NEWS FROM COUNCIL BLUFFS Diecovered an Opium Den and Becured the Proprietor, HOW THE POLICE ARRANGED THE ARREST Yee Wing Taken In with His Place in Fall Operation=Two Young Men Acted w8 Cappers—Lacal News Notes. Yee Wing is the name of an almond-eyed gentleman who has been out of the Flowery Kingdom jnst long enough to learn the art of swearing successfully in the United States, and who does up collars and cuffs, while you wait, at his little shanty on Broad near the corner of Seventh streot. A fow days ago it came to tho ears of tho police that Wing had something be- sides a laundry at the aforesaid shanty, and they accordingly set about finding what the mysterious somothing was which seemed to bo 80 enticing to the white people who oc- casionally visited the back room of the estab- lishment. Saturday night the police securca the sor- vices of a counlo of young f:llows who had been “hitting the pipe” right along to assist them in getting Wing by the neck, The two young fellows entered the place and intimated that they would furnish a proper consideration 1f Mr. Wing would furnish a pipe. A bargain was made, and at tho signal which bad been agreed upon the police entered by the front aud back doors simultaneously ana found the joint in full ~ opera tion, A look of desperation stole ir.to Wing's innocent eyes when he saw that he had-beon cornerod and he gave the apparatus a blow that sent it flying in all airections and broke the pipes, lamp and other fixtures in pie The fragments were picked up and carried along with their owner to the police station, whero the outfit will be brougat before Judge McG orning. Wing sent word to Omaha and yesterday he was visited by something more than half of tho entire Chinese quarter of that vlace, all of whom wauted to get him roleased on bail. Saturday 'n&uhl the trouble came w0 & head aud re suited in the name of Major Georgo H. Rick- mond being dropped from the roll of the lodge by a unanimous vote. The aifficulty between Richmond and the post be- gan soon after ho joined fn 188§, when thers was a discussion as ts_the pay- ment of certain dues which Richmona claimed he had already paid but had never been credited with, It was not until after the recent election, however, that there was an open ruptare. It will be remembered that Ricnmond was a candidate for the office of eity surveyor and was snowed under along with almost all his col leagues on the democratic ticket. Ho has blamed the Grana Army boys for his defeat, and, it is alleged, hus made somo very bitter romarks against them, individ- ualiy and as a society. 1t finally became ov- ident that he would not fraternize with the post, and his name was accordingly aropped rom the roll. The Young Men's Christian aswociation celebrated its tenth anniversary last even- ing. Mr. Weidensall has an encrgotic way of speakine that enables him to say a great deal in a very short time, and last night, at the rato of 240 words a minute or thereabouts, he sald as much as many men would have had trouble in saying in forty-eight hours. He oxborted tho people of Council B to maiutain their association at ail haza and_provido the support for it that it de- serves, He painted in graphic language the work done by the association all over the country, and dwelt especially upon that done among railway men und in colleges. Ho urged that steps be_taken at once 10 iuterest the moneyed men of tho city in the project of erecting an association building that should enablo it to do the worl it is intended for to better advantage. “The report of the treasurer was read by L. Peck, zoneral secre- tary of the " Des Moines association, Dr. A, H. Carter, of tne Chris- tian church, was iutroduced ata de- livered the ' address of the evening. Ho stated that 1moral degradation was the result of ignorance of God, and that con- sely moral elovation must result from a knowleage of God. This knowledge may come from a study of his work: “It does not require & scientific knowl- edge,” said the speaker; “‘botter than that is a reverent heart, David did not koow much aswonomy but he could look up with & reverent heart and say, “Ihe heavens declaro the glory of God, uud tho firmament showeth his handiwork.’ As the architect built him a houso of such a pattern that the pillurs would show his name whon viewed from a certain standpoint, so God created tho universe so that one may see his name every- whero if he looks aright. And as we look at the 10,000 stars, at the ocean or at a little flower that we may pick up from beneath our feot, what must we think of the God that created these things? *‘We may also obtain knowledge of God through the study of His book. As we go from Eden to the isle of Patmos let us listen for tho footfalls of God. Let us walk with Enoch. Let us recline with Jacob at the foot of the ladder upon which the angels ascended and descended. Let us view the burning bush with Moses. Let us follow John the Bapiist iato the wilderness, let us follow the heroes of this book until wo rest amla the splendors of Potmas und in all let us study Gog, for it is God that inspires and dircets.” The program was varied with music by Colonel L. W, Tulley’s orchestra, consistiniz ot the Misses Ella Luring and Claire Cham- berlain and Mes Goft, Retallick, L. W. Tulleys, Cnarles Tulleys and W. L. Murphy.
