-~ — NEWS FROM COUNCIL BLUFFS Des Moines Recures the Next Towa Repub- lican Convention After Hard Work, WHAT DEFEATED COUNCIL BLUFFS Chalrman Mack Cast His Declding Vote with & View of Future Reward— Evidently He Guined Nothing by the Deal The Bluffs delegation to Des Moines re- turned yesterday ufter laboring long and hard with the members of the republican central committee in the vain effort to have Council Bloffs selected as the place for hold- ng the next state convention. By a vote of 6 1o 5 Des Moines was chosen as the place, but it was merely a matter of tuck that Coun- il Bluffs was left. Chuirman E. E. Mack of the committee was one of the strongest op- ponents Council Bluffs had on the commit- tee, but he chanced to be on a train which ‘was several hours late. 1If it had been thirty minutes later Mack would not have arrived until after the second ballot, and one of the advocates of Des Moines had promised to wheel into line with the Bluffs contingent alter voting once for Des Moines. But, owing to the frailty of human hopes, Mack arrived just in time to cast his little ballot for Des Moines, and that place won the prize. Those who voted for the Bluffs were J. M. Kemble of Muscatine, W. H. Norris of Manchester, J. G. Brown of Ma shalltown, P. L. Sever of Stuart and M. K Whelan of Hstherv J F. Wail of Mt. Ayr, s0 the Blufts delegates state. had prom- ised to vote for Council Bluffs, out changed bis mind. ““The grouna for Chairman Mack’s opposi- tion to us,” swmd 1. M. Treyaor yesterday, “is tne fact that there is considerable oppo- sition to him as a candidate for the chair- manship of the committee for the coming yeur. This opposition is mainly among ihose who favorea Des Moines iu the coutest just completed, and Le bad an idea that by voting with them he could secure their sup- ort later on. But he will find out that be ns lost the support of the Council Bluffs crowd without gaining an iota of strength from the others, and his defeat 1s certain As for the man who went back on his prom- ise, the day isn't very far away when we shall be avle to even up the score.” A FEW Necessities in the Toilet Department Offered at the Boston Store, Council Blufls, In. ALL THEIR TALK IS ABOUT BLAINE Pettigrew Intimates That the South Dakota Delegates May Betray the Trast Tm- posed in Them and Vote for the Man from Maine. w Yonk, May 26.—Political leaders 1n this and other states are beginning to flock to this city. Sonator Hiscock arrived here from Washington yesterday. Scnator Petti- grew of South Dakota registered at the Fifth Avenue hotel lust evening. Awaiting him was ex-Senator Platt, who at once took Sen- ator Pettigrew aside and heid an earnest con- versation with him. Senator Pettigrew was seen later. Ho at first declared that being & deiegate from n state which had been in- structed for Harmson he did not feel like expressiag an opinion on the situation. On being questioned the following was elicited: “It is true that South Dakota is instructed for Harrison, but it is equally true that this was done with tho understanding that Blaiue was not a candidate, South Dakota is un- questionably o Bimne state. 1t bas declared for Blaiue at every convention since 1t be- came u stute. Every man, woman and child is for Blaine. He coula poll more votes than any candicate that could be nominaied. A Man to Carry Montana, “He is the only republican whom I have in mind who could carry Montans, and her three electoral votes will be uecessary if New York stovld go democratic.” ‘Could Hurrison carry Montana?” asked. rry Montanat coraer of it.” “In tne event of Blaine's accentance, would the South Dakota delegation consider them- selves released from instructions ! “That is a question that is hardiy fair to ask,” be replied. *1 hardly thiuk the repub- licans of South Dakota could hold them strictly to account in such a conungency.” Hiscock Suys 1t's Bluine. Senetor Hiscock visited Secretary Blaine todny avd subsequently said: “Blaine will accept if nominated. 1am sure he will be nominated. He will write no more letters of declination. While not as well as 1 expected to find bim, beis improving daily and 1 um satisfied he is strong enough to undergo a presidentiel campaigu. Blaine Would Not Accept. The Herald's Washington correspondent telegraphs his paper as follows : “I don’t think Mr. 13laine would accept the nomiuation if 1t were tencerea him. He told me two months ago he did not want it. He felt that if elected he would not have the strength necessary to discharge the duties of the presidency.” This statement was made to me this after- noon by Senator Stauford of California. It was made without reserve and with the full understanding that it might be sent to the Herald. It hos been said that when California is reachea in the call of states the chairman of the delegation will rise and in stentorian tones announce that “*California casts her cizhteen votes for James G. Blaine.” This is what the delegation did four years ago at Chicago. even after Eimnc's cablegram de- clariug he would not accept, and it s been thought that the program wouid be repeated at Miuneapolis with & view 1o stampeding the conveution for Blaine. California for & Winner, I askea Seanator Stanford if this were provsble. *‘Mr. Blaine,” said he, ‘18 very popular in our state. He has always been popular there, but I don't believe our delegation will vote for him unless his name be formally pre- sented to the convention. I don’t think they will try to stampede the convention by voi- mg tor Blaine under any other circum- stances. The delegation is uninstructed and will vote at Minneapolis for the man who is st likely to be elected. Our people are well tisfied with Mr. Harrison. His adminis- tration bias been wonaerfully clean and re- spectable, I regard him as the best presi- dent we have had since Lincoln's day. I think the California people are generally of this opinion. My impression is that our dele- gation will vote for him upless there is good reason for our supporting soie other gentle- man.” NOT EN was He could not carry one OURAGED BY BLAINE.
