MINISTER HALL GOES FOR THE POLICE. But 1t Was Evidently a Blaffas N Api the Congre, With the Prayer Service Ofcers and ation When the trouble Hal of Council Bluffs and the Pirst Baptist curch, of which ho s pastor, was settied some three months ago it was supposed to have been settled for good The six or soven members who had been ac cused of fomenting aiscord amouw the mein bors woro allowed to leave the organization in poace, the salury of the pastor was raised €300 per annum as a token of the good will of the survivors, and all appearances indicated that the difficultios had beon overcome. But it was a mistake, Last Sunday night at the conclusion of the church services a special business meeting was called and Mrs. A, B, Crafts, Mra, L B. Crafts, C. J. MeNitt and Frank Compton were unceremoniously excluded from tho church, No prelimmaries had been taken and no charges had been preferred, so that the first intimation that the four unfortu uates had that asything was going to huppen was whou they were informed that it had airoady happened. They had & large num ver of friends and sympathizors in the chureh, Lowever, and a meeting of these was held Piesday evening at the house of one of them tolay plans for a campaign, Some of tho more hot hieaded ones wore in favor of excluding the pastor at once, but coolor heads prevailed and it was dectded to hold n ousi- 1ess meating at the close of the praver meot- ing last evening aud reinstate the four who had been exclyded. Special Supplication Needed, When the prayer meeting opened the room was filled o its_utmost capacity, ueariy 100 being preseat. Nothing unusual took place untila voung man_ named Shillington con cluded an exbortation by announcing that a meeting had been called in respouse toa pati- ton signed by three members, Messrs. 12 Wahlgren, H. Pothvbridgeand J. D. Stev- enson. +No such meeting shail be held in this voom,” said Mr. Hull; “tho rules of the church provide that a special business meet g can only be calied oy the pastor or the advisory committe Anotiier member immediately arose and vead an oxtract from the church rules in sub- stantiation of Shillington’s ciatm that the call was entirely logal. *No meeting of the church shall be held,” reiterated Pastor Hall. *“There are other rooms in the city where you ean hold your meeting, A meeting may possibly be leld, but it will not be a mecting of the church.” ““The meetiug will be held,” said seveval members simultaneously. The prayer meeting then proceeded, but it wns ovident that u good share of its spirituality had vauished up the tlume. At last Itev, Mr. Hall anuounced a hymn. after which he pronounced a benediction. As soon as the “Amen” bad passed his lips the con- gregation began to sit dowr Lot mourge all who love the chureh,” said the pastor, ““to leave the room at once. Lot the mob take charge of this place if it wiil. 1t will be only for a fow minutes, for we shall broak up this meeting 1f there are any polico in Covneil Bluffs, But th rson Wasn't in It Apparently there were not many present who loved the cburch, or if there were they did not choose to heed the pastor's advice. Up in front stood S. K. Henry, oue of Hall's supporters, and he took the frst step in be. half of the ‘pastor by ordering the janitor to put out the lgnts, Henry is one of the trustees, and the janitor hastened to obey his orders. One of the members followed him about relighting the lights as fast as they wereextinguished, the members of the different factions engaging in loud disputes all over the room in the meautime. No blows wero struck, but it was evident that the temper of every one present was nearing the voiling point. ‘At last the hubbub ceased suflicieutly so ihat un organization could be effected, and just about the time Harry Westcott' had taken tho chair Hall ana” Henry left the chureh, anuouncing that ail who did not wish 10 be arrested would better leave the vlace atonce, as the patrol wagon would be on tho ground as soon as it could be summoned. After the pastor and his friends uad left the church things cooled down considerably and the meeting went on in comparative quiot. The first thing was to reoinstate the four members who were excluded Sunday night, and this was doneunanimously. After a long discussion, in which the dificultics between the pastor and the members were aired at length, it was decided to lay the troubles be fore a council consisting of representatives from seven of the ueighboring Baptis churches and abide by the decision of this couucil, A committee was appointed to maico all the nocessary arrangements for tho holding of the council, it being_composed of Mossrs. Evans, Pethybridge, Barrett, Shil- lington and Welis, Somebody Must Give Way, It is evident from the determined stand taken by those who wero dissatisfied with Kev. Mr. hall that one of two things will be done, and that very soon. Kither Mr. Hall must go, or a large portion of the church will e excluded. ‘There were forty-five votes cast in favor of submitting the dificulties to a council, and from the remarks that were freely made on all sides it can be readily soen that no middle course will ve tolerated. It was supposed at the time that the threat of Hall aad his followers to invoke the aid of the police was a bluff game, intended to friehten the opposition into laying down their arms. Later developments, however, showed that the police were really sum: moned, but refused to come to the aid of the pastor, stating that it was none of their busi ness 50 long as nothing was done to disturb tho peaco of the community, — Swanson Muelc Masonic temple ———— Voual Music, Davis, teacher of voice ding.
