IN COLLISION, MET Rock Ialand and on Pacifie Traing Wrecked at Soath Omahn, At 4:30 yesterday afternoon there occurred & disastrous wreck east of Swift's pasking house and avout 1 block south of the Q street viaduot. The wreck occurred at the switch of the Rock Island company and was caused by a Rock Island passenger train and the Union Pacific fast mail, both east bound, coming together with a torriblo crash, Luck- 1ly no one was injured, the crews jumping and the four or five passengers on the Rock Island train escaping with a general shak- g up. The eauso of the trains coming togother is not easily explained. \Where the collision o curred & switch connects the Kock Island tracks wich the main lino of the Union Pa- cifio, over which the former company runs its trains into Omabn. Both trains were I ana neither crew expected a train on the other rond. The Union Pacific has a flagman located at the switch and when he behold both trains coming he attempted to flag the mail train, but it was too late, and on they sped, coming together with a crash which was heard for sevoral blocks awny. Tho fast mail was running at a rapid rate of speod, and the engino struck tho Rock Island locomotive with a terrible force, rais- ing the latter from the trucks and sending it over on its loft side, a complete wrock. The Union Pacific engine was badly damaged, tho coweatcher and headlight being knocked off, and the four frout wbeels left tho track. ‘'he baggago car of the Rock Island train suffored consiaerable damage, the front wheels and trucks beiog loosened, and the car stood toppled over to ono side, The front mail car of the Union Pacific train was also slightly damaged. The fast mail was drawn by Union Pacific engine 831, with Engineer Byers in the cab and Conductor Keene in charge. The train consisted of one baggage aud threo mail cars. When Eogineer Byors saw bis train sig- nalled by the flagman he roversed his engine and applied the brakes, but it wss too late and both he and his firaman jumped before the collision occurred and escapod unburt. A fow minutes after the collision occurred a switoh engine arrived and took the three mail cars not damaged on to Omaha, causing but a slight delay. The Rock Island train consisted of a oag- gARO car, ono chair car and threo sleepers, drawn by englne No, 452, with Engincer Me- Stoen In tho cab snd Conductor Moran in charge. The engineor and fireman jumped and escaped unburt. Dovaras, Wyo., May 17.—[Spectal Tele- gram to Tur Bee. |—From a gentleman who arrived from Buffalo today, who is in busi- noss thore and who refuses to allow his namo to bo used, comes very important in- formation with referenc to the rocent Well- man murder. When Sheriff Angus roturned with the body of George Wellzan, ho repcrted that he coutd find no evidencc of an mmbush. The ground was moist from recent rains and would show the footprint of man or beast plainly and he said thata most thoroush search failed to show any other signs than thoso of the animals rode by Wellman and Hathawa, “This is the ouly statement over wired from Buffalo, and in conscquonce the popular be- lief bas been that Hathaway committed the murder and that the crime should not be charged to the rustiers, ‘The facts aro that Wellman was shot from ambush by two men concealed in a small gulch or washout about 100 feet from the road. One of Angus’ deputies tamed S left Buffalo with the posso at the time Angus started. He returned after an absonce of two days and the story of himsalf and men loaves no room for doubt as to the manner in_which Wellman met his death. They found the tracks of thres Lorses losding up the gulch and when within balf & mile of the scene of the tragedy the riders bad dismounted, leaving one man to care for the horses. The other two bad walked up to within 100 feet of tho road and thero loisurely awaited the arrival of their victim, swoking cigavettes wmeanwhily to while away the timo as evidenced by tho half burned stubs foun there. When Weliman passed tho assassins shot him, und boforo roturning to where thoir horses were, one of the murderers walked over to whero Wellman lay und appropriated the pistol which tho dead wan carried. Hathaway scems 1o have bad very little fear of assussination, for he stopped the horsos within 300 yaras of the sceno of the shooting, ‘T'heclearly defined foot prints of horses und men in soft ground told this story as plainly as do the typo, and with no possibility of mistaks. A empty carividge for u 40-calibre Winchester was found where the assassins awaited their vietim and thoy could cusily have shot Hathaway while bo was chauging anials had thoy wished, The deputy und posse sot out on the plain trail of the wurderers and foilowed 11 avout twenty nilles into tho head of Nine Mile creek, but lost it in the rocks.
