C. Empkie, 618 South Sixth street. Murs, Empiie was alone in the houso at the time, and the front door had veon loft unlocked. She heard a nofso upstairs, but thought nothing of it at the time. Later sho proceeded to investizato, and when she got in sight of the door of one of the rooms upstairs she saw a man in tho act of ransacking a bureau drawer. The man saw h about the same time, and started to run down stairs, She intercepted him, however, and catening him by tho cout followed him toswn stairs, crying for help. At the same time anothor burglar ap poared and joied the procession. When the trio got to the front door the man who was beiug steered by Mrs. Ilmpkie succeeded in getting away and struck off down stroot, A man who was standing near by caught the other burglar, who shouted: “I'm all right: thero goo down the street. Go for him, [ accordingly let go, and the burglar who liad been blessod with tho necossary nervo 10 play this trick, 10st no time in making his escape. He has niot been heard from since. In the meantime I, H. Evans and anothoer gentleman, who had been attracted to the sceno by Mrs. Empkic's cries, had centéd the first burglar, and he was b over to tho police soon after. He gave his name at the police station as M. Rock, and appeatances indicate that he is a crool of no smull caliber. So far as known nothing was stolen from the house, but had it not been for Mrs, Empkie's pluck both men ‘vould probably have escaped. Mrs. R. B. Cook, wife of Dr. A. J. Cook, has decided to zeta portion of the wealth of C. R. Hannan as the resuit of an attachment suit which was commenced in the district court a few days ago and of which menution was made in tho papers at the time. The sut referred to was begun to collect about £300, clained to be due as reut for the Grand botel annex from Dr. Cook and his wife, and C. R. Hannao, as receiver for the Kimball Champ [uvestmont company, was the plaintiff in tne case. A petition was placed on file in the superior court yesterday in which Mrs. Cook nlleges that the attach- ment was sued out wrongfully and malic- iously, when Haunan knew thatshe was not liable ' for the ront, and thavit was doue for the purpose of humiliating her aud dis- tressing her mentally and financially. Mrs, Cook alloges that the writ of attuchment was 1ssucd by the clerk of the court on a fulse statement of facts, and for the pain which she has been caused by the sueing out of the writ and the subsequent legal proceed- 1ngs to which it gave rise she thinks 5,000 would bo a proper compensation. She ac- cordingly demands a judgmant for that sum. Mr. Haunan has retained attorneys who will fight the case. The mother located them in a farm house on the Nobraska side seven wiles from bere. On a rude bed 1n the midst of the greatest squalor lay tho wasted form of her husbaud in the last stages of consumption. The father had been 1l for many days and the child, but 6 years old, had striven to assist bim as mucn us possible, The little follow bad regularly kindled the fire and waited on tis father. G. Muehimann, 3812 Stanton avenue, early Thursday morning, ehloroformed tha family and ransaked the louse. Over £200 worth of valuavles were stolen, The house of Me, Goldsmith, hiving w0 doors south of Mr. Muehlmann, was en tered about the same time and a gold watch valued at §125, a dtamsnd stud valued at §75, and $45 in cash wero tuken. In both instances the thieves made an en- trauce from the rear. The police have no trace of the marauders, The thieves forced the fastenings of the kitchen window with a jimmy and then went through overy room {n the house, ransacked all the closets, trunks and bureaus, d left the place 1n a litter. Mr. Muchlmann's gold watch, valued at €150, and a pocket- book coutaining 11, tho property of Mrs, J. S. Stock of Peoria, a guest of tho nily, were thoonly things missed. Eunis ana Mr. Roinier of Douglas park cailed on Assistant Chiet of Po- lice Hubbard Thursday with a complaint against dogs. Mr. Ennis stated thata dog bad gone mad four duys ago and some twenty dogs in the neighborhood had been bitten by it or by other dogs which had been bitten. Several children had been bitten by them, but tho owners of the dogs, he said, seemed to care more for their animals thau their chil- dren, for they kept them locked up in their houses to keep them from being shot.
