Miko Engle, who has boen empioyed for short time past at the Metropolitan hotel, was tho first ono caught, He was seen walk ing down street with a valise in his hand, and as he bad been spotted tho day before he was foilowed by Oficor Beswick and placed under arr just after he had reached his room. The valise he carried with him was opened and insido 1t were foundsomething over 800 cigars of the samo brands sold by Shetlock, some of which are notysold by any other dealer in tho city. When coufronted with the crime Enclo made a clean breast of the affair aud said he knew when hie was committing the burglary that tie would bo caught. George Smith, night clerk at the Pacific house, was the next arrest, and ho was vutled out of his bed in the hotel shortly after ho bad got inside, A valise which wa found in his room was nlso taken chargo of by Oficers Beswick and Murphy, and whel it was opened at tho police station it too was found to contaiv over 1,000 vigars of the same brande as those in tho possession of Kugle, Smith insisted that tho valiso was not his, but belonged to another man. Smith, a porter at the Grand botel, was ar- restea as he was coming to work, and locked up on suspicion of being implicated in the burglgry. He stoutly protested that he was 1nocent, and about the only evidenco that the police have against him is that ho was on tho streets late last night 1 the vicinity of the place where the burglary took place. His previous record is somewhat aganst him, as he comploted & Lwo vears’ term in tho peni- tentiary for highway robbery about six wecks ago, since when he has been at the Grand. Cricago, TiL, Avril 6.—Iv has just leaked out here that a combination has been formod, or is beiag formod, between the Vanderbilt and Pennsylvania lines in the east, and tho Chicago, Burilngton & Quiney, the Chicago, Milwaukeo & St. Faul, the Chicago & North- western and ths Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fo 1n the west, by which these companios agree to discontinue the puyment of commis- sions to each other’s agents. The considera tion is adivision of interchanga passenger business 1n accordance with an agreement entered into a few weexs ago and which means the exclusion, so far as possible, of all other lLones from participation in this busi- ness. Two secrev meetings have been held, one in Pittsburg and 1t is believed the other in New York. The roads thatare to be prac- tically boycotted by this agreement are the Rock Island, the Chicago, St. Paul & Kansas City and the Chicago & Alton in the west, and the Grand Trunk, the Erie, the Balti- more & Ohto and convecting lines in the east. It is plain to be scon that this is another at- tempt on the part of the Pennsylvania and Vanderbilt systems to do away with passen- ger commissions to ticket agents, and they have sccured the ussistance of four of the strongost roads west of Chicago. If by this deal they can force tho other lines to surren- der, n poaceful solution of the commission question way Lo expected, but nobody ssems to anticipate such an outcome, at least not until there has becn a fizht. It has been handled carefully and not until today conld veliable information be obtained, the discov- ery ot which is certainly going to be a row, and a terrific rate war, or the abandonment of the scheme. What will become of the Western Traffic association is the absorbing question. Now that the attempt, to hola a meeting has been abandoned and a call issued for a spectal meeting in Now York May 1, it 1s expressed oven more freely now than before that the as- sociation has made its last gape. To Jay Gould is attributed the failure of securing a quorum. Important Subject to Be Settled. Cuicaco, TIL, April 6.—S ern roads are already heartily sick of the at- titude that has bocn taken in regard to switching charges and divisions with wost- ernroads. The refusal of the Grand Trunk to re-ostablish switching carges in the city limits and its arrangement with tho Chicago & Northwestern and the Chicago, Milwau- kee & St. Paul whereby it allows thoso lines divisions of throngh rates instead of paying them switching charges on freight shipped to and from points on their lmes in the city limits, hus had a very noticeable effect.
