor the general business public any good. For that reason the accumulation of fale eapital is not looked upon asa good indication. Financiers gencrally reason that there must boa shrinkago in business and that there is not the usual disposition to e« bark in new business enterprises. “sunostpoy enoneN ST o wATIqON “Sorsmmoy 30 yavg iaonuN uvq ruonEN ISjIammo) uvq vy uvoRmY ® e “Lato to bed and eariy to rise will shorten the road to your home in the skies.” But early to bed and a “Little Earl r," the pill that makes life longer snd better and wiser, ——— e Put Chicago n Your Pocket.
