UOmahu, Neb. AOProve n repaving said JOHN V. FARWELL'S VIEWS The Merchant Prince Disousses the Prinoi- ple of Profit-Sharing. THE IDEA NOT ALTOGETHER PRACTICABLE Thinks It Might Work as Applied to Brain Workers, but Donbts 1ts The division of labor asa meansto the best results in almost every kind of busi- noss has been o successfully applied that no large enterprise of any kind can succeed without it. What else can be done to increase the efficiency of labor and capital? Natural adaptation to some spocial work, and continued appli- cntion in that specinl work, makes ex- perts, and experts make success—other things being equal—and capital and la- bor are equally interested in succoss, as without a fair compensation for both long continued prosperity is not possi- ble. In this country fortuncs have been made so rapidly and in many lines of business thut competition has sprung up as tho legitimate counterpart of largo gains, until capital whieh began with large profits, while paying large remu- neration to labor, was obliged to reduce wages to make eoven a fair interest on capital invested, and now a dissatisfied capitalist has, to meet dissatistied labor and solve the problem of fair compensation toeach. Both asa citizen uml as a morchant of nearly fifty years’ exper- ience 1 have had oceasion 1o give a good deal of attention to the labor prcblem, and among other things have studiod the profit sharing principlo as applied to my line of business. Let me begin by saying in a broad sense, laboe does share in the profits of business more largely in America than in any other country in its relative receipts from the results of labor and capital combined—in wages now wvaid, The question is, can an additional motive bo added by capital to wages, which shall inure to the benefit of both, in the form of a share in the profits over and above wago receipts? 1f so, both must accede to it by the ultimate law of human natuve in business, namely, self- interest. In some manufacturing concerns,nota- bly iron mills, where physical more than brain force produces results, I should say that this added motive would serve both capital and labor in comparativ largor outputs and greater harmony, and is therefore practicable. 1n business estublishments for the sale of manufactured goods the same motive conld only operate on a small number of employes, whose intellectual force and practical experience, combined with strict integrity, mako them competent to manuge departments. Capital may well share profits with such men for the use of their experience and intellectual force, but to extend this motive beyond that line, so us to make it effective in better service from all employes, would not, in my opinion, be a workable propo- sition. To do it the capivalist would be obliged to lower the fixed wages some- what, and then give a percentage of profits which both capital and labor would consider more vhan a compens: tion for the reduction in wages, with the understanding that a sharer in profits of labor will accelerate labor to increase his share in profit: In the case of a large percentage of labor this might be true, but with a larger percentage the large dollar for nnmudmte use 18 more attractive than the hopeful profits added to smaller wages, and they would therefore reject the proposition. It is quite fashionable now for large concerns to incorporate and give all em- ployes of good standing and experienco the option to take shares in them, and this is undoubtedly the true plan for both in profit sharing; for while the labor capital is small at lirst it is i dex of busine habits and chal and insures successful results. an edge to both physical labor and in- tellectual toil to know that one has a moneyed interest, however small, as woll as u wage interest, in the business in hand, and real merit never fails to in- crease its cash investment with an ag- grossive application of labor dynamics, But carried toits legitimate conclu- sions, profit sharing universally applied in industrial and mercantile pursuits means a community of interests and re- solves itself into sociaiism pure and sim- ple. The history of the world reveals the fact that banrbarism prevaiis when such a system is maintained, and that civilization and refinement follow indi- vidual, independent action in the ac- cumulation of wealth. This being so, the mental and moral constitution of the race must be radical- ly changed before the principle of profit sharing can be practically util- ized to better the conditions of society. The millennium must come, not in theory, but inpractical power, as a fact, in which every man can divide brain, muscle and meuns with every other man and be proud of the privilege of doing it, and then the King of Righteousness can again give himsell to the race for its complete redemption from the power of human seifishness. Omahn Ministors Discuss M g in The 1 Work, The regular monthly meeting of the Omaha Ministerial association was largely attendod yestorday morning. Rev. Watterman of Kalamazoo, Colonel Hogeland, the nows- boy’s friona and Secretary Ober of the Young Men's Christian association wore among the half dozen visitors in attendance. Tho paper for the occasion was presented by Rev. A. R. Thain, D.D,, of the Plymouth Congregational church and was upon *“The Kvangelization of tho Cities.” Dr. recommeuded that the example of Christ ba taken as a guide 1n all gospol work. He held also that the pulpit atone ocould never evangelizo the world or tho groat vities. The laity must becomo interested and zealous in the work of saving souls or the ministry could not succeed. He believed in the work of women, too, in the evangelical field. Christian women could and had ac- complished a great deal for the regereration of the human race. He thought their work should be encouraged. Young people should also be enlisted in the army of the Lord. Ho was glad to note the fact that the day had come whon youug people were not held back and sneered at on account of their particiva- tion in religious sorvices. He liked to seethe young Davids of the Christian church step boldly out and show that they were on the Lord’s side against every form of evil. The way to become fishers of men, the aoc- tor held, was sunply to fish for thom. Tho way to evangelizo u city was to go about it. The hght o) truth should bo carried to the poor. The poverty stricken should be re- lieved and tho distressed should be com- forted in a substantial and practical manner whilo the seeds of gospel truth were being sown. Too many church members were idle and indifferent. They secmed to belong to the “church of the hoiy icehouse” ard their church was like a receiving vault, a good place to preserve corpses, buta very poor place for hive Christians, Dr. Thain recommended the co-oporation of the churches in union services at ioter- vals of a few mionths or years at least. By uuited offort the churen peopls would exper- ience the electric offect of larger congrega- tions. Wonderful things bad been accom- plished by simply getting togcther a large crowd. Large crowds hal frequently so in- spired common men that they vecame very oloquent. Tne store of magnetism was ai- ways wonderfully increased by the presenco of a vast concourss of peopls and everybody caught the fira of enthusiasm. Men' had frequently taken thew first import- ant step toward a better life whilo under the pressurc of & great onthusiasm inspired by a large audience. In union services, tuo, a great deal of denomin- ational prejudice died out. Italways did Presbyteriun good to hear a methodist in a union meeting weaven lot of Calvanistic doctrino into a public prayer, and it made Methodists shout for joy to hear Presbyter- ians sing with genwme carnestness some of Waesley’s hymn’s in which the fundamental doctrines of Calvanisin wore shattered. He likek the union meetin They help to break down the useless barviers that have been hedging the churches about. Turnming to the subject of evangilizing Omaha Dr. Thain advised the securing of some great ovangelist and then have a united efforv of all the churches to concentrate the thought of the peopie for a fow weeks upon the importanco of - rel Iu closing he said: “‘Omaha needs a great re- ligious awakening more than she needs club houses, extensions of pavement or & business boom of any material sort.
