NEBRASKA'S PUBLIC LANDS Number of Vacant Acres in the Various Counties of the State. WHAT IRRIGATION WILL ACCOMPLISH Many Farmers Expected to 1o cated in the Near Future Whero No Crops Can Be Raised At Present, Lo+ Wasnizaroy, D, C,, 0 Tie Bee]—Of tho 47,408,500 acres of public lands in Nobraska only 212,263 acres remained unsurveyed at the end of the last your. It must and will not bo supposed, however, that this nmmense torritory still belongs to tho public governmont. The truth is that most of it has passed to private or corporation ownership, but as Nebraska is one of the public land states all of it is termed by the departmont, “public land.” ludeed, the total area of vacant public land in the state 18 only 11,480,430 acros. Further along a closer analysis will be mado of those unappropriated public lands, as it is a matter of gonoral interest. [t 1s proposed by Tue Brr correspondent to g1ve some important facts and figures con- nected with the public lunds in Nebraska, the wformation having the official stamp of the goneral land office, Although the most desir- uble agricultural lands have long since beon taken from the government under the various land laws thoro is still rapid absorption by individual parties of that which 1s less de- siraole aud remaining undor the control of the departmend This can be seen from the statoment that last yoar tho quantity of pub- lic lunds 1 the stato disposed of was 038,504 acres. The bannor year of tho past decado was 1885, when tho government partod with 3,608,351 acres, The last vear shows a less quantity disposed of than has been registered for ten years, so it can bo understood that government proprietorship of lands in No- braska, outside of the military and Indian reservations, will soon be but hitule wmore than o memory. Dispositic It is worth whilo to inquire into the dis- position of this immense amount of publio lands, particulatly as it bears dircetly on tho development and prosperity of the state. From the following statoment the facts can be gathered. 'he number of the homestead March 31, [Special of the Las originai entries under law during tho yoar wero 1,969, in this way 255,480 acres baving been taken up, from which tno government received as commissions 7 aud for fees #8440, or a total of Ifinal entries under the home- stead laws wero made in 3 cases of 611,116 _acros, tho government fees being $14,040.50, Under the timber culturo laws there wero 1,260 original entries, the quan- tity baviog been 193,180 ucres, upon which the fees amounted to $17,220, The final tim- ber culture entries numbored 872, of 120,743 acres, with tees of §3,436. « As to the railvonds they mado 2,200 selec- tions, amounting to 861,621 acres, and paid in feos $4,619.60. There was but oro selection by the state of 160 acres. In all thero were 10,205 miscellancous entrios of 544,501 acres, and the government received therefrom $71,600.87. Thero were 645 sales of lands subject to pre-empuion eutry, nvolving the transfer of 03,207 acres,” und the amount paid $120,321 Homestead entries commuted to casi 318, acres 47,019, amount §60,420.35; timber culturo entries cominuted to casn 110, acres 17,219, amount &1, total cash snle entrios (1,451) acres 03,012, amonnd 203, Agzgregato of all classes of entries. 1 arca or lnnds disposed of, receipts from all source: Exp Expenses incidental to public lands: salaries of registers and receivers, $5,443.10; incl- dental expenses $L,G65,3303 total exponses §2,62.71. There were patentod during the year for the benelit of ruilroads, the Union Pacitic beiug tho beneficiar, 5 acres. The four wilitary reservations in tho state occupy 61,404 acres, divided as follows: Fort McPherson, jonal ccmetery, 107 acres; Camp Kobinson, post reserve, 12,800 acres, timber resorve, 10,240 acres: IForg Sianey, post reserve, (40 acres, limber ro- serve, 5,19 acros; Iort Niobrara, post re- serve, G,194 acres, timber reserve, 25,817 acres. The threo relinquished tions are of the following area: KFort Hart- suff, 3,251 acres: Iort McPherson, 19,500 acrés: Camp Shoridan, 18,225 acres, ' In the past the department hns 'had numerous in- quiries as 10 the location of the vacant pub- li lands in Nebraska. To y ly furnish this information the land officials have pre- pared, after much laoor and expense, a stute- ment giving the facts by counties. Comunis- sioner Carter says it must be boruc i mind that qwite o considerable portion of the va- cant land is embraced in tho mountainous and arid rogious, aud thav tho portion of land cultivablo ‘without irrigation is com: paratively small. What Irrigation Witl Do, It is a reasonable conclusion, however, he says, that vast bodies of arid lands will 10 tume be recluimod oy irrigation as the ro- sult of the efforts of the government to con- struct storage basins und ditches for the purpose, seconded, as they undoubiedly will e, by private enterprise,” and that as a con- sequence tho rain areas of the west will be considerably enlarged. The following state. ment gives the quantity of vacant publio land in each county of Nobruska : Box Butte, 111,310 acres; Cnoyenne, 6:30,- 1045 Douel Scow's Biufl, 181,317 Sberidan, 7 Sioux, Y63,997; Arthur, Biaine, 206,072; ' Brown, 421,055} , 2,077,180; Custer, 156,1%0; Grant, Hooker, 390,800 Logan, 170,900; M- ) 42,0605 Thomas, ~375,900; Diwes, oley, 14,000; Hall, 27, Howara, 80; Valley, 1,078 Chase, Duudy, 110, 060; Frontier, 2,650; Hayes, 25,5803 Hitohe cock, 6,000; Hoone, 14,600; Garfield, Holt, 123,520 Loub, 195,400; Itock, Wheeler, 117,460; Dawsou, Keith, 174,1405 Lincoln, Perkins 7,240 Boyd, land, #0,000;" unsurveyed, 300,000, ICuox, unsurveyed. 180,0007 Banuer, 75,0803 Koya Paba, 50,000, It will be understeod, of course, where no distinction is made all 'are surveyed lands This table, Commissioner Cartor says, js nos only instriictive, but subserves a useful pur- pose in letting those in search of such infor- ;nutlgu where vacant public lands can be ound.
